Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco: Chefchaouen
Day 1: Lost in the Azure Alleys: My First Day in Chefchaouen
Discover the magic of Chefchaouen: From the blue Medina to the historic Kasbah, experience the heart of Moroccan charm.
A Blue Awakening
After a long journey from Brussels, with a connecting flight in Tangier, I finally arrived in Chefchaouen with my friends. The drive from Tangier was quite scenic, and as we approached Chefchaouen, the anticipation grew. Known as the 'Blue Pearl' of Morocco, I was eager to see if it lived up to its reputation, and let me tell you, it absolutely did! The city unfolded before us like a dream, a mesmerizing cascade of blue hues that seemed to spill down the mountainside. I couldn't wait to dive into this azure wonderland and capture its essence through my lens.
Our first day was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Chefchaouen, and what better place to start than the Chefchaouen Medina? After checking in to Hotel Casa Miguel, which charmed us instantly with its traditional Moroccan decor, we ventured out to explore. The hotel, nestled perfectly within the Medina, provided us with immediate access to the enchanting blue streets.

The Medina was a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, each turn revealing a new and captivating scene. The buildings were painted in various shades of blue, from soft pastels to deep indigos, creating a surreal and calming atmosphere. The effect was quite striking, and it felt as though we had stepped into a living painting. As an antique restorer, I couldn't help but notice the intricate details in the architecture. The doorways, the windows, the small fountains tucked away in corners – each element told a story of the city's rich history and culture.
We wandered aimlessly, letting the Medina guide us. The air was filled with the scent of spices, the sound of Berber music, and the chatter of locals and tourists alike. My friends and I stopped frequently, snapping photos of the picturesque scenes. I was particularly fascinated by the doors of Chefchaouen; each one was unique, adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant colors. I could easily spend days just photographing the doors!
The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the warmth and authenticity of its people and culture.
For breakfast, we decided to try Chez Aziz. The rooftop terrace offered breathtaking views of the city, and the free continental breakfast was a delightful start to our day. The staff was incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. Over tea and pastries, we discussed our plans for the day, eager to explore every nook and cranny of Chefchaouen.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Kasbah. Built in the 15th century, this historic fortress offered a glimpse into Chefchaouen's past. We explored the lush gardens, the old prison cells, and the Ethnographic Museum, which showcased traditional instruments, antique weapons, and photos of Chefchaouen's past. The Kasbah provided a sense of tranquility amidst the bustling Medina. From the top of the Kasbah, the panoramic view of the city was simply breathtaking. I could see the entire Medina spread out before me, a sea of blue against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant Bab Ssour. Located in the Medina, this charming restaurant served traditional Moroccan cuisine in a cozy setting. We sat on comfortable couches, admiring the blue and white windows, while we enjoyed a delicious tagine. The portions were generous, and the flavors were rich and authentic. It felt like we were dining in a Moroccan friend's home.

In the afternoon, we explored more of the Medina, stumbling upon Hibart Souvenirs Shop. This little gem was filled with handmade goods, from traditional textiles to pottery and jewelry. I couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs for Marie and Thomas. I picked up a beautiful handwoven rug with intricate designs and a small, decorative tagine. I am sure they will love these little reminders of my trip.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Restaurant Hamsa for dinner. Located in Place Outa el-Hammam, this restaurant offered a breathtaking view of the city. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu featured a variety of Moroccan dishes. We savored the flavors of harira soup, tagine, and sweet pastries, all while sipping fragrant mint tea. It was the perfect ending to our first day in Chefchaouen.

The weather in Chefchaouen in September is quite pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 68°F to 91°F. Today was no exception; the sun shone brightly, and the sky was a clear blue. It was the perfect weather for exploring the city.
As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Chefchaouen has captured my heart with its beauty, its culture, and its people. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Ras El Ma and Boulevard Mohamed V. I've heard that Ras El Ma offers a refreshing escape from the Medina, and I'm eager to explore the local shops along Boulevard Mohamed V. And perhaps, we'll end the day with a drink at Bar Oum Rabie.
Before I turn in for the night, I'm making a note to buy a hat tomorrow. I realized that I forgot to pack one, and the sun here can be quite intense. I also need to find a portable phone charger; my phone battery is already running low from taking so many photos!
Chefchaouen is more than just a pretty picture; it's a place where time seems to slow down, where the simple things in life are celebrated, and where the beauty of human connection is cherished. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Until then, good night from the Blue Pearl of Morocco!
