Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco: Chefchaouen
Day 3: Lost in the Blue: A Day of Discovery in Chefchaouen's Medina
Wander through Chefchaouen's enchanting blue streets, savoring local flavors and discovering hidden gems in the heart of Morocco.
A Daydream in Blue
Chefchaouen has a way of seeping into your soul, doesn't it? After just a couple of days, I find myself completely captivated by the rhythm of this blue-washed town. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, inviting you to simply wander and absorb the beauty around you. Today was no exception, as my friends and I dove headfirst into the heart of the medina, ready to embrace whatever adventures awaited us.
Our day began, as most good days do, with breakfast. We ventured to Sofia, a local spot I'd heard whispers about, and it didn't disappoint. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea, of course. There's something magical about sipping that sweet, fragrant tea while watching the town slowly come to life. The others went for some local pastries and breads. Fuelled up and ready to explore, we decided to start with a tour of the Blue Medina.

We met our guide, a charismatic local who seemed to know every nook and cranny of the medina. He led us through a labyrinth of narrow streets, each turn revealing a new shade of blue. From the softest pastel to the deepest indigo, it was a feast for the eyes. The guide shared stories of the town's history, explaining the various theories behind the blue hue – from keeping mosquitoes away to representing the sky and heaven. Whatever the reason, it certainly creates a unique and enchanting atmosphere.
It's like stepping into a painting, where every corner is a masterpiece and every doorway a portal to another world.
After our tour, we found ourselves drawn to Plaza Uta el-Hamman, the heart of Chefchaouen. The square was bustling with activity, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists. We took a seat at one of the many cafes, soaking in the atmosphere. Street performers played traditional music, and the air was filled with the aroma of spices and grilling meat. It was the perfect spot to simply sit and people-watch, observing the ebb and flow of daily life in Chefchaouen.

Lunch beckoned, and we chose Restaurant Ali Baba, drawn in by its inviting atmosphere and promises of authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was delightful, and we were greeted warmly. I decided on a vegetarian tagine, packed with fresh vegetables and aromatic spices. The tagine arrived steaming hot, the spices filling the air with an irresistible aroma. It was a true taste of Morocco, and I savored every bite.

With our bellies full, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping. We stumbled upon Blue. concept store, a charming little shop filled with handcrafted jewelry, textiles, and home décor. I found a beautiful handwoven rug that will look perfect in my Antwerp apartment, a little piece of Chefchaouen to bring back home. It was a bit of a splurge, but I couldn't resist. Marie always says I have an eye for these things, and I think she'll love it. The shopkeeper was friendly and helpful, sharing stories about the local artisans who created the pieces. It's these personal connections that make traveling so special, isn't it?

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to simply wander, getting lost in the maze of blue streets. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards, ornate doorways, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Every corner seemed to offer a new photo opportunity, and I snapped away, trying to capture the magic of the moment. I even managed to find a quiet spot to sketch for a while, something I haven't done enough of lately. The tranquility of the town was incredibly inspiring.
For dinner, we opted for Traditional kitchen, a restaurant recommended by our guide. It was a cozy little place, tucked away from the main square. The menu featured traditional Moroccan dishes, and we decided to try a bit of everything. From the tagine to the couscous, each dish was bursting with flavor and authenticity. It was the perfect way to end our day, sharing stories and laughter over a delicious meal.

As I sit here now, writing this in my hotel room, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today was a day of simple pleasures – wandering through beautiful streets, savoring delicious food, and connecting with the local culture. Chefchaouen has a way of stripping away the unnecessary, leaving you with what truly matters. I am also happy that I did not forget my camera, as I had a lot of opportunities to use it today. However, I really missed my hat, as the sun was quite strong in the afternoon.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to venture a bit further afield, heading to the Waterfalls Akchour and Parc National de Talassemtane. I've heard they're absolutely stunning, and I'm eager to explore more of the natural beauty surrounding Chefchaouen. But for now, I'll simply close my eyes and drift off to sleep, dreaming of blue streets and fragrant mint tea. Goodnight from Chefchaouen!
