Embracing Hoi An's Slower Pace

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from slowing down and truly immersing oneself in the local rhythm. Today was one of those days—a gentle exploration of Hoi An's surrounding countryside, a world away from the bustling ancient town. It was a day filled with laughter, quiet reflection, and the kind of simple beauty that stays with you long after you've left.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Firefly Hoi An | Restaurant & Bar. The restaurant was airy and decorated with colorful lanterns. I savored every bite of the local delicacies, fueling up for the day's adventures.

First on the agenda was a visit to Rừng Dừa Bảy Mẫu, the Bay Mau Coconut Forest. I had read about the unique experience of riding in a traditional basket boat, and I was eager to see it for myself. The area is located about 3km from Hoi An's Old Town.

As the small boat glided into the narrow waterways, I was immediately enveloped by the tranquility of the forest. The coconut palms towered overhead, creating a cool, green canopy. The boatman, with a wide, welcoming smile, expertly navigated the waterways, sharing stories of the forest's history and its significance to the local community.

It was fascinating to learn that this serene forest had once served as a hiding place for Viet Cong guerillas during the war. Now, it's a haven for tourists seeking a peaceful escape and a glimpse into local life. The boatman showed off his skills, spinning the basket boat with impressive speed and precision. I even got a chance to try it myself, resulting in laughter as I struggled to keep the boat on course.

Sometimes, the best stories are not found in history books, but in the shared laughter and simple moments of human connection.

After the enchanting boat ride, it was time for lunch. I headed to Hong Phuc 2, a local restaurant known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. I enjoyed a delicious meal of fresh seafood and flavorful local dishes, soaking in the lively atmosphere of the restaurant.

With my belly full and my spirit refreshed, I embarked on the next adventure: cycling through the Hoi An rice fields. I rented a bicycle and set off on a leisurely ride, leaving the town behind and immersing myself in the serene countryside. The November air was balmy, with a gentle breeze that rustled through the rice stalks.

As I pedaled along the narrow paths, I was surrounded by a sea of green. Farmers tended to their crops, water buffalos grazed peacefully, and children flew kites in the distance. It was a scene of idyllic rural life, a snapshot of Vietnam's timeless beauty. I stopped to take photos, capturing the vibrant colors and the serene atmosphere.

I thought about Marie and Thomas back in Antwerp. Marie would have loved the peacefulness of the rice paddies, a stark contrast to her busy days at the library. Thomas, with his boundless energy, would have enjoyed cycling alongside me, perhaps even racing through the fields. I made a mental note to bring them here someday, to share this experience with my family.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, I found myself near a particularly scenic spot. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant hues, painting the rice fields in shades of gold, orange, and pink. It was a breathtaking sight, a moment of pure magic that I knew would stay with me forever.

For dinner, I chose the Old Garden Restaurant (Vườn Xưa), known for its traditional Vietnamese dishes served in a charming garden setting. Surrounded by lush greenery and the soft glow of lanterns, I savored another delicious meal, reflecting on the day's adventures.

The evening wasn't over yet. I decided to check out Market Bar - Market Terrace, a rooftop bar offering stunning views of Hoi An's Old Town. From the terrace, I watched as the town lit up with colorful lanterns, creating a magical spectacle. I enjoyed a refreshing drink, savoring the cool evening air and the vibrant atmosphere. The bar had a great vibe, with funky house music playing.

As I sipped my drink, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Hoi An had once again surprised me with its hidden charms and its ability to offer moments of genuine connection and tranquility. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best travel memories are made not by ticking off famous landmarks, but by embracing the simple pleasures of life and immersing oneself in the local culture.

Tomorrow marks my final day in Hoi An. I plan to visit the Buu Dai Son Pagoda, the Cao Dai Temple of Hoi An and Chùa Pháp Bảo [if last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I also intend to visit the Hoi An Lantern Company to buy some souvenirs [if last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”].

Back at the Hadana Boutique Resort HoiAn (former Belle Maison Hadana HoiAn), I journaled about my day, capturing the memories and emotions that had filled my heart. As I drifted off to sleep, I knew that this day of tranquility would forever be etched in my mind, a reminder of the beauty and simplicity that can be found in the most unexpected places.

The Vietnamese countryside had a liberating effect on me, perhaps I should consider taking Marie and Thomas on a camping trip when I get back. I'm sure they'd both appreciate it.
