Solo Adventure to Hoi An: Exploring Vietnam's Ancient Charm
Day 9: A Day Immersed in Hoi An's History and Charm
Wandering through ancient houses and vibrant markets, I uncover the soul of Hoi An, a town where history whispers on every corner.
Stepping Back in Time in Hoi An
Today was a day of wandering through history, a gentle immersion into the soul of Hoi An. I find myself increasingly drawn to this town, its stories unfolding with each step I take down its ancient streets. It's a place where the past feels incredibly present, a sentiment that resonates deeply with an antique restorer like myself.
My day began, as many do, with the quest for good coffee. I ventured out to Dng.coffee, a local spot that promised a decent brew. The reviews I'd skimmed mentioned a pleasant atmosphere, and I was not disappointed. It was a nice space, and a good cup of coffee is always a great way to start the day. Sipping my coffee, I planned my route for the day, eager to delve into the historical heart of Hoi An. The weather in November is quite pleasant, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 23°C to 28°C (73°F - 82°F), making it ideal for walking around the Ancient Town.

My first stop was the renowned Quan Thang Ancient House. As I approached, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. The house, over 150 years old, stands as a testament to the enduring architecture of the region. Built by a Chinese captain and merchant, Quan Thang, it served as both a trading place and a home. The architecture is heavily influenced by the Huaxia region of China, a fact that caught my interest. The intricate wood carvings, crafted by artisans from Kim Bong Carpentry Village, were particularly impressive. I spent a good hour wandering through the house, admiring the detailed craftsmanship and imagining the lives of those who once called it home. It's fascinating to see how these ancient houses have been preserved, offering a glimpse into the past.

The beauty of Hoi An lies not just in its well-preserved architecture, but in the stories it whispers to those who take the time to listen.
Next on my list was the Old House of Tan Ky. This house, built in 1741, has been home to seven generations of the Le family. What struck me most was the blend of Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese architectural styles. The house has three compartments and two floors, with intricate carvings of various objects like dragon tails and fish heads. It felt like stepping into a living museum, with antiques that held stories from centuries past. One of the most remarkable items was the Confucius cup, believed to be around 550-600 years old. I couldn't help but marvel at the history contained within those walls. The fact that the house survived a major flood in 1964, with the majority of its original architecture intact, is a testament to its solid structure and the care of its owners.

After immersing myself in history, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at AVANA VietNam Designer Boutique. As an antique restorer, I appreciate craftsmanship and unique design, and AVANA certainly delivered. The boutique offers handcrafted clothing with a focus on tribal black and white motifs. The designs are unique, blending high-end fashion with cultural roots. I found a beautiful piece that I couldn't resist, a reminder of my time in Hoi An.

Lunch beckoned, and I made my way to Song thanh Riverside Restaurant. Situated along the Thu Bon River, the restaurant offered a delightful atmosphere with friendly staff and a relaxed vibe. I enjoyed a delicious meal of Cao Lau with pork, a local specialty, while watching the boats glide by on the river. The prices were reasonable, and the food was fresh and flavorful. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing my exploration.

In the late afternoon, I returned to The Timeless Hoi An, wandering through the streets and soaking in the atmosphere. The town was bustling with activity, but there was still a sense of tranquility amidst the chaos. I found myself drawn to the small alleyways, where I discovered hidden gems and quiet corners. The yellow walls of the ancient town seemed to glow in the soft light, creating a magical ambiance. It's easy to see why Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage site; it's a place that truly captures the essence of Vietnamese culture and history.

As evening approached, I made my way to Tin Tin Restaurant-Bar for dinner. This spot is known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. I ordered shrimp spring rolls and a local noodle specialty, both of which were delicious. The staff were friendly and spoke English well, making it easy to communicate. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, with light music playing in the background. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Rừng Dừa Bảy Mẫu Hội An - Làng Quê (Bay Mau Coconut Forest) and experience the unique Tour Rừng Dừa Thuyền Thúng (Basket Boat Tour). I'm looking forward to venturing beyond the ancient town and discovering more of what Hoi An has to offer. I might even try cycling through the Hoi An Rice Fields-Cycling&Sunset, if the weather permits.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am reminded of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about connecting with the past, immersing myself in different cultures, and discovering the stories that make each destination unique. Hoi An has certainly captured my heart, and I look forward to continuing my journey of exploration.
The Lantern Festival is a magical event held every full moon in the ancient town of Hoi An in Vietnam. On the night of the full moon, thousands of colorful lanterns are lit, both on the streets and in the water, creating an ethereal atmosphere. As part of the festival, locals and visitors alike don traditional Vietnamese dress and parade through the streets carrying lanterns. The streets are lined with traditional performances, singing, and dancing, and the night culminates in a stunning fireworks display. It would be great to experience it. Perhaps Marie and Thomas would enjoy this.
Before heading back to the hotel, I took a stroll along the Thu Bon River. The sight of the lanterns reflecting on the water was magical. The air was filled with the sounds of music and laughter, and the atmosphere was electric. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
