Solo Adventure to Hoi An: Exploring Vietnam's Ancient Charm
Day 7: Crafting Connections: Discovering Hoi An's Soul Through its Villages
Delve into the heart of Vietnam with a Hoi An village tour, unveiling ancient crafts and authentic flavors. A Sunday of cultural immersion!
A Day Among Artisans
Today was a day of venturing beyond the well-trodden paths of Hoi An's ancient town, seeking a deeper connection with the soul of this place. I wanted to witness the artistry that has been passed down through generations, to feel the pulse of the communities that keep these traditions alive. It was a Sunday dedicated to exploring the villages surrounding Hoi An, and it turned out to be a truly immersive experience.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Nhan's Kitchen. The reviews I'd read online were spot on: it's a gem. I opted for the eggplant with lemongrass and tofu, a recommendation I'd seen repeatedly. It was indeed an explosion of flavors, a perfect start to a day of exploration. Fuelled and ready, I set off to discover the craftsmanship that defines this region.

First on my list was the Hoi An Village Experience. It wasn’t a specific location, but rather a concept—an invitation to witness the traditional life that thrives just outside the bustling town center. I found myself drawn to the quieter corners, observing the rhythm of daily life, the smiles of the locals, and the unhurried pace that seems to resist the encroachment of modern life. It was in these moments that I felt a genuine connection to the heart of Vietnam.

Next, I headed towards the Hoi An Handicraft Village - Xóm Thủ Công Hội An. This wasn't just a place to buy souvenirs; it was a living exhibition of skill and dedication. I watched artisans meticulously crafting intricate lanterns, weaving colorful textiles, and shaping delicate ceramics. The air was filled with the sounds of creation – the gentle tap of a hammer, the rhythmic whir of a spinning wheel, the soft murmur of conversations passed down through generations. I even tried my hand at a bit of pottery, and let's just say, I'll stick to admiring the professionals for now!

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners where traditions whisper their stories.
The highlight of my day was undoubtedly Làng mộc Kim Bồng, the Kim Bong Carpentry Village. As an antique restorer, I have a deep appreciation for woodworking, and this village was a revelation. For over 500 years, the artisans of Kim Bong have been shaping wood into everything from intricate furniture to the sturdy boats that ply the local waters. I was mesmerized watching them work, their hands moving with a skill that seemed almost innate.

I learned that the village's craftsmen contributed to the architecture of Hoi An and even the Hue Citadel. The skill is divided into three categories: wood architecture, shipbuilding, and carpentry. I even got a chance to try my hand at carving, creating a stylized wooden turtle under the watchful eye of a master craftsman named Tuan. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, and I now have a unique memento of my time in Hoi An.
Before heading back to the Hadana Boutique Resort HoiAn (former Belle Maison Hadana HoiAn), I decided to indulge in some local shopping. It being Sunday, I thought it would be a good opportunity to explore the local markets. Though I didn't visit a specific market called 'Sunday in Hoi An', I did find a vibrant atmosphere, filled with locals and tourists alike. I picked up a few handcrafted items, supporting the local economy and taking home a piece of Hoi An's artistic spirit. I found a shop that works with master artisans from different handicraft villages to create beautiful handmade products from natural materials.

For lunch, I ventured to the Old Garden Restaurant (Vườn Xưa). Tucked away in the Old Town, this family-run eatery offered a charming respite from the day's adventures. I savored local specialties like shrimp wonton soup and Hoi An noodles with shrimp, each bite bursting with authentic flavors. It was the perfect place to recharge before continuing my exploration.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to CHÂU Kitchen & Bar - Dining restaurant in Hoi An. This dining restaurant in Hoi An is known for its fusion menu, blending local ingredients with international techniques. I opted for the Iron Beefsteak, a dish praised by international media as a symbol of the ancient town's cuisine. The ambiance was perfect – a blend of modern design and ancient features, creating a cozy yet luxurious atmosphere.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Hoi An is more than just its picturesque streets and tailor shops. It's a place where tradition thrives, where artistry is a way of life, and where the warmth of the people shines through in every interaction. It’s a place where you can slow down, breathe deep, and connect with something real.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the coastal side of Hoi An, visiting Cua Dai Beach and Tan Thanh Beach, and maybe even finding that Hidden Hammock Spot [Cua Dai Beach, Tan Thanh Beach, Hidden Hammock Spot]. But for now, I'm content with the memories of today, the faces of the artisans, the taste of the local cuisine, and the feeling of having truly connected with the soul of Hoi An.
I am also regretting not bringing my Vietnamese phrasebook, and a portable phone charger. I will make sure to buy those tomorrow.
I'm looking forward to a good night's rest before I venture out to the beaches tomorrow. I'm hoping to catch a sunrise and enjoy the coastal breeze. Perhaps I'll even find a quiet spot to read and reflect on my journey so far. I'm particularly excited about visiting the Bungalow Beach Bar in the evening [Bungalow Beach Bar]. It sounds like the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the sunset with a refreshing drink.
I'm so grateful for these experiences and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
