Echoes of the Past in Hoi An
Today, I decided to fully immerse myself in the history and culture of Hoi An. I wanted to understand the layers of time that have shaped this charming town, and what better way to do that than by visiting its museums and engaging with local artisans? It was a day of discovery, reflection, and appreciation for the heritage that Hoi An so beautifully preserves.

My morning started with a hearty breakfast at Nhà hàng Cơm Linh. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, a flavorful bowl of Pho. The herbs were so fresh, and the broth was rich and comforting – a perfect start to a day of exploration. It's fascinating how a simple bowl of noodles can tell you so much about a place.

Fueled and ready, my first stop was the Hoi An Museum. Housed in a traditional Chinese assembly hall, the museum offered a glimpse into the town's history as a bustling trading port. The exhibits showcased artifacts from various periods, from the Sa Huynh culture to the Cham kingdom and the more recent French colonial era. While the museum itself was quite small, it was still packed with interesting artifacts, including ceramics, photographs, and historical documents. It gave me a good overview of Hoi An's evolution over the centuries.

Wandering through the exhibits, I learned about the influences of Chinese, Japanese, and European traders who once flocked to this port. It's amazing to think that this small town was once a melting pot of cultures, a place where merchants from all corners of the world came to exchange goods and ideas. I was particularly drawn to the displays about the local artisans and their crafts, which have been passed down through generations. I felt a connection to my own work as an antique restorer, preserving history in my own way.

Next on my list was the Museum of Folk Culture. This museum was a treasure trove of information about the daily life and traditions of the people of Hoi An and the surrounding region. Housed in what was once the largest wooden two-story house in the Ancient Town, the building itself was a sight to behold.

The essence of a place lies not just in its grand monuments, but also in the everyday lives and traditions of its people.

Inside, I found exhibits on traditional crafts like lantern making, silk weaving, and pottery. There were also displays about traditional costumes, wedding customs, and folk games. It was fascinating to see how these traditions have been preserved over time, despite the influences of modernization. I was particularly intrigued by the exhibit on Bai Choi, a traditional folk game that combines music, poetry, and lively expression. I made a mental note to try and catch a performance of Bai Choi during my stay.

After immersing myself in folk culture, I ventured to the Museum of Sa Huynh Culture. This museum focused on the Sa Huynh people, an ancient civilization that inhabited this region of Vietnam thousands of years ago. The museum housed a collection of artifacts from Sa Huynh burial sites, including pottery, jewelry, and tools.

The Sa Huynh culture existed 2000 years ago, and it was fascinating to see the artifacts they left behind. I was most impressed by the burial jars on display. The Sa Huynh people were skilled in ceramics and metals, and they created weapons, household products, and jewelry. The museum gave me a glimpse into what it was like to live thousands of years ago. It's humbling to realize how much history has unfolded in this small corner of the world, long before Hoi An became a bustling trading port.

For lunch, I treated myself to a meal at Orivy Hoi An Local Food Restaurant. I savored Cao Lau, a local noodle dish with a unique flavor. The noodles were perfectly chewy, and the pork was tender and flavorful.

In the afternoon, I decided to explore the artisan side of Hoi An a bit more and visited Reaching Out Arts & Crafts. This shop is more than just a place to buy souvenirs; it's a social enterprise that provides employment and training for people with disabilities. I was impressed by the quality of the crafts on display, from ceramics to jewelry to textiles. Everything was handmade with care and attention to detail.

I purchased a small ceramic bowl as a memento of my visit, knowing that my purchase would support a worthy cause. The staff were incredibly friendly, and I enjoyed learning about the organization's mission. It's inspiring to see how they are empowering people with disabilities and preserving traditional crafts at the same time. I even considered taking one of their lantern-making workshops, but decided to save that for another day.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Red Gecko Restaurant for dinner. I opted for the BBQ fish in banana leaf, a local specialty. The fish was cooked to perfection, and the banana leaf imparted a subtle, smoky flavor. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion.

Reflecting on my day, I realized how much Hoi An has to offer beyond its picturesque streets and colorful lanterns. The town's museums provide a window into its rich history, while its artisans preserve its cultural heritage. By engaging with these aspects of Hoi An, I gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for this unique destination. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore the Hoi An Ecotour and Cam Thanh Rice Fields, and learn how to make my own lantern.

Perhaps I'll even stop by Soul Kitchen for a drink in the evening. It's important to remember that travel isn't just about seeing new places; it's about connecting with the people and cultures that make those places unique. Hoi An has certainly captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
