Solo Adventure in Yakushima: Exploring Japan's Natural Wonder
Day 15: Farewell to Yakushima: A Journey's End and Reflections on Nature's Majesty
Reflecting on my solo adventure in Yakushima, from ancient forests to stunning sunsets, a journey of nature and self-discovery.
Adieu, Yakushima!
As my final day on this enchanting island draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. This solo journey to Yakushima has been nothing short of transformative, a deep dive into nature's grandeur and a chance for personal reflection. It’s hard to believe my fifteen days here have already passed. From the moment I stepped off the ferry, I was captivated by the island's ancient forests, the symphony of its wildlife, and the serene beauty of its rugged coastline. It feels like just yesterday I was planning this trip over a glass of Belgian ale in Antwerp, dreaming of escaping the city's hustle for the tranquility of Yakushima. Now, as I prepare to leave, I want to share the final moments of my adventure and some lasting impressions of this remarkable place.
My last day began with a simple breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. I wasn't expecting much from an airport eatery, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a no-frills affair, but the coffee was strong and the pastries were fresh—just what I needed to start the day. I savored every bite, knowing it would be my last taste of Yakushima for now. As I ate, I watched the small planes take off, each one carrying passengers away from this island paradise. I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness, but also gratitude for the incredible experiences I've had here.

After breakfast, I decided to revisit some of my favorite spots on the island. I drove along the coastal roads, marveling at the crystal-clear waters and the lush greenery that seemed to spill down from the mountains. I made a quick stop at a local shop to pick up some souvenirs for Marie and Thomas. I found a beautiful piece of Yakushima cedar wood, which I thought would make a perfect addition to our living room back in Antwerp, a small piece of this magical island to remind us of my adventure.
My main destination for the day was, of course, Yakushima Island itself. It felt fitting to dedicate my last day to simply soaking in the island's atmosphere, revisiting the places that had left the biggest impression on me. I took a leisurely drive through the Seibu Rindo Forest Path, the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Coastal Road, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Yakushima deer and macaques that roam freely here. And I wasn't disappointed. As I rounded a bend, I spotted a group of macaques lounging by the roadside, seemingly unfazed by my presence. I watched them for a while, fascinated by their playful antics and their unique adaptations to this island environment.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are not about conquering mountains, but about discovering the peace within ourselves amidst the beauty of nature.
For lunch, I had made a reservation at Kotobuki, a restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine and its secluded, almost mystical setting. Finding it was a bit of an adventure in itself, tucked away off the main road, but the effort was well worth it. The restaurant is set on a hillside, and you approach it via a 'castle-like' walkway, which immediately transports you to another time. The interior is cozy and inviting, with traditional Japanese décor that exudes a sense of calm and tranquility. I had booked a few days in advance, as is required, and was treated to a set menu that showcased the freshest local ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The meal was a true culinary experience, a perfect blend of tradition and innovation. As I savored each bite, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a unique and authentic dining experience. The elderly couple who run the place were incredibly kind, making me feel like a welcome guest in their home.

After lunch, I decided to visit the Sunset Hill Observation Deck, a spot I had heard offered breathtaking views of the East China Sea. As the name suggests, it's the perfect place to watch the sunset, and I was hoping to catch one last glimpse of Yakushima's famed sunsets before I left. When I arrived, the sky was already beginning to blaze with color, a fiery mix of orange, pink, and purple. I found a quiet spot and sat down, simply taking in the view. The sun slowly sank below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the sea and the surrounding landscape. It was a truly magical moment, a perfect ending to my day and my trip.

Before heading to the airport, I made one last stop at The North Face store. I know it might seem odd to visit an outdoor apparel shop on my last day, but I wanted to pick up a small memento of my time here. Plus, I had forgotten to pack sunscreen, a rookie mistake for someone who spends so much time outdoors! I ended up buying a Yakushima-exclusive T-shirt, a simple design featuring the island's iconic cedar trees. It's a practical souvenir, something I can wear on my cycling trips through the Antwerp port when I'm back home.

For my final dinner on the island, I chose Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter. It was a fitting choice, given the unique and unforgettable experiences I've had here. The restaurant is known for its carefully prepared meals and the serene atmosphere. The path leading to the restaurant was beautiful, making the experience even more special. The meal was prepared with great care, and the time passed at a leisurely pace. It was a perfect way to reflect on my journey and savor the last moments of my Yakushima adventure.

As I sit here in the Yakushima Airport, waiting for my flight back to Tokyo, I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. This solo trip was a challenge, a step outside my comfort zone, but it was also incredibly rewarding. I've discovered a new appreciation for nature, a deeper understanding of myself, and a renewed sense of adventure. Yakushima has a way of getting under your skin, of capturing your heart with its raw beauty and its tranquil atmosphere. It's a place where you can truly disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself.
I know that I'll carry the memories of this trip with me for the rest of my life. The ancient cedar forests, the playful macaques, the stunning sunsets—these are images that will forever be etched in my mind. And while I'm looking forward to returning home to Marie and Thomas, to sharing my stories and my photographs, I know that a part of me will always remain here, on this magical island in the East China Sea.
Tomorrow, I begin my journey back to Antwerp, back to my quiet life as an antique restorer. But I know that I'll never be quite the same after this trip. Yakushima has changed me, has opened my eyes to the beauty and the power of nature. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
Until next time, Yakushima. Sayōnara.
