Whispers of Water and Woods

Today was a day of deep immersion into the heart of Yakushima's natural wonders. It was a journey that took me from the thunderous applause of a majestic waterfall to the hushed reverence of an ancient, moss-draped forest. These are the moments I live for, the ones that remind me of the profound beauty our world holds and the importance of preserving it.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. I fueled up with some local delicacies, eager to embrace the adventures that lay ahead. I was looking forward to tasting some authentic island flavors before venturing into the wilderness. It's always a pleasure to support local businesses and sample the unique ingredients that Yakushima has to offer. It's a small market, but it has a lot of local food to offer.

First on the agenda was the magnificent Ohko Waterfall. As I approached, the sound of the cascading water grew louder, a symphony of nature beckoning me closer. The bus ride from Miyanoura Port took about 90 minutes. It was a scenic route, offering glimpses of the island's diverse landscapes. Situated between Kurio and Nagata, on the southwest coast, the falls are easily accessible by bus.

Finally, I arrived at the Ohko Waterfall, which plunges 88 meters down into an emerald-green pool. The sheer power and beauty of the falls left me breathless. The water cascaded down in two streams, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. I took my time to soak in the awe-inspiring sight, feeling the cool mist on my face and listening to the thunderous roar of the water. It's no wonder this is considered one of Japan's best waterfalls. The falls were selected as one of Japan's 100 best waterfalls in 1996.

I was able to get pretty close to the falls, but the rocks near the water's edge were slippery. I had to tread carefully, but it was worth it to feel the full force of nature's power. Swimming in the pool is prohibited, but I was content with just admiring the falls from a safe distance.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After spending a good amount of time at the waterfall, I decided to grab a quick lunch at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It was convenient and offered a decent variety of options to refuel before my next adventure. I had a simple yet satisfying meal, preparing myself for the tranquility of the Kokemusu Forest. This was a welcome break, and the food was surprisingly good for an airport eatery.

With renewed energy, I set off to explore the enchanting Kokemusu Forest. Also known as the Moss Forest, it is located within Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine. This forest is said to have served as the key site of influence for Studio Ghibli's *Princess Mononoke*. As I stepped into the forest, I felt like I was entering another world. The air was thick with moisture, and every surface was covered in a vibrant carpet of moss.

The Kokemusu Forest was truly magical. The ancient cedar trees stood tall and proud, their gnarled branches reaching towards the sky. The forest floor was a tapestry of green, with countless shades of moss blanketing every rock and root. It was easy to see why this place had inspired Hayao Miyazaki and his Studio Ghibli team. The forest felt like a scene straight out of *Princess Mononoke*.

I spent hours wandering through the forest, marveling at the intricate beauty of the moss and the grandeur of the ancient trees. The play of light and shadow created an ethereal atmosphere, and I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. It was a truly immersive experience, one that I will never forget.

According to my research, to fully experience Kokemusu Forest, visitors should take the 'Taikoiwa Round Trip Course'. The courses are flexible, allowing for spontaneous changes of mind. The trails are marked with signposts and neon fabric ties.

As the day drew to a close, I made a quick stop at Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi. I had heard rave reviews about their unique flavors and wanted to try some local gelato before heading back to my accommodation. It's always a treat to end the day with something sweet, and I was curious to see what unique flavors Yakushima had to offer. They use local ingredients, which gives the gelato a unique taste. I opted for the Tankan orange and sea salt flavors, which were both delicious and refreshing. The perfect way to end a perfect day.

Finally, for dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at hiyoriya. This restaurant is known for its vegan cuisine and locally sourced ingredients. As someone who appreciates fresh and healthy food, I was eager to try their offerings. The restaurant is small and cozy, with a limited seating. It's best to call ahead and make a reservation.

The meal at hiyoriya was a delightful experience. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. I savored every bite, appreciating the care and attention that went into preparing the meal. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with natural beauty and culinary delights.

I am looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Yakushima Shrine and the East China Sea Observatory. I'm excited to explore more of Yakushima's cultural and scenic attractions. I'm also planning to have breakfast at Yakushima Airport Restaurant, lunch at Matsutake, and dinner at Kamogawa Restaurant. And if I have time, I might check out Seirios, a local bar. It's going to be another exciting day on this beautiful island.

As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the wonders of Yakushima. The island's natural beauty is truly breathtaking, and I feel a deep connection to the land and its ancient forests. It is a place that nourishes the soul and inspires a sense of awe and wonder. I am grateful for the memories I have made today, and I look forward to continuing my journey of exploration and discovery.

The day reminded me of a quote by John Muir:

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

And with that, I bid you goodnight from the enchanting island of Yakushima. Tomorrow, more adventures await!
