Solo Adventure in Yakushima: Exploring Japan's Natural Wonder
Day 12: Whispers of the Ancients: Day 12 in Yakushima
Embark on a captivating journey through Yakushima's mystical forests, exploring lighthouses, ancient trees, and local flavors on day 12.
Lighthouses and Whispering Trees
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of human endeavor standing against the backdrop of nature's ancient grandeur. From the stoic Yakushima-todai Lighthouse to the entwined Meoto Sugi, each moment felt like a step deeper into the soul of this island.
Explore the breathtaking Yakushima-todai Lighthouse, a stunning landmark surrounded by the natural beauty of Yakushima Island, perfect for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It's funny, even airport food feels special here. Maybe it's the anticipation of what the day holds, or perhaps it's the knowledge that even the most mundane meal is enjoyed on an island teeming with life and history. After fueling up, I set off towards the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse.
The drive itself was a treat, winding along the coastal roads, the sea a constant companion to my left. The lighthouse stands proudly on Cape Nagata, a sentinel watching over the waters. Although I couldn't go inside, standing there, I could feel the history and purpose of this place. It has been guiding ships since 1897. The views were stunning, with Kouerrabu Island visible in the distance, and the vast expanse of the ocean stretching out before me. It was a moment of quiet contemplation, the wind carrying whispers of sailors and distant lands.
The forest is a peculiar organism of unlimited kindness and benevolence that makes no demands for its sustenance and extends generously the products of its life activity; it affords protection to all beings, offering shade even to the axeman who destroys it.
Leaving the lighthouse, I headed inland, towards the heart of Yakushima's ancient forest. My destination was Meoto Sugi, a pair of cedar trees that have grown together, resembling a husband and wife embracing. The hike to get there was invigorating, the air thick with the scent of cedar and damp earth. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating an ethereal glow that seemed to breathe life into the forest floor. I passed other ancient trees, each one a testament to the island's remarkable longevity. It's humbling to be in the presence of such ancient beings, their roots reaching deep into the earth, their branches reaching towards the sky, having witnessed centuries unfold.

Reaching Meoto Sugi was a truly special moment. The trees stand tall and proud, their trunks intertwined, a symbol of enduring love and partnership. I spent some time there, simply observing the trees, listening to the rustling of the leaves, and feeling the gentle breeze on my face. It’s moments like these that make solo travel so rewarding – the freedom to linger, to absorb, to connect with nature on a deeply personal level. I thought of Marie and the kids back in Antwerp, and how much they would have loved to see this natural wonder. Perhaps one day, I'll bring them here to experience the magic of Yakushima firsthand.
For lunch, I stopped at Wakadaisho, a local restaurant in Miyanoura known for its fresh seafood. I decided to try their sashimi platter, eager to taste the local flavors. The fish was incredibly fresh, the flavors clean and vibrant. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, a testament to its popularity. The staff were friendly and accommodating, even offering me a taste of local shochu, a potent distilled beverage made from sweet potatoes. It was a welcome warmth on a day that had been both physically and spiritually invigorating.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge my love for books and visit Tomari Book Store. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the island, this little shop is a treasure trove of local literature and global classics. As an antique restorer, I always appreciate the stories objects can tell, and books are no exception. I spent a happy hour browsing the shelves, chatting with the owner about the island's history and culture, and discovering new authors and perspectives. I picked up a few books to add to my collection, eager to delve into them during my quiet evenings here.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to SamPotei for dinner. This restaurant, located by the Anbo River, came highly recommended for its cozy atmosphere and delicious food. I wasn't disappointed. The interior was warm and inviting, with wooden furniture and soft lighting creating a relaxing ambiance. The jazz music playing in the background added to the charm. I ordered the stir-fried baby scallop and a local craft beer. The scallops were cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, and the beer was crisp and refreshing. The staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I took a stroll along the Anbo River, the stars twinkling above me. The sounds of the river and the gentle breeze created a soothing symphony, washing away the day's fatigue. As I walked, I reflected on the day's experiences – the lighthouse standing as a beacon of hope, the Meoto Sugi whispering tales of love and endurance, the delicious food nourishing my body and soul, and the books opening new worlds to explore. Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and spiritual connection.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the botanic gardens and Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park [Itinerary of Tomorrow]. I’m looking forward to immersing myself in more of Yakushima’s natural wonders. For now, though, it’s time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure on this magical island. I am also planning on visiting Pukaridō to buy a souvenir for Marie and the kids [Itinerary of Tomorrow]. The thought of bringing a piece of Yakushima back home fills me with warmth.
As I drift off to sleep, I am filled with gratitude for this solo journey, for the opportunity to connect with nature, to learn about a new culture, and to discover new aspects of myself. Yakushima is more than just a destination; it's an experience that will stay with me long after I leave its shores. The island has a way of slowing things down, of making you appreciate the simple things in life, of reminding you that even in the midst of chaos, there is always beauty to be found. Perhaps that's the greatest lesson I'll take away from this adventure – a renewed appreciation for the present moment, and a deeper connection to the world around me.
