Akchour's Embrace: A Day of Nature's Wonders
Today was a day dedicated to the raw, untamed beauty just outside the blue embrace of Chefchaouen. I'm talking about Akchour, a place where waterfalls cascade and the Rif Mountains stand guard. It's a welcome change of scenery, trading the town's tranquil blue for the vibrant greens and rushing waters of Morocco's natural landscapes.
The day began, as most do here, with a delightful breakfast at Mounir Food. Klaus and I shared a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea – a ritual I've quickly come to adore. It's the perfect fuel for a day of hiking and exploration.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we met up with our friends, and we piled into a *Grand Taxi* headed for Akchour. The 45-minute drive was a scenic prelude to the day's main event, with the Rif Mountains looming larger and larger as we approached. The landscape shifted from the soft blues of Chefchaouen to the rugged greens and browns of the countryside. I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation bubbling inside me.
The journey to Akchour is a reminder that true beauty often lies just beyond the well-trodden path.
Upon arriving, the air was noticeably cooler, a refreshing change from the town. We passed a few restaurants and souvenir stalls, a gentle reminder that even in nature, the threads of commerce are never too far away. The trailhead was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to experience Akchour's natural wonders.
We opted for the hike to the Grande Cascade D'akchour, the larger of the two waterfalls. The trail, as I'd read, was well-maintained but included a few steep sections. No matter – Klaus and I have tackled far more challenging hikes in the Odenwald forest back home. This was more about soaking in the scenery than testing our limits.

The hike itself was enchanting. The trail snaked along the river, crossing it several times via large cement blocks and makeshift wooden bridges. The sound of rushing water was a constant companion, and the air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth. The Rif Mountains rose majestically on either side, their slopes covered in a thick, green forest.
I found myself stopping frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to capture the beauty around me. The way the sunlight filtered through the trees, the vibrant green moss clinging to the rocks, the crystal-clear water cascading over the stones – it was all so captivating.
We paused at several of the small areas along the way, resting on chairs where we bought refreshments. I resisted the urge to buy a tagine, knowing we had a lunch reservation back in Chefchaouen, but I did indulge in a refreshing orange juice. The vendors were friendly and welcoming, and it was nice to support the local economy.
As we neared the Grande Cascade, the sound of rushing water grew louder and louder. Finally, we rounded a bend and there it was – a long, thin stream of water cascading rapidly into the pool below. It wasn't the most voluminous waterfall I'd ever seen, but its height and the sheer drama of its setting were undeniable.
We took some time to simply admire the falls, feeling the cool spray on our faces. Some of our group were brave enough to follow the small path that goes around the right side of the pool to get behind the waterfall. I, however, was content to stay put, not wanting to risk a slip on the wet rocks. Instead, I sat on a nearby boulder and journaled my thoughts, trying to capture the essence of the moment.
The beauty of Akchour is not just in the destination, but in the journey itself. It's in the small details – the way the light plays on the water, the sound of the birds singing in the trees, the friendly faces of the local Berbers. It's a place that nourishes the soul and reminds you of the simple joys of being in nature.
After our hike, we made our way back to Chefchaouen, famished and ready for a hearty lunch. We chose Restaurant Triana, known for its cozy ambiance and excellent service. I opted for a traditional tagine, while Klaus chose a grilled fish. Both were delicious, and we savored every bite, recounting our adventures of the day.

Before heading back to the hotel, we decided to take a quick detour to Blue. concept store. I had heard so much about this shop, and I was eager to see it for myself. It was indeed a visual feast, with soaps individually wrapped in gift packs hanging from the ceiling. The scents were intoxicating, and I ended up buying a few bars as gifts for my friends back home.

For dinner, we chose Assaada, a local restaurant known for its Moroccan cuisine. I decided to be adventurous and try a traditional Moroccan soup, while Klaus stuck with his favorite, grilled chicken. The food was simple but flavorful, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude. Akchour had been everything I had hoped for and more – a refreshing escape into nature, a chance to connect with the local culture, and a reminder of the beauty that exists just beyond the blue walls of Chefchaouen. And to share it all with my friends made it even more special.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of the natural beauty surrounding Chefchaouen with a visit to Parc National de Talassemtane and Jebel El-Kelaa Summit. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Sunset at sunset, a local bar, to watch the sun dip below the horizon. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure in this magical corner of Morocco.
I must remember to buy a travel guidebook and a portable charger. I knew I had forgotten something!
