A Blue Awakening in Chefchaouen

After a scenic drive with my friends from the airport, I finally arrived in Chefchaouen, the blue pearl of Morocco. The air was crisp, carrying a hint of wood smoke, and the promise of adventure hung heavy in the air. I was eager to dive into the heart of this blue-washed city, a place I'd only ever dreamed of seeing. Today marked the start of our eleven-day journey, and I couldn't wait to lose myself in its enchanting embrace.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Bab Ssour. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff immediately made us feel at home. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, a symphony of flavors that included warm bread, olives, and a fragrant mint tea. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration. Klaus would have loved this place.

Fueled by a hearty breakfast, we ventured into the Chefchaouen Medina. The moment I stepped through the ancient gates, I was enveloped in a world of blue. Every building, every wall, every doorway was painted in a different shade of blue, creating a mesmerizing effect. It felt like walking through a dream. The Medina was a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets, each turn revealing a new and captivating scene. Sunlight filtered through the alleyways, casting shadows that danced on the blue walls. I paused, taking in the serenity of the moment, the gentle murmur of the city a soothing soundtrack to my exploration. I couldn't help but think of how much my target audience would appreciate this place. I made a mental note to mention this in my blog. The weather in December is moderately chilly and breezy, so I was sure to bring a sweater.

We spent hours wandering through the Medina, getting delightfully lost in its maze-like streets. The shops were filled with colorful crafts, from hand-woven carpets to intricate pottery. I couldn't resist purchasing a few small souvenirs, tokens to remind me of this magical place. The shopkeepers were warm and welcoming, eager to share stories about their crafts and their city. I even tried my hand at haggling, a common practice in Morocco, and managed to snag a beautiful ceramic bowl at a reasonable price.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are made when you simply allow yourself to get lost.

For lunch, we stopped at Cafe Clock, a vibrant spot known for its modern Moroccan cuisine and lively atmosphere. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a melting pot of cultures. I ordered a traditional tagine, a slow-cooked stew with tender meat and flavorful vegetables. It was a culinary masterpiece, a testament to the rich flavors of Moroccan cuisine. The Cafe Clock also offers cooking classes, which I found interesting.

After lunch, we made our way to the Kasbah, a historic fortress located in the heart of Chefchaouen. Built in the 15th century, the Kasbah has served as a residence for governors, a military arsenal, and even a prison. Today, it houses an ethnological museum, showcasing artifacts that reflect the region's history and traditions. I was particularly fascinated by the displays of traditional musical instruments, pottery, and embroidery.

We climbed to the top of the Kasbah's tower, where we were rewarded with panoramic views of Chefchaouen and the surrounding Rif Mountains. The city stretched out before us, a sea of blue rooftops and winding streets. The mountains loomed in the distance, their peaks shrouded in mist. It was a breathtaking sight, a moment I knew I would never forget. The entrance fee to the Kasbah for foreign tourists is 6€.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves drawn back to the Medina, eager to experience its magic once more. The streets were now bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, casting long shadows that danced on the blue walls. The air was filled with the aroma of spices and the sound of laughter, creating a vibrant and intoxicating atmosphere.

For dinner, we chose Chez Hicham, a local restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan dishes and cozy ambiance. I savored a delicious tagine, the flavors of the spices mingling perfectly with the tender meat. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. One thing I made sure I did was to try the Moroccan chicken salad.

Chefchaouen has exceeded all of my expectations, captivating me with its beauty, its culture, and its people. I am excited for tomorrow's adventure, which includes a visit to Ras El Ma and Plaza Uta el Hamman. But for now, I will close my eyes and dream of blue.

I did forget to bring a travel guidebook and a portable charger, but those are minor details. I am sure I will manage without them.

I must say, this trip is a bit like that time Klaus and I tried to recreate a Montenegrin feast in Heidelberg. We ended up with more mess than masterpiece, but the laughter and memories were priceless. Just like that adventure, Chefchaouen is proving to be full of unexpected turns and delightful surprises. It reminds me of that saying...

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
