Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Konoba Baća in Ston. As someone who appreciates history, I found the ambiance of the konoba, with its traditional decor, incredibly charming. It felt like stepping back in time, a sentiment that always resonates deeply with me. Klaus would have loved this place, with its old-world charm and historical significance. We sat outside, enjoying the morning sun as we savored a selection of local delicacies. The fresh bread, homemade cheeses, and locally sourced honey were the perfect start to our day. It reminded me of breakfasts back in Kolašin, simple yet bursting with flavor. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes when I return to Heidelberg.

The beach was secluded and tranquil, a hidden gem away from the bustling tourist crowds. The crystal-clear waters were so inviting that I couldn't resist taking a dip. The feeling of the sun on my skin and the cool water washing over me was incredibly refreshing. It was a moment of pure bliss, a chance to connect with nature and embrace a sense of freedom. I felt like I was a world away from the Heidelberg University Library, where I spend most of my days surrounded by books and manuscripts. This was a welcome escape, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life.

The drive to Donja Vrućica was scenic, passing through vineyards and olive groves. As we arrived, we were greeted by the warm and welcoming owners, who made us feel like part of their family. The setting was idyllic, a rustic farmhouse surrounded by lush gardens. We sat at a long wooden table, shaded by a canopy of grapevines, and prepared for a feast. The food was simply divine, a celebration of local ingredients and traditional recipes. We savored grilled lamb, fresh seafood, and homemade pasta, all accompanied by the region's renowned red wine. Each dish was prepared with love and care, a testament to the passion of the owners. It was the kind of meal that nourishes not only the body but also the soul. The experience reminded me of the many family gatherings I had in Kolašin, where food was always at the center of our celebrations. Edivo Wine Bar in Drače offered a unique opportunity to taste wine aged in the depths of the Adriatic Sea. I must admit, I was intrigued by the concept. We arrived at the wine bar and were greeted by the friendly staff, who explained the process of underwater wine aging. The wine is stored in amphorae at the bottom of the sea for several months, where the constant temperature and pressure create a unique flavor profile. We sampled a selection of these underwater wines, and I was amazed by the complexity and depth of flavor. It was unlike anything I had ever tasted. The experience was made even more special by the opportunity to dive and explore the underwater wine cellar. Although I am not a certified diver, some of my friends were, and they regaled us with stories of the magical underwater world they encountered. They described the sunken ship where the wine is stored, teeming with marine life, a truly surreal sight.

We savored fresh oysters, grilled fish, and black risotto, all prepared with the finest local ingredients. The flavors were intense and satisfying, a perfect ending to a day of culinary delights. The black risotto was particularly memorable, a dish that I will try to recreate when I return home. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. It was a reminder of the vibrant culture and hospitality of the Croatian people.

The Pelješac Peninsula had so much more to offer, and I was eager to discover its hidden treasures. I am particularly looking forward to visiting Wine Shop Skaramuča tomorrow, as I would love to bring some local wines back to Heidelberg for Klaus to enjoy. He always appreciates a good bottle of wine, especially one with a story to tell. And the wines of the Pelješac Peninsula certainly have a story to tell, a story of tradition, passion, and the unique terroir of this remarkable region.
