Farewell, Vietnam: A Day of Mountains, Monasteries, and Memories

Our final day in Vietnam was a blend of spiritual reflection and culinary indulgence. As our adventure neared its end, Maximilian and I ventured beyond Hoi An to explore the neighboring city of Da Nang. Today was about soaking in the serene atmosphere of ancient sites and savoring the flavors that have defined our journey. It was a fitting farewell to a country that has captured our hearts with its beauty and warmth.

We started our day early, eager to make the most of our last full day in Vietnam. After a quick check on the weather, which promised a mix of sunshine and scattered clouds, we packed our essentials, including my trusty camera and a light raincoat. It was time to explore the famed The Marble Mountains and a significant local temple.

Exploring the Marble Mountains

Our first stop was the Marble Mountains, a cluster of limestone and marble hills rising dramatically from the coastal plains. Each mountain is named after one of the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, representing a unique aspect of Vietnamese spirituality. As we approached, the grandeur of these natural formations was immediately striking.

We decided to tackle Thuy Son, the largest and most visited of the mountains. The climb began with a series of steps carved into the marble, winding past various shrines and pagodas. The air was thick with incense, and the sounds of chanting monks echoed through the caves, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere. Maximilian, ever the history enthusiast, was captivated by the intricate carvings and the stories behind each monument. I, of course, was in my element, snapping photos at every turn, trying to capture the play of light and shadow within the caves.

The Marble Mountains were more than just a visual spectacle; they were a journey into the heart of Vietnamese culture and spirituality.

One of the highlights was the Huyen Khong cave, a natural chamber transformed into a temple, with sunlight streaming through an opening in the ceiling. The effect was ethereal, illuminating the statues of Buddha and various deities. We spent a good hour exploring the different grottoes and viewpoints, each offering a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape. Despite the crowds, there were moments of quiet contemplation, a chance to reflect on our travels and the beauty of the world around us.

A Visit to Chùa Linh Ứng

Next on our itinerary was Chùa Linh Ứng, a pagoda renowned not only for its spiritual significance but also for its stunning location on the Son Tra Peninsula. As we drove towards the peninsula, the iconic white statue of Lady Buddha came into view, towering over the coastline.

The temple complex itself was a marvel of traditional Vietnamese architecture, with intricate roofs, ornate carvings, and vibrant colors. The main hall housed several impressive Buddha statues, and the courtyard offered panoramic views of the ocean and the city of Da Nang. We joined the locals in lighting incense and offering prayers, feeling a sense of peace and connection with the community.

Maximilian was particularly moved by the serenity of the place, commenting on how the temple seemed to radiate a sense of calm. I found myself drawn to the intricate details of the architecture, the way the artisans had blended artistry and devotion into every corner of the complex.

Culinary Delights in Da Nang

After a morning of exploration, our stomachs were rumbling, and it was time to indulge in Da Nang’s culinary scene. For breakfast, we stopped at An Nhàn - Exquisite Cultural Gallery & Coffee. This charming spot offered not only delicious coffee but also a glimpse into local culture with its art gallery. Maximilian enjoyed a strong Vietnamese coffee, while I opted for a refreshing iced tea, both perfect for a warm morning.

Lunch took us to Thìa Gỗ Restaurant Da Nang, a place recommended for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. We savored local specialties such as bánh xèo (crispy pancakes) and mì quảng (turmeric noodles), each dish bursting with flavor. The restaurant had a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, making our meal even more enjoyable.

For our final dinner in Vietnam, we chose Galina Restaurant Đà Nẵng, known for its elegant ambiance and stunning sea views. We indulged in a seafood feast, sampling fresh catches prepared with local herbs and spices. The sound of the waves, the gentle sea breeze, and the exquisite food created a magical atmosphere, a perfect ending to our culinary journey.

A Nightcap at Sky Bar Hoi An (rastabar)

As the day wound down, we decided to revisit Hoi An for one last experience: a nightcap at Sky Bar Hoi An (rastabar). This rooftop bar offered panoramic views of the city, and we sipped on expertly crafted cocktails as we watched the lights twinkle below. The bar had a lively, touristy vibe, and we enjoyed mingling with fellow travelers, sharing stories of our adventures.

“Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” – Miriam Beard

It was a bittersweet moment, knowing that our time in Vietnam was coming to an end. But as I looked out over the illuminated cityscape, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared and the memories we had created.
