First Day Musings in Yakushima

The journey to Yakushima was long, but the anticipation of exploring this UNESCO World Heritage site kept my spirits high. After arriving yesterday, I was eager to dive straight into the heart of Yakushima's culture and history. Today was all about soaking in as much as possible, and I couldn't wait to share my first impressions.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It was incredibly convenient, located right in the airport, and offered a comforting taste of local cuisine. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. The friendly staff made me feel welcome, and it was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

After breakfast, I headed to the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center. The center is dedicated to educating visitors about the island's unique ecosystems and conservation efforts. The exhibits were fascinating, detailing the island's geology, flora, and fauna. I learned about the ancient cedar trees, some of which are over a thousand years old, and the unique wildlife that calls Yakushima home, including the Yakushima macaques and Yaku deer. The center also provided valuable information about hiking etiquette and how to minimize my impact on the environment.

The displays at the Conservation Center explained how Yakushima Island possesses a pristine natural forest of cedars more than one thousand years old, and an uninterrupted vertical distribution of vegetation that extends from the coast to the mountain peaks. Approximately 20% of the island is registered as a World Natural Heritage site.

The island whispers stories of resilience, nature, and the delicate balance between humanity and the environment.

Next on my list was the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. This museum offered a glimpse into the island's cultural heritage, showcasing artifacts from ancient times to the present. I was particularly intrigued by the exhibits on the island's traditional industries, such as fishing and forestry. One of the most impressive displays was a replica of a traditional house from Kuchinoerabu Island, built before World War II. It was fascinating to see how the islanders lived in the past, relying on the natural resources around them.

After immersing myself in history and culture, it was time for lunch. I decided to try Katagiri Flying Fish Restaurant, known for its local specialty: flying fish. I opted for the flying fish hitsumabushi, a dish similar to teriyaki. The flying fish was chopped and served over rice in a lacquerware container. You can enjoy this dish in three unique ways. First, savor it as is, then add condiments such as sesame seeds and chopped seaweed. Finally, pour agodashi broth (dried flying fish broth) over rice to enjoy it ochazuke-style. The restaurant itself was cozy, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. It was a delightful culinary experience that gave me a true taste of Yakushima.

In the afternoon, I explored the Yakushima Market, a bustling hub of local produce and crafts. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and aromas of the fresh fruits and vegetables. I sampled some local citrus fruits, like the ponkan and tankan oranges, which were incredibly juicy and flavorful. I also browsed the handicrafts, admiring the intricate woodwork and pottery. It was a great place to pick up some souvenirs and support the local community. There is even a recognizable orange-shaped huge signboard in front of the market.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at Il Mare, an Italian restaurant near the airport. It might seem odd to have Italian food in Japan, but Il Mare is known for its authentic cuisine and use of local ingredients. I ordered a seafood pasta dish, which was made with fresh, local seafood and a rich tomato sauce. The flavors were incredible, and it was a satisfying end to a day of exploration. The restaurant is conveniently located within 10 minutes walk from the airport.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a moment to reflect on the day. Yakushima had already captivated me with its natural beauty and rich culture. I was grateful for the opportunity to learn about the island's history, taste its local flavors, and connect with its people. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what adventures tomorrow would bring. I'm particularly excited about tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to the Shiratani Unsui Gorge and Wilson's Stump. I've heard so much about these mystical locations, and I can't wait to experience them firsthand.

The weather in Yakushima in July is generally warm and humid, with temperatures ranging from 26°C to 29°C. There is a high chance of rain, with an average of 207 mm of precipitation during the month. Despite the rain, there are also approximately 225 hours of sunshine this month. The average sea temperature is 28°C.

Even though I forgot to pack insect repellent and a portable phone charger, I managed to make the best of my first day in Yakushima. I'll be sure to pick those up tomorrow. It was a day filled with discovery, delicious food, and a deep appreciation for this unique island. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings!

I am continually reminded of Markus and Aino back in Helsinki. I know Aino would have been fascinated by the exhibits at the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. I miss them dearly, but I know this solo trip will give me a chance to recharge and reconnect with myself. I can't wait to share my experiences with them when I return.

I know Jennifer would be proud of me for venturing out on this solo trip. I'm embracing the freedom and solitude, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me. It's a far cry from the familiar landscapes of Alaska and Finland, but I'm finding beauty and wonder in every corner of this enchanting island.
