An exhilarating day exploring Gran Paradiso, from scaling its peak to discovering local crafts and savoring authentic Italian flavors.
A Day of Triumph and Tranquility
Today was a blend of exhilarating challenge and serene discovery. Gran Paradiso National Park truly lives up to its name, offering a slice of paradise for every kind of adventurer. From the ambitious climb towards Gran Paradiso peak to the charming Vallone dell'Urtier, it was a day filled with unforgettable moments.

My day began with an early breakfast at Hotel du Grand Paradis - 1899 Auberge Boutique. The spread was delightful, featuring fresh pastries, local cheeses, and strong Italian coffee – the perfect fuel for the day ahead. I savored every bite, knowing I’d need the energy for the adventures that awaited. The cozy atmosphere of the hotel, with its rustic charm and stunning views, set a perfect tone for the day.

Fueled and ready, I set off towards Gran Paradiso. Although I didn't attempt to reach the very summit at 4061m, knowing my limits as a hiker is key, I spent a good portion of the morning hiking as far up as I felt comfortable, enjoying the breathtaking panoramic views. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the occasional chirping of birds and the distant sound of glacial streams. I paused frequently to take photos, trying to capture the immensity and beauty of the landscape. I even managed to spot a few ibexes gracefully navigating the rocky terrain – a truly majestic sight!
The mountains are calling and I must go.
After descending from Gran Paradiso, I decided to explore Vallone dell'Urtier. This valley offered a completely different experience – a tranquil, verdant landscape filled with wildflowers and the soothing sounds of flowing water. The hike through the valley was gentle and relaxing, a welcome contrast to the more strenuous climb earlier in the day. I took my time, admiring the vibrant colors of the alpine flora and the crystal-clear streams that crisscrossed the valley. It was the perfect opportunity to simply be present and soak in the natural beauty around me.

Lunch was at Bar Ristorante Valnontey in Valnontey. I opted for a simple yet delicious pasta dish, made with fresh local ingredients. Sitting outside, basking in the warm sunshine, I felt a deep sense of contentment. It’s moments like these, when I can appreciate the simple pleasures of life, that make traveling so rewarding.

In the afternoon, I ventured into the village of Cogne, eager to experience some local culture. My first stop was Les Dentellières de Cogne, a charming shop showcasing the intricate art of Cogne lace-making. I was fascinated by the delicate designs and the skill of the artisans. I even purchased a small lace bookmark as a memento of my visit.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at Bar à Fromage, a mountain restaurant known for its exquisite cheese dishes. Being a bit of a cheese connoisseur, I couldn’t resist trying their fondue, made with a blend of local cheeses and served with crusty bread. It was rich, creamy, and utterly divine – the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, I plan to continue my exploration of Gran Paradiso National Park with a visit to Monte Creya and the Fondation Grand Paradis. I’m particularly excited about learning more about the park's history and conservation efforts at the Fondation. And perhaps a drink at the Old Distillery bar afterwards. But for now, I’m content to relax and reflect on the day’s adventures. Gran Paradiso has already captured my heart, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
It's funny, I almost forgot to pack sunscreen! Luckily, I remembered at the last minute, a small victory for my usually forgetful self. I really need to get a portable phone charger too, as I almost ran out of battery today!
This trip has been an amazing reminder of why I love solo travel. There’s a unique sense of freedom and self-discovery that comes with exploring a new place on your own. It allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience, to connect with nature and culture on a deeper level, and to challenge yourself in ways you never thought possible. And it’s during these moments that I feel most alive and most grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful world.
