A Day Among Giants

Today was a day of exploration and immersion in the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park. From scaling the heights of Monte Creya to delving into the region's rich history and culture, and of course, indulging in the local cuisine, it was a day that truly captured the essence of this stunning Italian landscape. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're surrounded by such natural beauty and intriguing history.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Hostellerie De L'Atelier in Cogne. I opted for the Seupetta di Cogne, a traditional Valdostan dish featuring a risotto with fontina cheese, melted butter, and croutons. It was the perfect fuel for the day ahead, offering a comforting warmth that prepared me for the alpine adventures awaiting. Jennifer's Tip: Don't miss the chance to try local specialties; they offer a true taste of the region's culinary heritage. I remembered Maximilian mentioning how much he enjoyed trying new foods when we traveled, and I made a mental note to bring him back some Tegole cookies.

Fueled and ready, I set off towards Monte Creya. The drive was scenic, with the SP47 road winding its way towards the Gran Paradiso National Park. As I drove, I couldn't help but marvel at the landscape. The narrow roads offered stunning views, and I made sure to drive carefully, soaking in the beauty around every bend. Parking the car, I took a moment to appreciate the crisp mountain air and the panoramic views before starting my hike. The parking area was the perfect starting point, with well-marked trailheads leading towards the summit. I made sure I had my hiking boots on tight, a water bottle in hand, and my camera ready to capture the stunning vistas.

The hike to Monte Creya was invigorating. The trail was well-marked but steep in sections, a good challenge for someone used to the rather flat terrain of Berlin. As I ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The diverse flora and fauna were a treat for the eyes, and I paused frequently to take photos of the wildflowers and the rugged landscape. The air was so clean and fresh, a welcome change from the city. About halfway up, I realized I had forgotten to pack sunscreen. Note to self: always double-check the essentials, even when you think you're prepared! I made a mental note to pick some up tomorrow. I took a moment to appreciate the solitude and the stunning views.

Reaching the summit of Monte Creya was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views were simply stunning, stretching across the rugged Alpine landscape. I could see the snow-capped peaks of the Gran Paradiso massif in the distance, and the lush green valleys below. The sense of accomplishment was immense, knowing I had conquered this natural marvel on my own. I spent some time at the top, taking photos and simply soaking in the beauty around me. I even managed to spot a few local wildlife species, which added to the thrill of the climb.

After descending Monte Creya, I drove to the Fondation Grand Paradis, keen to immerse myself in the cultural and historical aspects of the region. This organization is dedicated to showcasing the natural and cultural heritage of the Aosta Valley. The Fondation houses the visitor center of the Gran Paradiso National Park and the Alpinart exhibition center. Here, I learned about the history of the magnetite mines of Liconi, Colonna, and Costa del Pino, located on the slopes of Monte Creya. These mines, which operated from Roman times until 1979, were once a major source of income for the local inhabitants. The remains of the cableways and buildings were fascinating to see, offering a glimpse into the region's industrial past. The exhibition on the mines provided a comprehensive overview of the mining history of Cogne, highlighting its significance to the local community.

After a morning of hiking and historical exploration, I was ready for lunch. I headed to Ristorante e Locanda Chalet del Lago in Ceresole Reale. The restaurant's location was perfect, offering stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. I opted for a traditional Italian meal, enjoying the fresh pasta and local cheese. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were friendly and helpful. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing my day. The Chalet del Lago is also known for using eco-friendly products, which is something I really appreciate. It's great to see businesses that are committed to sustainability.

In the late afternoon, I decided to visit the Old Distillery, a local bar in the area. I was curious to sample some of the regional spirits and experience the local nightlife. The Old Distillery was a charming spot, with a cozy atmosphere and a wide selection of local brews and spirits. I tried a grappa, a traditional Italian digestif, and enjoyed the unique flavors and aromas. I learned about the distillery's history and its commitment to producing high-quality spirits. It was a great way to unwind after a busy day of hiking and exploring.

For dinner, I chose Osteria Dei Viaggiatori in Noasca, a restaurant known for its traditional Piedmontese cuisine. The menu featured a variety of local specialties, and I decided to try the Carne alla Losa, a dish of meat cooked on a hot stone at the table. It was a unique and delicious experience, and the meat was tender and flavorful. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and attentive. It was the perfect way to end my day, savoring the flavors of the region and reflecting on all the incredible experiences I had.

Gran Paradiso National Park had truly exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and culinary delights. From the challenging hike to Monte Creya to the insightful visit to the Fondation Grand Paradis, and the delicious meals at local restaurants, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery. I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring, as I planned to visit the Castello di Fénis and the Royal Hunting House at Orvieille. I knew that another day of adventure and exploration awaited, and I was eager to embrace it.
