Day 1: Art Beneath the Surface & Beside the Sea

The journey to Naoshima was quite the trek, but I've finally arrived, ready to dive headfirst into the island's famed art scene. Today was all about experiencing the unique blend of art, architecture, and nature that Naoshima so effortlessly offers. I'm excited to share my first impressions and adventures on this captivating island.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. This charming little spot, tucked away in Honmura, was the perfect way to start the day. The cafe is known for its fresh, local ingredients and I opted for their seasonal breakfast set. It was a delightful combination of flavors and textures, and the cozy atmosphere made me feel right at home. It's the kind of place where you could easily spend hours just soaking in the ambiance. Feeling energized, I set off to my first destination: the Chichu Art Museum.

The Chichu Art Museum is an architectural marvel designed by Tadao Ando. The museum is built mostly underground to minimize its impact on the natural landscape. As I descended into the earth, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. The museum's design uses natural light to illuminate the artworks, creating a unique viewing experience that changes throughout the day.

The museum houses a small but impressive collection of art, including Claude Monet's *Water Lilies*. Seeing these iconic paintings in person was breathtaking. The way the natural light filtered through the space, subtly shifting the colors and textures of the paintings, was simply mesmerizing. It felt like I was seeing them for the first time.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

The other installations at Chichu were equally captivating. James Turrell's works played with light and perception, creating immersive experiences that challenged my senses. Walter De Maria's installation was a powerful and thought-provoking piece that left a lasting impression. The entire museum felt like a carefully curated journey, a dialogue between art, architecture, and nature.

After spending a few hours at Chichu, I took the free shuttle bus to the Benesse House Museum.

This museum is another architectural gem designed by Tadao Ando, seamlessly blending art and accommodation. The Benesse House Museum is built on a hill overlooking the sea, offering stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea.

The museum's collection is diverse, featuring works by both Japanese and international artists. I particularly enjoyed the outdoor sculptures, which are scattered throughout the grounds, interacting with the natural landscape. Yayoi Kusama's yellow pumpkin is perhaps the most iconic of these sculptures, and it was a delight to see it in person.

I had lunch at the Terrace Restaurant inside Benesse House.

The restaurant offers panoramic views of the sea, and the food was delicious. I opted for a light meal, a perfect way to refuel before continuing my exploration of the museum. The Terrace Restaurant is known for using local ingredients and offering a menu that changes daily.

Before leaving Benesse House, I stopped by the Benesse House Shop.

The shop sells a variety of art goods, souvenirs, and hotel amenities. I picked up a few postcards and a small sculpture as a memento of my visit. The Benesse House Shop is a great place to find unique gifts and souvenirs.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to New Olympia for dinner.

This cozy sushi restaurant is run by a father-son duo and is known for its fresh seafood. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the sushi was some of the best I've ever had. I savored every bite, reflecting on the incredible day I'd had.

Naoshima has truly captured my imagination. The way art is integrated into every aspect of the island is remarkable. It's not just about the museums; it's about the entire experience of being on the island, surrounded by art and nature. As someone who appreciates sustainable living, I admire how Naoshima balances art with environmental consciousness. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which include the Art House Project: Minamidera and the Lee Ufan Museum. I plan to start the day with breakfast at Café Ippo, followed by lunch at maimai, and dinner at Cin.na.mon. I might even check out Bar SARU for a nightcap.

Naoshima is more than just an art destination; it's an experience that engages all the senses. It's a place where you can slow down, connect with nature, and be inspired by art. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I am also excited to see what the Setouchi Triennale 2025 will bring to the island next spring. I've read that a new museum, the Naoshima New Museum of Art, is scheduled to open in spring 2025, which will feature works by Asian artists. It seems like Naoshima's art scene will only continue to grow and evolve.

And Maximilian, if you're reading this, you would absolutely love it here! Maybe we can plan a trip back together sometime soon.

Until tomorrow,
Jennifer

P.S. I really need to remember to buy sunscreen tomorrow. The August sun here is no joke!
