First Impressions of San Cristobal

The journey to San Cristobal de las Casas was quite the trek, but stepping out of the shuttle, I immediately felt the unique energy of this highland city. The crisp mountain air, combined with the vibrant colors of the buildings, created an atmosphere that was both invigorating and calming. I couldn't wait to dive into the local culture and see what adventures awaited me.

My first day in San Cristobal de las Casas was a whirlwind of cultural immersion, delicious food, and the kind of unexpected discoveries that make solo travel so rewarding. After settling into Sombra del Agua, I was eager to start exploring. The hotel is lovely; it has a very calming atmosphere that will be great to come back to each night. I had a quick moment of panic when I realized I'd forgotten my portable charger and rain jacket, but I decided not to let it dampen my spirits. After all, a little improvisation is part of the adventure, right?

First stop: breakfast at El Secreto. The name alone intrigued me, and the reviews promised an authentic Chiapas experience. It was easy to get to the restaurant with public transportation. The restaurant was a delightful introduction to the local cuisine. I savored a traditional Chiapan breakfast, which included *tascalate*, a chocolate and corn drink. Sipping the warm, spiced beverage, I watched the city come to life around me. The air was filled with the sounds of Spanish chatter and the aromas of freshly brewed coffee and sweet bread. It was the perfect way to start my day, and I felt a surge of excitement for all the experiences that lay ahead. I made a mental note to try to recreate this drink when I got back to Berlin for Maximilian. I know he would enjoy it.

With a full stomach and a sense of purpose, I set off to the Museo del Ámbar, housed in the former Convent of La Merced. As a history enthusiast, I was immediately captivated by the building's rich past, having served as a convent, military barracks, and even a prison. The amber museum was inaugurated on December 4, 2000. Inside, the museum showcased a stunning collection of amber, Chiapas's most characteristic gem. I learned about the fossilized resin's history and its significance in Mesoamerican cultures, used for medicinal purposes, amulets, jewelry, and art objects. The amber is extracted through mines carved into the mountains. The museum has around 300 to 350 pieces. I was particularly fascinated by the pieces with inclusions—ancient insects and plant matter trapped within the golden stone. It was like holding a tiny window into the past. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday.

The beauty of travel lies not only in seeing new places but in discovering new perspectives.

Next on my list was the Museo Mesoamericano del Jade. Jade, a stone of immense value to the ancient peoples of Mesoamerica, symbolized immortality, eternity, power, and love. As I wandered through the museum's exhibits, I admired the intricate jade artifacts from various cultures, including the Mocaya, Olmec, Teotihuacan, Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya, Toltec, and Aztec. The jade is sourced from the mountains of Chalchihuitan. The skill and artistry displayed in each piece were truly remarkable, and I felt a deep connection to the past as I contemplated the stories behind these objects. The museum is part of Casa de Jade.

For lunch, I ventured to BELIL SABORES DE CHIAPAS, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Chiapan cuisine. I decided to try one of the local specialties, *sopa de pan*, a traditional bread soup. It was a comforting and flavorful dish that warmed me from the inside out. The restaurant itself was charming, with colorful decorations and a lively atmosphere. I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff and learning more about the local ingredients and cooking techniques.

In the afternoon, I dedicated some time to shopping for souvenirs and immersing myself in the local artisan culture. I visited Artesanías Kuxul de Chiapas, a shop known for its beautiful handmade textiles and crafts. I was mesmerized by the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the traditional clothing and accessories. I ended up purchasing a few small items as gifts for my family and friends back in Berlin, knowing they would appreciate the unique beauty and craftsmanship of these pieces.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Cocoliche for dinner. This restaurant was recommended for its fusion of Thai, Italian, and Argentinian cuisines. I decided to try the pasta, which was delicious. The restaurant had a lively vibe, with live music and a mix of locals and tourists. It was the perfect place to unwind after a busy day of exploring. I went in the middle of the afternoon and the restaurant was busy. The prices are very reasonable.

To cap off my first day, I decided to check out Clover Irish Pub. While an Irish pub might seem out of place in San Cristobal, I was curious to see how it blended with the local culture. The pub had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, with a good selection of beers and live music. I enjoyed chatting with some of the other patrons, who were a mix of locals and expats. It was a fun and relaxed way to end the evening, and I felt a sense of camaraderie with my fellow travelers. Multiple television screens cater to sports fans. I enjoyed a variety of beverages.

As I walked back to my hotel, I reflected on all that I had experienced on my first day in San Cristobal. From the fascinating museums to the delicious food and the friendly people, this city had already captured my heart. I was excited to see what tomorrow would bring, with plans to visit Casa Na Bolom and the Reserva Ecológica y Jardín de Orquídeas Moxviquil. I know I will need my portable charger for tomorrow to keep my camera going! I drifted off to sleep with a smile on my face, grateful for the opportunity to explore this magical place.

San Cristobal de las Casas is located 7000 ft in the heart of the highlands of Chiapas. There are many events in San Cristobal de las Casas. I am looking forward to the rest of my trip!
