Subterranean Wonders and Ancient Roads

Today's adventure was a fascinating blend of natural marvels and historical echoes. Leaving the tranquil embrace of Serra de São Mamede Natural Park for a day trip, I journeyed to explore the depths of Mira de Aire Cave and trace the ancient path of Estrada Romana do Alqueidão da Serra. It’s amazing how much history and natural beauty can be packed into a single day.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Berangas Timur. It was a quaint little spot, and I enjoyed a traditional Portuguese pastry with a strong coffee, fueling up for the day’s explorations. The cafe was bustling with locals, a sure sign of its authenticity and charm. It reminded me of the small cafes Hans and I used to frequent in Berlin, a comforting start to the day.

First on the agenda was the Mira de Aire Cave. As I descended into the earth, a cool, damp air enveloped me, a stark contrast to the warm July sun outside. The sheer scale of the cave was breathtaking. Stalactites and stalagmites formed intricate patterns, sculpted over millennia by the patient hand of nature. The guide shared fascinating insights into the cave's geology, explaining how these formations grew, drop by drop, over countless years.

The lighting within the cave was artfully done, highlighting the natural beauty of the rock formations without feeling artificial. There were moments when I felt like I was in an underground cathedral, the silence broken only by the soft echo of dripping water. It was an experience that truly connected me to the earth, a reminder of the immense power and patience of nature.

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

After emerging from the depths of Mira de Aire, blinking in the sunlight, I made my way to Estrada Romana do Alqueidão da Serra. This ancient Roman road, built between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, offered a tangible link to Portugal's rich history. As I walked along the well-preserved stones, I imagined Roman soldiers marching along this very path, their footsteps echoing through the centuries.

The road itself is a testament to Roman engineering, a durable and practical route that has stood the test of time. It was likely used to transport iron ore extracted from nearby mines, connecting the region to the wider Roman world. Standing there, I felt a profound connection to the past, a sense of continuity that transcended the ages. I pictured Sophie, my daughter, running along this path, her imagination ignited by the stories of Roman legions and ancient civilizations.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Restaurante Duarte in Alqueidão da Serra. I savored traditional Portuguese dishes, the flavors rich and comforting. The restaurant had a cozy, family-run atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I tried a local specialty, a hearty stew made with regional ingredients, and it was absolutely delicious. It reminded me of the comforting meals Hans cooks for us in Berlin, a taste of home away from home.

In the late afternoon, after a day filled with subterranean wonders and historical paths, I decided to have dinner at Restaurante Clube Alentejo - Vocacionado para grupos. It was a cozy place and I enjoyed a traditional Portuguese meal, savoring the rich flavors of the local cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with locals, creating a lively and convivial atmosphere. It was a perfect way to reflect on the day’s adventures, surrounded by the warmth and energy of the community.

As the sun began to set, I found myself at Sem Stress, a local bar, enjoying a glass of Portuguese wine. The bar was small and intimate, with a relaxed and friendly vibe. I chatted with some of the locals, sharing stories and laughter. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration, a moment of connection and camaraderie.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had learned and experienced. From the depths of the Mira de Aire Cave to the ancient stones of Estrada Romana, I had journeyed through time and space, connecting with Portugal's natural beauty and rich history. It was a day that nourished my soul and deepened my appreciation for the wonders of the world.

Tomorrow, I'm heading to Serra da Estrela Nature Park and Torre Medieval da Portagem. I am looking forward to more discoveries and adventures.

My thoughts drift to Hans and Sophie back in Berlin. I know they would have loved exploring the cave and walking along the Roman road with me. I can almost hear Sophie's excited chatter as she imagines herself as a Roman princess, and Hans's insightful commentary on the engineering marvels of the ancient road. I miss them dearly, but I also cherish these moments of solo exploration, a chance to reconnect with myself and the world around me.

This trip is not just a break from teaching English at the Volkshochschule; it’s a chance to recharge, reflect, and gather new stories to share with my students and, of course, with Hans and Sophie when I return. As I sip my wine, I make a mental note to research more about the Roman influence in Portugal, eager to share my newfound knowledge with my students. After all, travel is not just about seeing new places; it’s about expanding our understanding of the world and our place in it.

As I prepare for tomorrow’s adventure, I feel a sense of gratitude for this opportunity to explore the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park and its surroundings. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of our busy lives, there is always time to seek out new experiences, to learn, and to connect with the world around us. And who knows what wonders tomorrow will bring?
