Farewell, Blue Pearl!

As my week-long adventure in Chefchaouen draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I’ve had in this mesmerizing blue city. From wandering through its labyrinthine streets to immersing myself in the local culture, every moment has been a feast for the senses. Today, I decided to make the most of my last day by embarking on a challenging hike and soaking in the panoramic views that Chefchaouen has to offer.

My final day in Chefchaouen started early, fueled by excitement and a hint of sadness that my time in this magical place was coming to an end. After a quick breakfast at مطعم داركم (مطعم داركم), a local spot known for its traditional Moroccan fare, I met up with my friends, ready to tackle the Jebel El-Kelaa Summit.

Conquering Jebel El-Kelaa

The hike to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit is no joke. I'd rate it as moderately difficult. It took us about three hours to ascend, but every step was worth it. The trail began with a gentle incline, a perfect warm-up before the steeper sections. As we climbed, the views became increasingly breathtaking, with the blue hues of Chefchaouen contrasting against the rugged mountain terrain. The air was filled with the scents of aromatic herbs, and we even spotted some local wildlife along the way. I made sure to pack plenty of water and snacks, heeding the advice I'd read – there are no shops along the trail.

About three hours into the hike, the trail became very rugged, with many rocks strewn across the path. There was some scrambling over large boulders, as well as up loose gravel, before reaching the peak. Proper hiking boots were definitely a must. As we neared the summit, the paths were well-marked, making it manageable even for casual hikers.

Reaching the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views were simply stunning. From up there, Chefchaouen looked like a dreamy watercolor painting, nestled amidst the Rif Mountains. We spent a good hour at the top, taking photos and simply soaking in the beauty. I felt a sense of accomplishment, knowing I had conquered this challenging yet rewarding trek.

The descent offered fresh perspectives of the region, and we even encountered some friendly locals along the way. The whole experience was a perfect blend of effort, challenge, and natural beauty.

A Moment with the Hero Eagle

After our hike, we decided to visit the Hero Eagle, another must-see spot in Chefchaouen. The path to the viewpoint was lined with local flora, offering glimpses of traditional Moroccan life. It was a great opportunity to capture some captivating photos.

Reaching the Hero Eagle, we were rewarded with even more breathtaking panoramic views. The vantage point offered a unique perspective of Chefchaouen, encapsulating the spirit of this charming town. I could see the entire blue city spread out before me, with the Rif Mountains providing a stunning backdrop. I learned that the Hero Eagle is particularly popular during sunrise and sunset, and I could see why. The soft hues of the sky would definitely complement the blue of Chefchaouen, creating a magical atmosphere.

Lunch at Restaurant Bab Souk

By now, we were famished, so we headed to Restaurant Bab Souk for lunch. This spot is conveniently located near one of the old city gates. I had read some great reviews, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The restaurant offers a variety of Moroccan cuisine, and I decided to try their soup, which was perfectly cooked and comforting. The atmosphere was cozy, and we enjoyed the outdoor seating with a beautiful view. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our morning adventures.

A Farewell Dinner at Sofia

For my final dinner in Chefchaouen, we chose Sofia, a restaurant recommended for its authentic home-style cooking. Tucked away behind the main street of the medina, it was a welcome escape from the bustling tourist crowds. The ladies running the restaurant were incredibly kind and welcoming. I opted for the couscous with seven vegetables, topped with caramelized onions and sultanas – it was absolutely delicious. The setting was simple and laid-back, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed and informal meal. It was the perfect way to savor my last moments in Chefchaouen.

A Final Toast at Bar Oum Rabie

To end the day, we decided to visit Bar Oum Rabie for a final toast to our Moroccan adventure. This charming bar and grill is known for its vibrant atmosphere and impressive selection of wines. It's also one of the few places in town that serves beer and wine, making it a unique spot for tourists looking to unwind. The staff was friendly, and the music added to the lively ambiance. We enjoyed some local wines, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the trip. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to Chefchaouen.

Reflections and Goodbyes

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had in Chefchaouen. This blue city has captured my heart with its stunning beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality. I've learned so much about Moroccan history, traditions, and cuisine, and I'm already planning my next visit. Although I didn't forget my sunglasses this time, I definitely need a power adapter for my next trip to Morocco.

Chefchaouen is more than just a pretty place; it's a place where you can truly immerse yourself in a different way of life. Whether you're hiking in the mountains, exploring the medina, or simply enjoying a cup of mint tea at a local café, you're sure to create memories that will last a lifetime. I’m so glad I decided to spend my week here with my friends.

Tomorrow, we head back to Tangier to catch our flight back to Berlin. It’s always bittersweet leaving a place you’ve fallen in love with, but I know I’ll carry the memories of Chefchaouen with me always. Until next time, Blue Pearl!

Before I close, I wanted to reflect on why Chefchaouen is blue. Some believe that it was the Jewish refugees fleeing persecution who started the wall painting craze. They say that the blue walls remind them of the sky and the presence of God. Others say that the walls represent the Ras el-Maa Waterfall, which provides the city with its drinking water. Whatever the reason, the blue walls add to the beauty of the city.
