Day 5: Cliffside Views and Ancient Echoes: Discovering Ronda's Soul
Uncover Ronda Valley's charm with a day of breathtaking viewpoints, historic palaces, and culinary delights. A Spanish adventure awaits!
Ronda's Timeless Allure
Today, Hans and I truly immersed ourselves in the heart of Ronda, a city that effortlessly blends natural beauty with centuries of history. It was a day of exploration, delicious food, and moments that made me feel incredibly connected to this enchanting place. I'm so excited to share our experiences with you all!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Flores El Decano de Ronda 1919. It felt like stepping back in time, as this restaurant has been a local favorite since, well, 1919! We enjoyed traditional Spanish pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to start our exploration of Ronda, feeling grounded and ready to embrace the day.
With our appetites sated, we set off to Ronda Best Viewpoint. The anticipation was palpable as we approached, and it did not disappoint! The panoramic vista of the El Tajo gorge was simply breathtaking. The sheer drop of the cliffs, combined with the lush greenery below, created a dramatic and unforgettable scene. I snapped countless photos, trying to capture the essence of the view, but no image could truly do it justice. Hans and I just stood there for a while, hand in hand, soaking it all in. It’s moments like these that remind me why we love to travel – to witness the world's most incredible sights together.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments, like standing in awe before a breathtaking view.
Next on our list was the Mondragon Palace, also known as Palacio del Marqués de Villasierra, a place steeped in history. This palace has been home to Moorish kings, Christian monarchs, and noble families throughout the centuries. As we wandered through the palace's courtyards and halls, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the past. The architecture was stunning, with intricate tilework, Mudejar ceilings, and beautiful gardens. The water gardens, though partially modernized, reminded me of the Generalife in Granada, offering a tranquil escape with stunning views.

I learned that the palace also houses the Municipal Museum, showcasing artifacts from Ronda's rich history, from the Stone Age to the present day. While the English translations were a bit quirky, it added to the charm of the experience. I was particularly fascinated by the stories of King Abomelic, who brought a golden age to Ronda in the 14th century. Hans, ever the history enthusiast, was captivated by the palace's role in the Christian reconquest of Spain.
After immersing ourselves in history, our stomachs began to rumble, signaling it was time for lunch. We headed to Restaurante Tropicana, known for its modern decor, comfortable ambiance and highly-rated Spanish dishes. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to sample the cuisine. We started with a refreshing ensalada tropicana, which included tropical fruit and ice cream! For the main course, Hans chose the pulpo (octopus), while I opted for conejo (rabbit), a dish I rarely see on menus these days. Both were delicious, and we shared a slice of tarta de zanahoria (carrot cake) for dessert. The service was impeccable, and we left feeling satisfied and ready for more exploration.

With renewed energy, we made our way to the Puente Romano, also known as the Puente Arabe, an ancient bridge with a fascinating history. The bridge's base dates back to Roman times, while the upper portions were rebuilt during the Moorish rule. As we walked across the bridge, I imagined travelers from centuries past making their way into the city. I learned that the bridge was once the main entrance to Ronda from the north, guarded by fortifications, a city gate, and a watchtower. It was amazing to think about all the people who had crossed this bridge throughout history. It was a truly humbling experience.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to find a place to relax and enjoy a drink. Drinks&co. caught our eye with its cozy atmosphere and impressive selection of beverages. We settled into a comfortable corner and ordered local beers. The bar had a lively vibe, with people chatting and laughing. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Hans and I chatted about our favorite moments, made plans for the rest of our trip, and simply enjoyed each other's company.

For our final culinary experience of the day, we chose Restaurante Panorámico for dinner. As the name suggests, the restaurant offered panoramic views of Ronda, including the Plaza de Toros. We arrived just as the sun was beginning to set, casting a warm glow over the city. The ambiance was romantic and inviting. We savored Mediterranean dishes, including the highly recommended toro. The food was delicious, the service was attentive, and the views were simply unforgettable. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Mirador de Aldehuela, Casa del Gigante and Paseo De Los Ingleses. I'm particularly excited about visiting the Casa del Gigante, as I've heard it's a fascinating example of Moorish architecture. And of course, I'm always up for a stroll along a scenic promenade, so the Paseo De Los Ingleses is right up my alley. Before heading to our next destinations, we will have breakfast at Restaurante La Casapuerta and lunch at Venta La Higuera. For dinner, we are planning to have dinner at El Morabito, and will also be visiting ArtesamArt shop.
