Tilcara's Treasures: A Day of Discovery
Today was all about embracing the raw beauty and dramatic landscapes that Tilcara has to offer. I set out to explore some of the region's most stunning natural attractions, and let me tell you, it was a day filled with breathtaking views, a touch of adventure, and a whole lot of awe. I'm excited to share my experiences as I continue to explore the wonders of Argentina.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at A La Payla Restaurant. The restaurant is located on the main square, making it easy to find, and I was eager to try some local flavors before heading out for my adventures. I opted for the tortilla de quinoa, which was delicious and filling. The restaurant had a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere and I enjoyed listening to some traditional music while I ate.

Fueled up and ready to go, I set off towards the Garganta del Diablo, or Devil's Throat, a renowned natural wonder just outside of Tilcara. Finding the start of the trail was a bit of a challenge, but with a little help from some friendly locals, I was soon on my way. The hike itself was moderately challenging, taking me about 1.5 hours to ascend. The path wound through a landscape dotted with cacti and hardy bushes, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The air was thin, a reminder of Tilcara's altitude of 2,465 meters above sea level, but I took my time, enjoying the scenery and trying to acclimatize. I made sure to bring my reusable water bottle and stayed hydrated throughout the walk.

As I climbed higher, the views became increasingly dramatic. The towering rock walls of the canyon rose on either side, carved by the Huasamayo River over centuries. Finally, I reached the entrance to the Garganta del Diablo, where I paid a small fee to enter. A short descent led me to a sign pointing towards the mirador (lookout) and the cascada (waterfall). I chose to head to the mirador first, and I was rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the canyon below.
Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are the ones that challenge us, leading to discoveries we never anticipated.
Next, I followed the path to the waterfall, a 20-meter cascade tumbling down the rock face. The sound of the water was refreshing, and I took some time to admire the natural beauty of the falls. The whole area reminded me a bit of Arizona, with cacti everywhere and that amazing desert vibe. I spent some time taking pictures and soaking in the atmosphere before starting my descent.
Back in Tilcara, I grabbed lunch at Los Puestos Restaurante. This place had a more casual feel, and I decided to try some grilled meat. I had a tasty chorizo and enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the restaurant. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable, making it a great spot for a midday meal.

After lunch, I decided to explore El Mirador de Tilcara, another viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of the region. This was a shorter, easier walk from the town center, and the views were well worth the effort. From the mirador, I could see the Pucará de Tilcara, the pre-Inca fortress I plan to visit tomorrow, as well as the surrounding mountains and valleys. The landscape was bathed in the warm afternoon light, creating a truly magical scene. I took some time to simply sit and appreciate the beauty of the Andes.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to SARA-SISA Bar Café Cervecería for a pre-dinner drink. This bar had a great vibe, with a friendly owner who was passionate about craft beers. I sampled a few local brews, chatting with other travelers and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking and exploring.

For dinner, I chose Chicha Libre Resto Bar, drawn in by its rooftop terrace and the promise of vegan options. I started with lentil empanadas, followed by a hearty squash soup. The food was delicious, the staff was friendly, and the rooftop terrace offered a lovely view of the town. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I took a stroll through the quiet streets of Tilcara, soaking in the atmosphere and reflecting on the day's experiences. The air was cool and crisp, and the stars were beginning to appear in the night sky. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this unique corner of Argentina and excited for what tomorrow would bring.
Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into Tilcara's history and culture with a visit to the Museo Irureta and the Altura Botanical Garden. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Hilandería Warmi - Tilcara, a local shop specializing in handwoven textiles.
Tilcara is a small town, and it is possible that there might be some altitude sickness, so I will try to take it easy. I also plan to bring sunscreen to protect myself from the sun.
I'm really enjoying my solo adventure here in Tilcara, and I can't wait to share more of my experiences with you all. Stay tuned for more updates from the road!
