First Impressions of Tilcara
Today marked the beginning of my solo adventure in Tilcara, Argentina, and what a start it has been! From the moment I stepped off the bus, I was enveloped in the charm of this Andean town. The air is crisp, the sun is warm, and the vibrant colors of the landscape are simply breathtaking. I'm eager to share my first day's experiences, exploring ancient ruins, immersing myself in local culture, and indulging in the region's culinary delights.

My journey from Berlin to Tilcara was long, but definitely worth it. After flying into Buenos Aires and then taking a domestic flight to Jujuy, the final bus ride to Tilcara offered stunning views of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. I already feel so inspired, and I can’t wait to see what the next nine days will bring. I'm particularly excited about capturing the essence of sustainable travel in this unique corner of the world.

First thing's first: breakfast! I headed to Kusikanky, a local favorite known for its affordable and delicious food. I opted for a traditional breakfast of mate cocido (coca tea) and some freshly baked bread. It was the perfect way to start the day, fueling me up for a morning of exploration.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I made my way to Pucará de Tilcara, an ancient pre-Inca fortification perched on a hilltop just outside of town. The hike up was a bit challenging, but the panoramic views of the Humahuaca Ravine were more than worth the effort. It was easy to see why this location was strategically chosen centuries ago. The Pucará, now a National Monument, dates back to the 10th century AD and offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people who once called this place home. Wandering through the partially rebuilt stone structures, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity and resilience of these ancient communities. It was incredible to imagine what life must have been like here so many years ago.

Sometimes, the most enriching experiences are found in the simple act of connecting with the past, feeling the echoes of history beneath your feet.

After soaking in the history at Pucará de Tilcara, I descended back into town and visited the Museo Arqueológico Eduardo Casanova. This museum houses a remarkable collection of artifacts unearthed at the Pucará, providing further insights into the region's rich cultural heritage. From pottery shards and ancient tools to skeletal remains and religious artifacts, each exhibit told a story of life in pre-Columbian times. I was particularly fascinated by the displays showcasing the Inca influence on the region, a testament to the cross-cultural exchange that occurred here centuries ago.

Following my museum visit, I took a leisurely stroll through Plaza Cnel. Manuel Álvarez Prado, the heart of Tilcara. The plaza was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike mingling amidst the shade of towering trees. I sat on a bench, watching children play and vendors sell their wares, soaking in the lively atmosphere of this charming Andean town. It was the perfect spot to simply relax and observe the rhythm of daily life in Tilcara.

By now, my stomach was starting to rumble again, so I decided to treat myself to lunch at Restaurant El Patio. This cozy spot, just a few steps from the central plaza, is known for its healthy and authentic Argentine cuisine. The menu changes daily, based on fresh, local ingredients, which is something I really appreciate. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such delicious and authentic flavors.

In the late afternoon, I indulged in a bit of shopping at the Paseo Artesanal De Pucará. This artisan market is a treasure trove of local crafts, from colorful textiles and ceramics to hand-carved wooden figurines. I picked up a few souvenirs for Hans and myself, eager to bring a piece of Tilcara back home to Berlin. I found a beautiful hand-woven scarf with traditional Andean patterns, perfect for the Berlin winter. I also got a small, quirky llama figurine that will look great on my desk, reminding me of this amazing trip.

As evening approached, I made my way to La Picadita for dinner. This restaurant is famous for its traditional Argentine dishes and cozy atmosphere. I decided to try the locro, a hearty stew made with beans, corn, potatoes, and meat – the perfect comfort food for a chilly Andean evening. The friendly staff and warm ambiance made me feel right at home, even though I was thousands of miles away from Berlin.

The weather today was quite pleasant, with highs around 22°C (72°F). The sun was shining, and there was a gentle breeze, making it ideal for exploring the town and its surroundings. However, I did notice that the wind picked up in the afternoon, so I was glad I had packed a light jacket. November in Tilcara seems to be a mix of sunshine and showers, so I'll be sure to pack accordingly for the rest of my trip.

As I reflect on my first day in Tilcara, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. This town is truly a hidden gem, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I'm so glad I decided to embark on this solo adventure, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, I'm planning to hike to the Garganta del Diablo and El Mirador de Tilcara, hoping to capture some more stunning views of the region. I might also check out SARA-SISA Bar Café Cervecería for a relaxing evening drink [see Itinerary of Tomorrow].

Even though I forgot my sunscreen and portable phone charger at home [see TripEssentialsForgotten], I managed to have a great first day. I'll definitely need to buy some sunscreen tomorrow!

Until then, ¡hasta mañana from Tilcara!
