A Day of Heights and History in Tilcara
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of physical challenge and historical immersion, all wrapped up in the vibrant tapestry of Tilcara. It's amazing how much a single day can offer, from panoramic views to poignant historical reflections. I’m continually reminded why I chose this solo adventure – the freedom to explore at my own pace and soak in every moment.
My day began with breakfast at Killa Resto Bar. I opted for something light, a local pastry and strong coffee, perfect for fueling up before my trek. Killa Resto Bar seems to be quite popular, offering a wide range of options from traditional Argentinian fare to pizzas and sandwiches. I made a mental note to perhaps return for dinner another evening.
Reaching for the Sky: Cumbre EL.CONO, TILCARA
The main objective for the morning was Cumbre El Cono. The locals had told me that the views from the summit were well worth the effort, and I was eager to see for myself. The ascent was definitely a climb, and I found myself grateful for my comfortable walking shoes. I also regretted forgetting my sunscreen; the sun here is intense, even in November. The trail wound its way up the mountainside, each step offering increasingly stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the occasional bird call and my own heavy breathing. As I climbed, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey so far. Tilcara has a special charm, a blend of indigenous culture and colonial history that's both captivating and thought-provoking.
Reaching the summit of Cumbre El Cono was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views were breathtaking – a sea of rolling hills painted in hues of red, brown, and green, stretching as far as the eye could see. The town of Tilcara looked like a miniature village from above, its white-washed buildings nestled snugly in the valley. I spent a good hour at the top, simply absorbing the beauty and tranquility. I took dozens of photos, trying to capture the essence of the landscape, but no image could truly do it justice. It's one of those places you have to experience firsthand to fully appreciate.

A Sombering Visit: Casa Historica donde se veló al Gral. Lavallle
After descending from Cumbre El Cono, I decided to spend the afternoon delving into Tilcara’s history. My destination was the Casa Histórica donde se veló al Gral. Lavalle. This historical house, where General Juan Lavalle was laid in state, now serves as a museum. It's a place of great historical significance, offering a glimpse into Argentina's turbulent past. The house itself is a beautiful example of colonial architecture, with thick adobe walls, a courtyard, and a sense of quiet reverence.
Stepping inside, I was immediately transported back in time. The museum houses a collection of artifacts related to General Lavalle's life and death, including letters, documents, and personal belongings. The displays told the story of a man who was a key figure in Argentina's struggle for independence, a soldier and politician who ultimately met a tragic end. I learned about his military campaigns, his political ideals, and the circumstances surrounding his assassination. The atmosphere in the house was heavy with history, a palpable sense of the events that had unfolded within those walls. It was a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for Argentina's freedom. It was in 1841 that the General was laid to rest here, as his people brought him through Tilcara on a funeral cortege towards Bolivia.
As I wandered through the rooms, I couldn't help but reflect on the parallels between the past and the present. The struggles for freedom and justice continue to this day, in different forms and in different parts of the world. It's important to remember the lessons of history, to learn from the mistakes of the past, and to strive for a better future. I was particularly moved by the story of the local community's efforts to preserve the house and its history. It's a testament to the importance of remembering the past and honoring those who came before us. Before leaving I purchased a small book about the history of the house. I plan to read it this evening.

A Taste of Local Flavors: Lunch and Dinner
For lunch, I stopped at La Chakana Parrilla, enticed by the promise of regional cuisine. The restaurant's name, referring to the Andean cross, perfectly reflects its mission to connect diners with the essence of the region. I decided to try the estofado de llama with Andean gnocchi, a dish recommended by several other travelers. The llama stew was rich and flavorful, the meat tender and succulent. The Andean gnocchi were a delightful accompaniment, adding a unique twist to the traditional Italian dish. The service was friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. It was the perfect spot to recharge after a morning of hiking and history. The restaurant’s rustic decor added to the experience, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Dinner was at PARRILLADA LA TILCAREÑA. I wanted something simple and comforting after a long day. I opted for a grilled steak with a side salad. The steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and flavorful. The salad was fresh and crisp, a refreshing counterpoint to the richness of the meat. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with exploration and discovery. I savored every bite, enjoying the peaceful ambiance of the restaurant and the sounds of the town winding down for the night. I was so tired after my busy day that I went straight back to my accommodation and fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.

A Touch of Local Craftsmanship: La Jabonera Tilcara
Before heading back, I took a little time to explore the local shops. I stumbled upon La Jabonera Tilcara, a charming little store that sells handmade soaps and other bath products. The shop was filled with the aroma of natural ingredients – lavender, rosemary, and eucalyptus. I chatted with the owner, a friendly woman who told me about her passion for creating natural and sustainable products. I ended up buying a few bars of soap as souvenirs for my friends and family back home. It's always nice to support local artisans and bring back something unique from my travels. I was particularly drawn to a soap made with coca leaves, a traditional ingredient in the Andes. I’m excited to try it out and experience its revitalizing properties.
