Finding Serenity in Kyoto's Temples

Today was a deep dive into the spiritual heart of Kyoto, a day spent wandering through temples that each offered a unique perspective on history, art, and the pursuit of inner peace. It's incredible how much these ancient sites can still resonate with a modern soul, offering a place to pause and reflect amidst the vibrant chaos of travel.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Fujiya. I enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast, fueling up with grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. Pieter opted for a more western-style breakfast, but also loved the Japanese pickles.

Our first stop was Ryoan-ji, the site of Japan's most famous rock garden. As we approached, I could feel the anticipation building. The garden itself is deceptively simple: a rectangle of raked white gravel punctuated by fifteen rocks, each carefully placed. The mystery surrounding its creation only adds to its allure.

As I sat on the veranda with Pieter, contemplating the arrangement, I couldn't help but feel a sense of calm wash over me. The beauty of the garden lies in its ambiguity. It invites you to project your own meaning onto it. Is it islands in a sea? A tiger carrying cubs? Or something more abstract, a representation of infinity itself? I think, for me, it was a reminder to find stillness in the midst of chaos, to appreciate the beauty of simplicity. We walked around the Kyoyochi Pond, which was originally part of the Fujiwara estate in the 11th century, before heading to our next location.

The beauty of simplicity invites a deeper contemplation, revealing the profound in the understated.

Next on our list was Ninna-ji Temple. Founded in 888 by Emperor Uda, Ninna-ji has a rich imperial history. It served as a residence for emperors who later became priests. The temple complex is vast, with a five-story pagoda, elegant halls, and serene gardens. The Omuro cherry trees, known for their late-blooming blossoms, were just beginning to show their colors, promising a spectacular sight in the days to come. I had forgotten to pack my travel adapter, but luckily Pieter had one with him.

The temple buildings were burnt down in 1468 during the Onin War, but were rebuilt in the early 17th century with the assistance of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The temple's reconstruction was completed in 1646. The buildings at Ninna-ji include the Kondo, a National Treasure, and the Miedo, an Important Cultural Property. Other Important Cultural Properties include the Niomon (a gate with Buddhist statues on either side) and a five-story pagoda. We took our time wandering through the halls, admiring the artwork and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was easy to imagine emperors of old strolling through these very gardens, seeking solace from the burdens of their rule.

For lunch, we headed to Tategami, a restaurant specializing in Kyo-ryori, traditional Kyoto cuisine. The multi-course meal was a feast for the senses, each dish a tiny work of art. From the delicate sashimi to the flavorful simmered vegetables, every bite was a celebration of local ingredients and culinary artistry. Pieter and I enjoyed the calm atmosphere of the restaurant.

Our final temple of the day was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. There is truly something magical about this place. The top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf, shimmering in the sunlight. Originally built as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in the late 14th century, it was later converted into a Zen temple. The reflection of the pavilion in the surrounding pond is breathtaking, creating a scene that feels straight out of a fairy tale.

Kinkaku-ji has burned down numerous times throughout its history including twice during the Onin War, a civil war that destroyed much of Kyoto; and once again more recently in 1950 when it was set on fire by a fanatic monk. The present structure was rebuilt in 1955. Each floor has a different architectural style. The first floor is built in the Shinden style used for palace buildings during the Heian Period, and with its natural wood pillars and white plaster walls contrasts yet complements the gilded upper stories of the pavilion. Statues of the Shaka Buddha (historical Buddha) and Yoshimitsu are stored in the first floor.

While the crowds were a bit overwhelming, the sheer beauty of the Golden Pavilion made it all worthwhile. It's a testament to the enduring power of art and architecture to inspire awe and wonder.

Before dinner, we took some time to explore Shijo Kawaramachi. The area is known for its mix of modern shops and traditional stores. I found a lovely silk scarf as a souvenir, while Pieter picked up some local snacks. It was fun to wander through the bustling streets, soaking in the energy of the city. I was able to find a travel adapter, which I had forgotten to pack. The area is home to department stores, shopping districts, and drug stores located all in one place, making it a very convenient location to use as the starting point for sightseeing adventures.

For dinner, we had reservations at Premium Pound Gion, a teppanyaki restaurant known for its high-quality Japanese beef. The restaurant is located in the hidden place inside of Gion area. The restaurant has a Kyoto-style calm external appearance and interior, that can be enjoyed by adults. The chef prepared each course with precision and flair, the sizzle of the meat on the grill filling the air with anticipation. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. It was the perfect ending to a day of cultural immersion and culinary delights. I had heard that the staff speaks fluent Spanish, as well as English, but we spoke to them in English.

As I reflect on the day, I'm struck by the diversity of experiences that Kyoto offers. From the tranquil Zen garden to the opulent Golden Pavilion, each site has its own unique charm and story to tell. And in between, there's the vibrant energy of the city, the delicious food, and the warmth of the people.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, Honen-in Temple, and Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion). I'm excited to see what other treasures this city holds in store. We might even check out Bar K6 for a nightcap.

I'm so grateful for these moments of discovery, for the chance to explore new cultures and connect with the past. And I'm especially grateful to be sharing this journey with Pieter, my partner in life and adventure.
