Join Jiří and Lena as they discover the historical gateway of Moulay Ismaïl and the spiritual town of Zerhoun in Morocco's Moulay Idriss Region.
A Day of Discovery in the Moulay Idriss Region
Today was a day of venturing deeper into the heart of Morocco's spiritual and historical landscape. Lena and I set out to explore the wonders of the Moulay Idriss Region, visiting the impressive gateway of Moulay Ismaïl and immersing ourselves in the sacred town of Zerhoun. It's days like these that remind me why we travel – to connect with the past, embrace new cultures, and create lasting memories.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Roman City. Fuelled up with traditional Moroccan fare, we were ready to explore. The anticipation was palpable as we set off to see Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl باب مولاي إسماعيل, a majestic gateway that stands as a testament to Morocco's rich history. Commissioned by Sultan Moulay Ismaïl in the 17th century, this monumental entrance is part of the historic city walls of Meknes. As we approached, the intricate tile work and elegant arches immediately captured our attention. The portal's grandeur offered a glimpse into the opulence of the sultanate era, a perfect backdrop for photographs and an essential stop for history enthusiasts like myself.

It’s fascinating how architecture can tell such vivid stories. The blend of Islamic and Baroque influences in the gateway's design showcased the artistic prowess of the craftsmen of that time. Lena, with her keen eye for detail as a graphic designer, was particularly impressed by the ornate decorations and vivid tiles. We spent a good hour simply admiring the structure, imagining the bustling life that once flowed through this gateway. The surrounding area was vibrant with local life, offering a glimpse into the daily activities of residents.
After soaking in the historical ambiance of the gateway, we drove towards Zerhoun, the mountain town that holds a special place in Moroccan history. As we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The town itself is nestled on the slopes of Mount Zerhoun, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape.

Travel isn't always pretty. It isn't always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that's okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks upon your memory, upon your consciousness, upon your heart, and upon your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.
Zerhoun is famous for being the site of the tomb of Idris I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty, after whom the town is named. Idris I, a descendant of Muhammad, fled from Abbasid-controlled territory and established himself at Volubilis, forging alliances with local Berber tribes. His leadership and religious influence laid the foundation for the Idrisid dynasty, making Zerhoun a significant spiritual center.
Exploring Zerhoun felt like stepping back in time. The town exudes a sense of tranquility, with its narrow streets and whitewashed buildings. We wandered through the local market, where vendors sold everything from fresh produce to traditional handicrafts. The aroma of spices filled the air, and the sounds of bartering created a lively atmosphere. I picked up some locally produced olive oil, which is considered among the best in Morocco. Lena found a beautiful handwoven scarf, a perfect memento of our visit.
We stopped for lunch at Cafe Restaurant Ksar Pharaon, a charming spot with stunning views. Over tagine and mint tea, we reflected on the morning's adventures. It struck me how the history of this region is so deeply intertwined with the landscape itself. The mountains, the ancient ruins, the vibrant culture – it all comes together to create a unique and unforgettable experience.

In the afternoon, we continued our exploration of Zerhoun, visiting the mausoleum of Moulay Idris I. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mausoleum itself, we were able to appreciate its architectural beauty from the outside. The reverence the locals hold for this site was palpable, a testament to the enduring legacy of Moulay Idris I.
One of the most striking features of Zerhoun is the cylindrical minaret of the Sentissi Mosque, built in 1939. Its green mosaic tiles and inscriptions from the Qur'an make it a unique and modern addition to the town's skyline. We admired it from a distance, appreciating its blend of tradition and modernity.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to SCORPION HOUSE for a relaxing drink. Sitting on the terrace, we watched the sunset over the hills, casting a golden glow on the town. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with history, culture, and exploration.

For dinner, we indulged in a traditional Moroccan feast at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, and the food was simply divine. We savored every bite, reminiscing about our experiences throughout the day. It's moments like these that make traveling with Lena so special. We share a passion for discovery and a deep appreciation for the cultures we encounter.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit Dar El-Makhzen and explore more of Meknes. I am particularly excited to see Dar El-Makhzen, as it offers further insights into Morocco's royal history. We also intend to do some shopping at زيارة باب مولاي إدريس.
Today was a reminder of the power of travel to broaden our perspectives and deepen our understanding of the world. The Moulay Idriss Region is a treasure trove of history and culture, and I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to experience it with Lena. As we continue our journey through Morocco, I am excited to see what other wonders await us.
I am also reminded that I forgot my portable charger and travel guidebook. I will need to remember those for the next trip. I am sure Lena will remind me anyway!
I am looking forward to continuing our journey together, side by side, as we continue to explore Morocco. The experiences we share strengthen our bond and create memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. As we prepare for another day of adventure, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful country with my beloved Lena.
Tomorrow promises new adventures as we delve deeper into the historical and cultural riches of Meknes. I am eager to explore Dar El-Makhzen and uncover more of Morocco's captivating past. Each day brings new discoveries, and I am excited to share these experiences with you all. Until then, good night from Morocco!
