Day 9: A Day of Serenity and Culinary Delights in Kyoto
Discover Kyoto's tranquil temples, beautiful parks, and exquisite cuisine on a solo journey through the heart of Japanese culture.
Kyoto's Gentle Embrace
Today in Kyoto was a symphony of serene landscapes and culinary masterpieces. As I continue my solo journey through this captivating city, I find myself increasingly drawn to the harmonious blend of nature and culture that defines Kyoto's essence. Each step unveils a new layer of beauty, a deeper appreciation for the traditions that have shaped this enchanting place.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Chapter Kyoto, a Tribute Portfolio™ Hotel. Fuelling up for the day ahead, I savoured the familiar comforts of the hotel's onsite restaurant, knowing a day of exploration awaited me. With the sun shining, I set off to uncover more of Kyoto's treasures.

My first stop was Kodaiji Temple. The temple was founded in 1606 by Kita-no-Mandokoro, who wanted to commemorate her deceased husband, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The architecture was stunning, and the Zen gardens offered a tranquil space for reflection. I took my time wandering through the grounds, admiring the intricate details of the buildings and the peaceful arrangement of the gardens. The air was crisp, and the scent of pine filled my senses, creating an atmosphere of profound serenity.

I learned that Kodaiji Temple is known for its weeping cherry blossoms, and I was fortunate enough to catch the beginning of the Spring Special Exhibition. The early blooms added a touch of magic to the already enchanting scenery. I can see why it’s a favourite spot for many visitors. The illuminations at night must be breathtaking, with the pale pink blossoms softly lit against the dark sky.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its famous landmarks, but in the quiet moments of reflection found in its serene gardens and temples.
Next on my itinerary was Maruyama Park, Kyoto's oldest public park. As I entered, I was immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere. Although the cherry blossoms were just beginning to bloom, the park was alive with anticipation. Families and couples strolled along the paths, and the air was filled with laughter and chatter. I found a quiet spot near a small pond and simply sat, soaking in the energy of the park. It was a perfect place to people-watch and enjoy the simple pleasures of a spring day.

I discovered that Maruyama Park is particularly famous for its weeping cherry tree, the Gion Shidarezakura. While it wasn't yet in full bloom, I could imagine how magnificent it would be in the coming days. The park is known for its evening illuminations during the cherry blossom season, and I made a mental note to return later in the week to witness this spectacle.
A short walk from Maruyama Park brought me to Yasaka Shrine, a vibrant and historically significant Shinto shrine. The shrine's bright vermillion gates stood out against the clear blue sky, inviting me to explore further. I learned that Yasaka Shrine is closely tied to the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's most famous festivals. Although the festival is held in July, the shrine's energy was palpable, hinting at the vibrant celebrations to come.

I wandered through the shrine grounds, admiring the intricate details of the architecture and the peaceful atmosphere. The shrine was surprisingly manageable, with little crowd, which allowed me to take my time and appreciate the surroundings. I made a small offering at the main hall, offering a silent prayer for continued safe travels and good fortune.
For lunch, I ventured to ryu no hige, a French restaurant that blends traditional Kyoto cuisine with a playful French twist. The restaurant is located a short walk from Shijo Station. I opted for one of their lunch courses, eager to experience their unique culinary approach. The service was impeccable, and the staff were attentive and friendly. Each dish was beautifully presented, showcasing seasonal ingredients and creative flavour combinations. It was a delightful culinary journey that perfectly captured the essence of Kyoto's gastronomic scene.

As evening approached, I prepared myself for a truly special dining experience at Kikunoi Roan. Known for its exquisite kaiseki cuisine, Kikunoi Roan promised an unforgettable culinary adventure. The restaurant is helmed by Chef Yoshiharu Murata, who carries on the spirit of his brother, seeking out new flavours using Western ingredients like truffles and olive oil.

The meal was a masterpiece of flavours and textures, each course carefully crafted to showcase the best of Kyoto's seasonal ingredients. From the delicate sashimi to the rich and savoury grilled fish, every dish was a delight to the senses. The attentive service and elegant atmosphere added to the overall experience, making it a truly memorable evening.
“Food has no borders” declares the creed of Kikunoi, and I could certainly taste that philosophy in every dish.
To cap off the day, I decided to explore Kyoto's nightlife with a visit to The Common One Bar Kyoto. Tucked away in the Gion district, this modern bar offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity. The bar features tatami rooms and a tea room, creating a serene and intimate atmosphere.

The entrance was a little hard to find, but that added to the bar's charm as a hidden gem. Inside, I was greeted by attentive bartenders who crafted creative cocktails with precision and care. I decided to try one of their signature drinks, a brandy-based cocktail with a refreshing blend of fruit flavours. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration, savouring the unique ambiance and the expertly crafted drink.
I learned that The Common One Bar is known for its attention to detail, from the selection of glassware to the shape of the ice cubes. The bartenders take pride in their craft, creating each cocktail as a work of art. It was a truly special experience, immersing myself in Kyoto's nightlife with a touch of elegance and sophistication.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's beauty and culture. From the tranquil temples to the vibrant parks and the exquisite cuisine, every moment has been a treasure. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Gion district further, visiting Hanamikoji Street and Gion Corner. I'm also looking forward to some shopping at Takashimaya Kyoto S.C. This solo journey continues to be a transformative experience, and I am eager to see what new wonders tomorrow will bring.
And now, as the day comes to a close, I raise a glass to new experiences and the beauty of solo travel. Until tomorrow, dear readers, may your own journeys be filled with discovery and delight. Lena would have loved this day, I can't wait to tell her all about it when I get home. I also need to remember to get a travel adapter and sunscreen when I return to Munich.
