Solo Exploration of Vietnam's Natural Wonders: Phong Nha-Ke Bang
Day 5: A Day of Caves and Culture: Exploring Phong Nha's Hidden Gems
Discover the wonders of Phong Nha with a trek to En Cave and Elephant Cave, savoring local flavors and vintage finds along the way.
Into the Heart of Phong Nha
Today was a symphony of subterranean exploration and authentic Vietnamese experiences. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Munich feels like a distant memory as I continue my solo journey through Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The day was ambitious, filled with cave trekking, local cuisine, and a touch of vintage charm. I’m continually amazed by the blend of adventure and culture that this region offers, and I'm eager to share the day’s highlights.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at The Villas Restaurant. Nestled amidst the stunning karst mountains and along the serene Son River, the setting was idyllic. I savored a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, fueling up for the day’s adventures. The fresh flavors and tranquil atmosphere were the perfect start to what promised to be an unforgettable day. I made a mental note to bring Lena here someday; she would adore the picturesque scenery and the delicious food.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to conquer the En Cave and Elephant Cave. The journey to En Cave was nothing short of spectacular. As I trekked through the lush landscapes of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, I was struck by the sheer beauty of the natural surroundings. The park, recently recognized at the World Travel Awards 2025, truly lives up to its reputation as a world-class eco-tourism destination.
The approach to En Cave was mesmerizing. The cave is home to thousands of swallows, and the high arched doors leading to Son Doong cave create a magical atmosphere. The scale of the underground space is simply breathtaking. I paused for a moment, reflecting on the wonders of nature and feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such beauty. I thought about my work back at the brewery in Munich, ensuring the quality of every batch of beer, and how different this world felt.

The earth has music for those who listen.
Next on the agenda was the Elephant Cave, and the trek there was an adventure in itself. The path led through dense jungle, requiring me to cross rivers and navigate slippery rocks. The humidity was intense, and I was grateful for my hiking boots and lightweight rain jacket, essentials I had wisely packed. I was kicking myself for forgetting mosquito repellent and sunscreen, though. I made a mental note to pick some up later.
Elephant Cave was a different experience altogether. The sheer size of the cave entrance was awe-inspiring, and as I ventured deeper, I was struck by the unique rock formations and the sense of history that permeated the air. Exploring the depths of the cave with a headlamp, I felt like a true adventurer, discovering hidden secrets in the heart of Vietnam.

After a morning of rigorous exploration, lunch at Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant was a welcome respite. This restaurant is known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine and vegan-friendly options. I savored the flavors of lemongrass tofu, a dish that perfectly captured the essence of Vietnamese cuisine. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made the experience even more enjoyable.
In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of local shopping. I visited Lá Store - Cho thuê đồ Boho/Vintage Phong Nha - Quảng Bình, a charming little shop known for its Boho and vintage clothing. The store was a treasure trove of unique finds, and I enjoyed browsing through the racks of colorful dresses and accessories. I ended up purchasing a beautiful vintage scarf, a perfect memento of my time in Phong Nha. Perhaps Lena would like it, I mused, picturing her wearing it on our next hiking trip in the Alps.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Son Doong Restaurant for dinner. Located near the Phong Nha tourist pier, the restaurant offered a wide range of Vietnamese dishes. While some reviews mentioned mixed experiences with the food quality, I decided to give it a try. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese meal, eager to taste the local flavors. The restaurant was bustling with activity, and I enjoyed soaking in the lively atmosphere. I found the food to be quite satisfying, although I can understand why some might have had different experiences.
Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. I had explored breathtaking caves, savored authentic Vietnamese cuisine, and even indulged in a bit of vintage shopping. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park had truly captured my heart, and I was already looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Bờ bắc sông Son - Phong Nha Kẻ Bàng, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Dubai Pub Phong Nha in the evening.
As I write this, back in my guesthouse, I realize that sustainable living isn't just a concept here; it's a way of life. The people of Phong Nha have a deep connection to their environment, and they are committed to preserving its natural beauty. This commitment resonates with me, and I am inspired to continue seeking out sustainable travel experiences.
Tomorrow promises new discoveries, and I can't wait to see what awaits me in this enchanting corner of Vietnam. I’m also reminded that I need to buy some mosquito repellent.
Until then, good night from Phong Nha.
