A Solo Journey into the Heart of Shirakawa-go
Day 7: A Day of Art, History, and Culinary Delights in Takayama
Immerse yourself in Takayama's art, history, and flavors, from museums to local cuisine, on a captivating solo journey through Japan.
Discovering Takayama's Treasures
Today was a day of exploration and immersion into the rich culture of the Hida region. From art museums to historical exhibits and delightful local cuisine, Takayama offered a wealth of experiences that captivated my senses. I was eager to uncover the stories and traditions woven into this charming city, and the day certainly did not disappoint.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Arai. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly prepared dishes were the perfect start to a day of exploration. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. It was a delightful and energizing meal that fueled me for the adventures ahead.
After breakfast, I headed to the Hida Takayama Museum of Art. The museum boasts a remarkable collection of European Art Nouveau glassware, furniture, and objects. Created by collector Tetsuya Mukai, the museum showcases delicate vases and paste jewelry by Tiffany, Lalique, Daum, and Gallé. Several rooms are devoted to the great masters of European decorative art in the Belle Époque, such as Louis Majorelle, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and the Vienna Secessionists. The highlight was one of Lalique's monumental glass fountains, which once adorned the Rond-point des Champs-Élysées in Paris. As someone who appreciates art and design, I found myself lost in the intricate details and exquisite craftsmanship of each piece. The museum's serene ambiance and the beauty of the artwork created a truly inspiring experience.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next on my itinerary was the Takayama City Museum. Housed in a historic building that once served as the town and city hall, the museum offered a glimpse into Takayama's administrative history and local culture. Built in 1895, the building itself is a masterpiece of hinoki cypress construction, showcasing sliding glass pane doors that were rare for the time. The exhibits included administrative materials, historical panels, and realia from the period, providing a comprehensive overview of Takayama's past. I found it fascinating to learn about the city's evolution and the events that shaped its identity.

For lunch, I chose Morizen, a local eatery known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. I decided to try their Hida beef donburi, a rice bowl topped with tender slices of Hida beef. The beef was incredibly flavorful and practically melted in my mouth. It was a truly satisfying and authentic culinary experience.

After lunch, I took a leisurely stroll through the town, eventually stopping at Daily Yamazaki Shirakawamura Shirakawago Store. This convenience store is more than just a place to grab essentials; it's a local hub that offers a glimpse into daily life in Shirakawa-go. I picked up a few snacks and drinks, including some local Japanese treats that I had never tried before. The store's friendly atmosphere and the helpful staff made it a pleasant experience. I remembered I needed to get an extra memory card for my camera, since I was taking so many pictures, but it looks like I will have to wait until I get to another town, since they didn't have any for sale.

As evening approached, I made my way to Tanaka-ya for dinner. This restaurant is renowned for its traditional soba noodles and local dishes. I ordered their signature soba set, which included a variety of small dishes and, of course, a generous serving of freshly made soba noodles. The noodles were perfectly cooked and the broth was rich and flavorful. The ambiance of the restaurant was warm and inviting, making it a perfect place to unwind after a busy day.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had learned and experienced in Takayama. The city's blend of art, history, and culinary delights had left a lasting impression on me. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include visits to the Hida Earth Wisdom Center and the Museum Hida, I'm filled with anticipation for more discoveries and cultural immersion. I also plan to check out Shiroyamakan bar tomorrow night, to cap off the day. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding, reminding me of the beauty and diversity that our world has to offer.
Back at the Shirakawago Onyado Yuinosho, I journaled about my day, appreciating the quiet and comfort of my traditional room. I am truly treasuring this solo journey, and each day brings new insights and memories. I am so glad that I decided to take this trip, even though Olivia was not able to join. I know she would have loved it here. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this enchanting region of Japan and excited for what tomorrow would bring.
