A Day of Cultural Immersion in Hida

Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of Hida, exploring its cultural roots, artistic expressions, and, of course, its delightful culinary scene. After several days in Shirakawa-go, I was excited to see what the surrounding region had to offer, and today did not disappoint. It was a day filled with learning, tasting, and experiencing the unique charm of this part of Japan.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yamamotoya. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and an array of pickled vegetables. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The warm, comforting flavors were exactly what I needed to start the day right.

Exploring Hida's Earth Wisdom

First on the itinerary was the Hida Earth Wisdom Center, and I was intrigued by what awaited me. The center is a fascinating complex dedicated to promoting regional development through folk culture. The architecture itself was impressive, with a roof inspired by the Hida mountain range. The center hosts various events, from conferences to exhibitions, but I was most interested in Museum Hida, located within the center.

Inside Museum Hida, I discovered an impressive collection of furniture and crafts made in the Hida region. What sets this museum apart is that you can actually touch and sit on the Hida-made chairs. As someone who appreciates design and craftsmanship, I found this interactive approach incredibly engaging. The museum traces the history of Hida's craftsmanship back to the Asuka period, when artisans contributed to building palaces and temples.

The essence of Hida lies in its ability to blend tradition with innovation, creating a unique cultural landscape that captivates and inspires.

The displays showcased award-winning chairs that were not only beautiful but also incredibly comfortable. I spent a good amount of time simply sitting and appreciating the craftsmanship. It was a testament to the skill and dedication of Hida's artisans, who have been perfecting their craft for centuries.

A Journey Through Art at Museum Hida

After immersing myself in the world of Hida's craftsmanship, I headed to another Museum Hida, which was my next stop. This museum offered a different perspective on the region's artistic heritage. While there appear to be multiple museums with the name Museum Hida, this one focused on a broader range of art and historical artifacts.

The Hida Takayama Town Museum is a free admission facility, with 14 exhibition halls that introduce the history, lifestyle, and culture of Takayama. On the first floor, there is an exhibition room that introduces the history of castle town Takayama and the origin of this facility, and a room that displays the Takayama Festival. The armory of Kanamori Nagachika, one of the three heroes of the Warring States period, is also on display and is very interesting.

The museum is housed in a beautiful traditional building, and the exhibits provided a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the people who have called this region home throughout the centuries. I particularly enjoyed the displays showcasing the tools and techniques used by local artisans, as well as the exhibits on the region's history and folklore. It really gave me a sense of the deep-rooted traditions that continue to shape Hida today.

A Culinary Exploration: Lunch and Dinner

By lunchtime, I had worked up quite an appetite. I decided to try Masuzono Bunsuke, a small family restaurant located a short distance from the main town. This place offers a serene and quiet atmosphere, away from the bustling crowds. The chef takes pride in serving fresh fish dishes, personally catching the live fish from the pond immediately after receiving orders.

I opted for the Masuzono Set Meal, which featured a selection of fresh river fish dishes. Each dish was prepared with care and attention to detail, and the flavors were incredibly fresh and clean. It was a truly memorable meal, and I appreciated the restaurant's commitment to using local ingredients.

For dinner, I ventured to Kita no Sho, a restaurant housed in a 250-year-old traditional Gassho-zukuri house. The atmosphere was simply magical, with the warm lighting and rustic decor creating a cozy and inviting ambiance.

Kita no Sho is known for its home-brewed magnolia miso, which has an appetizing taste. I decided to try the miso steak set menu, which paired Hida beef with the restaurant's signature miso. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, and the miso added a unique depth of flavor that I absolutely loved. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion.

Evening Relaxation at Shiroyamakan

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Shiroyamakan, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. I ordered a local craft beer and chatted with some of the locals, who were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The bar had a cozy, intimate feel, and it was a great way to experience the local nightlife.

The Shiroyamakan also has some lodging, and guests are treated to a blend of traditional Japanese hospitality and modern comfort. Each room is meticulously designed with traditional tatami flooring, elegant furnishings, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The attention to detail and luxurious amenities, such as private hot springs and exquisite dining options, elevate the experience to new heights.

As I sipped my beer, I reflected on the day's experiences. From exploring the Hida Earth Wisdom Center to savoring the local cuisine, it had been a day of cultural immersion and discovery. I felt like I had gained a deeper understanding of this region and its people.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to head to the Jinya-mae Morning Markets and Hida-Sashiko to see some local crafts [sic]. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me in Hida!

It’s nights like these that remind me why I love solo travel so much. The freedom to explore at my own pace, to discover hidden gems, and to connect with locals – it’s an experience that enriches my soul and broadens my perspective. And as I prepare for another day of exploration, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Japan.

Olivia would have loved today, especially the museums. I'll have to make sure we come back together someday.

For anyone planning a trip to this region, make sure to check for local events! Takayama is known for its festivals and cultural events, but Gifu also offers events such as the Sakurayama Wind Chime Festival.
