A Solo Journey into the Heart of Shirakawa-go
Day 4: Art, History, and Local Flavors: A Day of Immersion in Shirakawa-go
Discover art at Jin Homura Museum, delve into Gokayama's folklore, and savor local cuisine in Shirakawa-go's charming restaurants and bars.
A Cultural Tapestry Unfolds
Today was a deep dive into the cultural heart of this region, blending art, history, and the unique flavors of Shirakawa-go. It was a day of discovery, reflection, and appreciation for the traditions that have shaped this remarkable place. I found myself captivated by the stories woven into every artifact, every brushstroke, and every dish.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Gassho. The restaurant was conveniently located near the Seseragi parking lot, and the aroma of local cuisine and Hida beef filled the air. It was the perfect start to fuel my explorations. I savored every bite, appreciating the blend of flavors that spoke of the region's culinary heritage. After breakfast, I set off to immerse myself in the local art scene.

Immersed in Art at the Jin Homura Art Museum
The Jin Homura Art Museum was my first stop, and it proved to be a fascinating experience. Located next to the village parking lot in Shirakawa-go, the museum itself is a work of art, built in the traditional gassho-style. The architecture seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape, creating a serene atmosphere that enhances the artistic experience.

Inside, I discovered the works of Jin Homura, an artist known for his vivid colors and dynamic touch. His art explores the intersection of societal matters and various artistic themes. What struck me most was the contrast between the contemporary art and the traditional architecture of the building. It was a unique and thought-provoking juxtaposition. Homura's works, characterized by a flaming, multi-dimensional style, were clearly inspired by the gassho-zukuri house itself.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
I learned that Homura had used Shirakawa-go as his studio for about 20 years before donating the building and his works to the village. His passion for the region was evident in every piece. The museum is a testament to his legacy and his contribution to the cultural landscape of Shirakawa-go. The Jin Homura Art Museum served as a reminder of the power of art to transcend time and connect us to different perspectives. The experience left me with a renewed appreciation for the ways in which art can both challenge and inspire.
Delving into History at the Gokayama Folklore Museum
Next on my itinerary was the Gokayama Folklore Museum. To get there from Shirakawa-go, I took a bus, which offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Gokayama is a quieter, more authentic alternative to Shirakawa-go, with the same beautiful gassho-zukuri houses but without the crowds. This made the experience all the more immersive. The Gokayama Folklore Museum is actually composed of two museums. For the price of one ticket, you can visit both. They are filled with straw and stone items used in the past. One museum focuses on daily life, while the other showcases tools and techniques used in niter production.

The museum is housed in a 200-year-old gassho-zukuri house, offering an immersive experience of how people lived in Suganuma centuries ago. Inside, I found exhibits showcasing traditional farming and silk production tools, as well as daily household items. It was fascinating to see the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people who lived in this region. The second floor provided a glimpse into the structure of the roof, a marvel of engineering that has stood the test of time.
I also learned about the history of niter (saltpeter) production in Suganuma, an essential ingredient for gunpowder. The Saltpeter House Museum displayed the traditional tools and techniques used in this unique industry. It was a reminder of the diverse and often surprising aspects of rural life in Japan. The Gokayama Folklore Museum provided a window into the past, allowing me to appreciate the traditions and innovations that have shaped this region. It was a humbling experience to witness the resilience and adaptability of the people who have called this place home.
A Culinary Journey Through Shirakawa-go
After a day of exploring art and history, it was time to indulge in the local cuisine. For lunch, I chose Masuzono Bunsuke, a small family restaurant located a short walk from the main town. This spot offered a serene and quiet atmosphere, a welcome escape from the busier tourist areas. The chef takes pride in serving fresh fish dishes, catching the fish from the pond immediately after receiving orders.

I decided to try the Masuen set meal, which included grilled salted char, rainbow trout cooked in sweet sauce and in sashimi, and fried masu trout. The rainbow trout sashimi was particularly memorable, with a unique flavor that set it apart from salmon. It was a true taste of the region, and I savored every bite. As I enjoyed my meal, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the art at the Jin Homura Museum to the history at the Gokayama Folklore Museum, I had gained a deeper understanding of the cultural richness of this region. The fresh, local flavors of Masuzono Bunsuke were the perfect complement to these experiences.
For dinner, I ventured to Zensuke in Shirakawa-go. This restaurant is known for its kushiyaki and Hida products. The location is next to the Nagase house. Zensuke is a complex store full of souvenirs. I opted for a selection of grilled skewers, each offering a unique blend of flavors and textures. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a perfect end to the day. The skewers were cooked with heart by the owner.

As the evening drew to a close, I decided to check out Hidaji, a cozy bar in Shirakawa. It's a small, rustic soba restaurant in the center of Shirakawa-go. I enjoyed a glass of local sake, savoring the smooth, rich flavor as I reflected on the day's adventures. The warm hospitality of the staff made me feel right at home, and I struck up a conversation with a local who shared stories about the history and traditions of the village. It was a perfect way to unwind and connect with the community.
