Kyoto's Imperial Grandeur

Today, Olivia and I dove headfirst into the heart of Kyoto's imperial history. From the majestic Nijo Castle to the serene Kyoto Imperial Palace and its surrounding gardens, we soaked in the stories and sights of Japan's fascinating past. And, of course, no day is complete without savoring the local flavors, which we did with gusto.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. I was particularly excited to start the day with some authentic Japanese cuisine. After a quick subway ride, we arrived at our first destination: Nijo Castle.

Stepping Back in Time at Nijo Castle

Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a testament to the power and artistry of the Tokugawa shogunate. Built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, it served as his Kyoto residence and a symbol of the Edo Period's might. As we walked through the imposing Karamon gate, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The intricate carvings and gold leaf details were stunning, even on a relatively gray January day.

The Ninomaru Palace was the highlight. Stepping inside, we were immediately greeted by the famous 'nightingale floors.' These squeaking floorboards were designed to alert the occupants of any intruders – a clever security measure! The palace itself is a series of interconnected buildings, each room adorned with beautiful tatami mats, painted sliding doors (fusuma), and ornate ceilings. Olivia, with her graphic designer's eye, was particularly fascinated by the artwork.

We learned that Nijo Castle played a crucial role in Japanese history. It was here, in 1867, that Tokugawa Yoshinobu officially returned political power to Emperor Meiji, marking the end of the shogunate and the beginning of the Meiji Restoration. Standing in the very place where such a pivotal event occurred gave me chills.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

After exploring the Ninomaru Garden, a traditional Japanese landscape garden with a large pond, ornamental stones, and meticulously pruned pine trees, we ventured towards the Honmaru (main circle of defense). Sadly, the original palace complex and five-story castle keep were destroyed by fires in the 18th century and never rebuilt. However, an imperial residence moved from the Kyoto Imperial Palace now stands there, offering a glimpse into imperial life.

A Stroll Through Imperial History

Next on our itinerary was the Kyoto Imperial Palace, a short subway ride away. Formerly the residence of Japan's imperial family until 1868, it’s now located within the expansive Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. The garden itself is a tranquil oasis in the middle of the city. As we strolled through the grounds, we saw locals jogging, picnicking, and simply enjoying the serene atmosphere. Despite it being January, there was a subtle charm to the landscape. I read that plum blossoms start to bloom in late January, so we were just a bit early to see them in full splendor.

We wandered around the palace buildings, admiring the architecture and soaking in the history. Although we couldn't enter the buildings, the sheer scale and grandeur of the palace were impressive. It’s amazing to think that this was the center of imperial power for centuries. I was particularly interested to learn that the last imperial functions performed here were the enthronement ceremonies of the Taishō and Shōwa emperors in 1915 and 1928, respectively.

Olivia pointed out the elegant details in the architecture, noting how the design reflected a blend of power and tranquility. We imagined what it must have been like to live within these walls, surrounded by courtiers and steeped in tradition.

Before leaving the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, we explored a bit more of the grounds. The garden is vast, and it's easy to get lost in its beauty. I read about the plum and peach blossoms that bloom here in the spring, and I made a mental note to return during that season someday.

Shopping for Treasures at Kyoto LOFT

After our historical immersion, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Kyoto LOFT. This multi-story emporium is a treasure trove of contemporary Japanese lifestyle products. From innovative home goods to trendy stationery, fashionable accessories, and unique gifts, there's something for everyone.

Olivia, ever the creative soul, was drawn to the stationery section. She spent a good hour browsing through the colorful pens, notebooks, and washi tape. I, on the other hand, was fascinated by the quirky gadgets and home goods. We ended up buying a few small souvenirs for friends and family back home, as well as a couple of items for ourselves.

I picked up a couple of unique pens and a small travel notebook, while Olivia found some beautiful washi tape and a set of calligraphy brushes. I also saw smartphone cases with five Japanese folk stories pictured on them. It was a collaboration between LOFT and Kyoto's KYO-TO-TO Embroidery creations.

A Culinary Culmination

As evening approached, our stomachs began to rumble. We made our way to Katsukura - Kyoto Porta for lunch. I had heard great things about their tonkatsu, and I was eager to try it for myself. The restaurant is known for using healthy vegetable oil and quality ingredients. Katsukura's sauce is made in-house with an original blend of red wine and fruit chutney.

We both ordered the signature tonkatsu set, which came with a generous portion of crispy, golden-brown pork cutlets, shredded cabbage, miso soup, and rice. The tonkatsu was indeed exceptional – tender, juicy, and perfectly fried. Olivia particularly enjoyed grinding her own sesame seeds to create a unique dipping sauce.

For dinner, we had reservations at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO|Restaurant. This restaurant is housed in a beautiful Japanese house that was once the private residence of Takeuchi Seiho, a pioneer of modern Japanese-style painting. The setting was exquisite, with a vast garden that exuded tranquility.

The restaurant specializes in Italian cuisine, using seasonal ingredients from Kyoto and Japan. We opted for the tasting menu, which featured a variety of creative and flavorful dishes. The carpaccio of tuna from Nagasaki Prefecture was a standout, as was the handmade pasta with local vegetables. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was perfect for a romantic dinner.

Evening Indulgences

To cap off our day, we decided to check out Bar K6, known for its amazing selection of scotch and cognac. The bar had a sophisticated, old-world charm, and the bartender was a master of his craft. I ordered a classic Old Fashioned, while Olivia opted for a gin and tonic. We sipped our drinks, reflecting on the day's adventures.

We chatted with the bartender, who shared some interesting stories about the bar and its history. He mentioned that Bar K6 is owned by a progeny of the famous Bar K6 in Kyoto, and that it's a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Apparently, the owner of Bar Rocking chair, Kenji Tsubokura, was a bartender at Bar K6 from 2004-2009.

Before heading back to our hotel, we made a quick stop at a local convenience store to pick up some snacks for tomorrow. As we walked through the quiet streets of Kyoto, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. From the imperial grandeur of Nijo Castle and Kyoto Imperial Palace to the culinary delights of Katsukura and THE SODOH, it was a day filled with history, culture, and delicious food.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Philosopher's Path, Nanzen-ji, and Eikando Temple. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us in this enchanting city.

Until then, sayōnara!
