A Journey Through Kyoto's Soul

Today, Olivia and I embarked on a pilgrimage of sorts, venturing into the heart of Kyoto's spiritual and historical landscape. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of our hotel, Matsui Honkan, we set out to explore temples and gardens that have stood for centuries, testaments to the enduring beauty and tranquility of Japanese culture. It was a day of golden reflections, silent contemplation, and a deeper connection with the soul of this ancient city.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura. The restaurant was a cozy haven, and the food was nothing short of spectacular. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, which included grilled fish, miso soup, and an assortment of small, flavorful dishes. Olivia chose the all-you-can-eat Obanzai, and she relished the variety of local vegetables and delicacies on offer. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration and reflection. The staff was incredibly welcoming, and we communicated with the help of Google Translate; the restaurant was located near the Imperial Palace, and the gentle koto music created a serene atmosphere.

Kinkaku-ji: The Golden Pavilion

Our first stop was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As we approached the temple, the sight of the shimmering golden structure reflecting on the Mirror Pond took my breath away. The sun illuminated the gold leaf, creating a dazzling spectacle that felt almost otherworldly. It was a scene straight out of a postcard, yet so much more vibrant and awe-inspiring in person.

Kinkaku-ji, officially named Rokuon-ji, has a rich history dating back to 1397 when it was built as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. After his death, it was converted into a Zen temple. The pavilion's architecture blends different styles: the shinden-zukuri style of the Heian aristocracy on the first floor, the warrior aristocrat buke-zukuri style on the second, and a Zen temple style on the third. Each floor tells a different story, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped Japanese culture over the centuries.

Walking around the pond, we admired the meticulously manicured gardens and the carefully placed stones, each element contributing to the overall harmony and balance of the scene. The temple has burned down numerous times throughout its history, including during the Onin War and, more recently, in 1950 when it was set on fire by a monk. The current structure, rebuilt in 1955, is a faithful replica of the original, incorporating modern fireproofing measures to ensure its longevity. As I stood there, gazing at the golden pavilion, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. The beauty of Kinkaku-ji is not just in its appearance but in the sense of serenity it evokes, a reminder of the enduring power of art and spirituality.

Ryoan-ji: The Zen Garden

Next on our itinerary was Ryoan-ji, a Zen temple famous for its enigmatic rock garden. Stepping into the garden felt like entering a different world, a realm of quiet contemplation and minimalist beauty. The garden consists of fifteen rocks arranged in five groups on a bed of meticulously raked white gravel. The surrounding walls, made of clay, are stained and cracked, adding to the garden's sense of age and history.

The origins and meaning of the garden remain shrouded in mystery, sparking countless interpretations and theories. Some say the rocks represent islands floating on an ocean, while others believe they symbolize a mother tiger carrying cubs over the sea. Another theory suggests that the garden embodies the Japanese aesthetic concepts of wabi (refined austerity) and sabi (subdued taste), reflecting the Zen philosophy of embracing imperfection and transience.

Olivia and I sat on the wooden veranda, gazing at the garden from different angles. It's designed so that from any viewpoint, at least one of the rocks is hidden from sight. This subtle detail adds to the garden's mystique, inviting viewers to shift their perspective and engage in a deeper contemplation. The garden is meant to incite meditation. The arrangement is deliberate, ensuring that from any viewpoint, at least one stone is always hidden by others. This design is often said to represent 'imperfection,' embodying the principle that true beauty and understanding come from acknowledging and embracing the imperfections inherent in all aspects of life.

As I sat there, lost in thought, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The garden's simplicity and abstraction encouraged me to quiet my mind and focus on the present moment. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of finding peace and tranquility within ourselves, even amidst the chaos and uncertainty of life. The experience was particularly poignant for me, given the demands of my job as a data analyst. In a world driven by numbers and algorithms, it's easy to lose sight of the human element, the importance of intuition and introspection. Ryoan-ji offered a much-needed antidote, a chance to reconnect with my inner self and find clarity amidst the noise.

Ninna-ji Temple: Imperial Elegance

Our final stop of the day was Ninna-ji Temple, a historic site with deep imperial ties. Founded in 888 by Emperor Uda, Ninna-ji served as a residence for members of the Imperial family who entered the priesthood. The temple is the head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism and was designated a World Heritage Site in 1994.

As we entered the temple grounds, we were struck by the grandeur and elegance of the architecture. The main hall (Kondo), the five-story pagoda, and the Niomon gate are all impressive examples of traditional Japanese design, reflecting the temple's long and storied history. The temple buildings were burnt down in 1468 during the Onin War but were rebuilt in the early 17th century with the assistance of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Several buildings were relocated to Ninna-ji from the Imperial Palace, which was also being reconstructed at the time.

One of the highlights of our visit was the Goten, the former residence of the head priest. Built in the style of an imperial palace, the Goten features gracefully connected buildings, elegantly painted sliding doors, and beautiful rock and pond gardens. Walking through the corridors, I felt a sense of stepping back in time, imagining the lives of the emperors and priests who once resided here. I was particularly drawn to the painted screens, which depicted scenes from nature and Japanese mythology. The artistry and attention to detail were simply breathtaking.

Ninna-ji is also famous for its grove of late-blooming cherry trees called Omuro Cherries. Although it was January and the cherry blossoms were months away, I could still imagine the beauty of the temple grounds in springtime, when the trees would be in full bloom, creating a sea of pink and white. We strolled through the gardens, admiring the carefully manicured landscapes and the serene atmosphere. It was a perfect way to end our day of temple hopping, a moment of quiet reflection amidst the beauty and tranquility of Ninna-ji.

Shopping at Daimaru Kyoto Store

Before dinner, Olivia and I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Daimaru Kyoto Store. Located near Kawaramachi Station, this department store is a beacon of luxury and elegance, blending traditional charm with modern sophistication. We explored the various floors, browsing through high-end fashion, exquisite homewares, and gourmet delicacies. Olivia was particularly drawn to the Van Cleef & Arpels boutique, where she admired the exquisite jewelry and watches. I was more interested in the food floor, a culinary paradise offering a diverse selection of gourmet delights. We picked up a few souvenirs for our friends and family back home, as well as some delicious snacks for ourselves.

Evening Delights at Bar Fishbowl

As evening approached, we made our way to Bar Fishbowl for a pre-dinner drink. This chic, Western-style bar is known for its extensive cocktail menu and English-speaking staff, making it a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and we quickly struck up a conversation with a friendly bartender who recommended some of their signature cocktails. Olivia ordered a Strawberry Martini, while I opted for a Japanese whiskey. The drinks were expertly crafted, and the ambiance was perfect for unwinding after a long day of sightseeing.

Dinner at Jiki Miyazawa

For dinner, we had made a reservation at Jiki Miyazawa, a Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant known for its innovative and refined cuisine. This restaurant is a gem that you should not miss when visiting Kyoto. The food was delicious with unparalleled hospitality. The restaurant is conveniently accessible and offers counter seats in a serene atmosphere for enjoying meals. It serves beautifully presented dishes, and the course menu allows guests to savor innovative flavors of Japanese cuisine. The chef's consideration and expertise, as well as the artistic expression in the dishes, are impressive. I had read that it was hard to get a reservation, and locals often introduce their acquaintances to the restaurant.

The restaurant is led by Takami Izumi. The dishes are created with dedication and craftsmanship, impressing with their ability to bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients. The signature grilled sesame tofu, made with only salt and honey without any additives, is a gentle and delicious dish. Jiki Miyazawa utilizes seasonal ingredients to offer the best dishes. The appetizers, grilled dishes, and fried dishes exhibit innovative ingredient combinations, providing an opportunity to explore new flavors of Kyoto cuisine. The sesame tofu and freshly cooked rice are highly recommended.

As we savored each dish, we reflected on the day's experiences, from the golden shimmer of Kinkaku-ji to the silent stones of Ryoan-ji and the imperial elegance of Ninna-ji. It had been a day of spiritual awakening, a journey through Kyoto's soul that left us feeling refreshed, inspired, and deeply grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of this ancient city.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Nijo Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, followed by shopping at Kyoto LOFT and drinks at Bar K6. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. Kyoto, with its endless array of cultural and historical treasures, continues to captivate and inspire, promising new adventures and discoveries around every corner. The day's journey reminded me of a quote I once read: The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. Today, I believe, we saw Kyoto with new eyes, and it was a truly transformative experience.
