Meknes: A Royal Revelation
Today, Olivia and I ventured into the heart of Moroccan history, exploring the imperial city of Meknes. It's amazing how each day on this trip unveils a new layer of Morocco's rich tapestry. I'm excited to share our experiences, from wandering through ancient granaries to haggling in bustling souks.

Our day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Cafe machhour. The cafe, a local favorite, was bustling with early risers, and the aroma of mint tea filled the air. I savored every bite of the traditional msemen and Olivia enjoyed the fresh orange juice. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. I made sure to bring my camera and travel journal, though I did feel like I was missing my sun hat. I really need to remember to buy one soon.

Heri es-Souani: Echoes of an Empire
Our first stop was Heri es-Souani, a massive structure that once served as a granary and stable during the reign of Moulay Ismail. The sheer scale of the place was astounding. The thick-walled, barrel-vaulted granaries were designed to keep the grains cool, a testament to the ingenuity of 18th-century architecture. As we wandered through the ruins, I could almost hear the echoes of thousands of horses that were once housed here. Olivia, with her keen eye for design, was fascinated by the architectural details, especially the cedar wood doors.

The stones of Heri es-Souani whisper tales of imperial ambition and architectural prowess, inviting us to imagine a bygone era of grandeur and innovation.
The underground water channels, designed to keep the grains fresh, were particularly impressive. It was a marvel of engineering, showcasing how advanced the Moroccans were in water management. We spent a good couple of hours exploring the site, taking photos and soaking in the atmosphere. I made sure to jot down notes in my travel journal, capturing the essence of this historical landmark. It's incredible to think that this structure was part of Moulay Ismail's vision to create the most beautiful of imperial cities.
Lunch at Haytam: A Taste of Tradition
By lunchtime, we were famished. We headed to Haytam, a local restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional Moroccan decor. We ordered a tagine and some grilled meats, and the flavors were simply divine. The tagine was cooked to perfection, with tender meat and a rich, aromatic sauce. Olivia particularly enjoyed the grilled meats, which were seasoned with a blend of local spices. The warmth of the people and the flavors of the food made it a memorable experience.

Exploring the Souks of قيصرية مولاي ادريس
After lunch, we decided to immerse ourselves in the local culture by visiting the قيصرية مولاي ادريس. This bustling market was a sensory overload, with vibrant colors, exotic aromas, and the lively chatter of vendors. I was immediately drawn to the stalls selling spices, while Olivia was captivated by the intricate pottery and handwoven textiles. We spent hours wandering through the narrow pathways, haggling for souvenirs and soaking in the atmosphere.

I managed to find a beautiful handwoven rug for our living room back in Toronto, and Olivia picked up some unique jewelry. The vendors were friendly and welcoming, always ready to share a story or offer a cup of mint tea. It was an immersive experience, giving us a glimpse into the daily lives of the local people. I even managed to practice my limited Arabic, much to the amusement of the vendors.
Al Andaloussiya Diyafa: A Culinary Conclusion
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Al Andaloussiya Diyafa for dinner. This restaurant, known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine, offered a delightful end to our day. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly hospitable. We enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Moroccan dishes, savoring the flavors and reflecting on our day's adventures. I tried the local specialty, a savory tagine, and Olivia opted for the couscous, which was light and fluffy. The panoramic views of the surrounding areas from the terrace added to the charm of the evening.

Reflections on Meknes
Meknes, often referred to as the Versailles of Morocco, certainly lived up to its reputation. The city's rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture left a lasting impression on both of us. From the grandeur of Heri es-Souani to the lively souks and the delicious cuisine, Meknes offered a sensory feast that we will cherish forever. As we headed back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a remarkable place. I am also glad that we didn't forget any of our trip essentials today!
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Bassin Souani صهريج السواني and Khemis Gate. I'm particularly excited to see the water basin, which was once used to irrigate the city's gardens. And maybe we'll even check out DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN for a nightcap after a long day of sightseeing. Until then, I bid you adieu from the enchanting city of Meknes.
The weather in Meknes in June is quite pleasant, with daytime temperatures around 28°C and plenty of sunshine. However, it can get quite hot during the day, so it's important to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen. There might be some local events or festivals taking place , so it's worth checking the local listings to see if there's anything interesting happening.
As I reflect on our day in Meknes, I'm reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta:
Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
And that's exactly what I hope to do – to share the stories of our travels and inspire others to explore the world. Good night from Morocco!
