Whispers of Saints and Sunset Flavors

Today was a day of deep dives into the spiritual and culinary heart of the Moulay Idriss region. It's incredible how much history and flavor can be packed into a single day, and I'm excited to share the highlights with you. From the serene Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa to the unique dining experience at Scorpion House, Moulay Idriss continues to surprise and enchant.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Roman City, a local favorite known for its traditional Moroccan fare. Fuelled up, we set out to explore the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa, a place that resonates with a profound sense of peace. The mausoleum is a religious complex in Meknes, Morocco. The first foundation of the mausoleum dates back to the 16th century. It is the burial place of the great Saint of the city of Meknes and founder of a famous mystical brotherhood of the 16th century the Aissaoua. The architecture was stunning, with intricate tile work and serene courtyards that invited quiet contemplation. It was fascinating to learn about al-Hadi ben Issa and his influence on the region. The mausoleum is not only a tomb but also a mosque. It plays an important symbolic role for members of the Issawiya order, from Morocco and abroad. Every year, during the celebration of the birth of the Prophet, one of the oldest and most prestigious religious seasons in Morocco, a pilgrimage takes place in the area around the shrine. For five centuries, it has attracted thousands of visitors who reside in the surrounding area each year.

The experience was deeply moving, offering a glimpse into the spiritual life of Morocco. The play of light and shadow within the mausoleum created an atmosphere of reverence, and I felt a sense of connection to the generations of pilgrims who have visited this sacred site. Olivia, ever the artist, was captivated by the geometric patterns and the subtle color palette of the tile work, capturing the essence of the space in her sketchbook. It was a reminder of how travel can enrich our understanding of different cultures and beliefs.

Travel is more than seeing sights; it's about experiencing the soul of a place and connecting with its people.

Next on our itinerary was Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl, a monumental gateway that stands as a testament to the opulence of the sultanate era. Commissioned by Sultan Moulay Ismaïl in the 17th century, the portal is part of the historic city walls. As we approached, the grandeur of the portal drew us in, offering a glimpse into the opulence of the sultanate era. The intricate tile work and elegant arches were a sight to behold, and we spent a good hour admiring the craftsmanship and soaking in the history. I couldn't help but imagine what it must have been like to pass through these gates centuries ago, a gateway into a world of power and intrigue. The ornate details reflect the artistic prowess of the craftsmen of that time, showcasing a blend of Islamic and Baroque influences that characterize much of Meknes' architecture.

For lunch, we ventured to SCORPION HOUSE, a place that had been recommended to us by several locals. I was intrigued by the name, and the promise of a unique dining experience. The restaurant is the private home of Mike Richardson of Café Clock. Perched on the hillside with spectacular panoramic views over the town and surrounding hills all the way down to Volubilis. The Scorpion House will appeal to discerning guests who enjoy extraordinary destinations. The venue is a specialty venue for tastings, cooking demonstrations and private dining.

Located high on a hillside, the views from Scorpion House were breathtaking, overlooking the holy pilgrimage town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. The setting was intimate and inviting, and we were greeted warmly by the staff. The menu featured a range of Moroccan dishes with a modern twist, and we decided to try a bit of everything. The flavors were exquisite, a testament to the region's rich culinary heritage. As we savored our meal, we learned about the story behind the restaurant. It turns out that the owner, an expatriate with a passion for Moroccan cuisine, had transformed his home into a dining space to share his love for the local flavors with visitors. It was a truly special experience, and one that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Moulay Idriss.

In the late afternoon, we stopped by SCORPION HOUSE again, this time to experience it as a bar. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we enjoyed a few drinks while watching the sunset over the hills. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery. It was the kind of moment that makes travel so rewarding – a chance to connect with fellow travelers, share stories, and simply enjoy the beauty of the world around us.

Dinner was at Restaurant Moulay Idriss, a charming eatery that offered a more traditional Moroccan dining experience. The tagine was particularly delicious, and we savored every bite as we reflected on the day's adventures. It was a fitting end to a day that had taken us from the sacred to the savory, from the ancient to the modern. As we walked back to our accommodation, the stars twinkled above us, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the magic of Moulay Idriss.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Dar El-Makhzen and Place Moulay Hassan, further immersing ourselves in the history and culture of the region. We'll start the day with breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Nassim and look forward to another day of exploration and discovery. And perhaps, we'll find another hidden gem, another story waiting to be told. Until then, goodnight from Moulay Idriss!

As I sit here writing, I realize that travel is more than just ticking off sights on a list. It's about the people you meet, the stories you hear, and the moments that touch your soul. Moulay Idriss has certainly left its mark on me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
