Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco: Chefchaouen Adventure
Day 10: A Day of Blue Hues and Moroccan Flavors in Chefchaouen
Immerse yourself in Chefchaouen's blue streets, vibrant markets, and delicious Moroccan cuisine. A day of cultural exploration with friends.
Wandering Through the Azure Alleys
Today in Chefchaouen was like stepping into a dream, where every corner turned revealed a new shade of blue. The air was filled with the scent of spices and the sounds of a vibrant culture, making it a day of unforgettable experiences. From the bustling markets to the quiet, winding streets, Chefchaouen truly captivated all of my senses.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Sofia. The restaurant was cozy, and the aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea filled the air. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast – msemen with honey and a steaming glass of mint tea. The msemen was flaky and perfectly sweet, providing the perfect start to our day. Olivia enjoyed a delicious harira soup, which she said was the best she’d had so far on our trip. We sat outside, soaking in the morning sun and planning our adventures for the day.

Fueled and ready, we started our exploration at Boulevard Mohamed V. The boulevard was bustling with activity, locals going about their daily routines, and tourists like us, eager to take in the sights. The energy was infectious. We strolled along, admiring the shops and the architecture, snapping photos of the vibrant blue buildings that lined the street. It was the perfect place to get a feel for the rhythm of Chefchaouen.

Wandering through Chefchaouen is like walking through a painting, where every brushstroke is a different shade of blue.
Next on our list was Tuiles colorées, one of the most Instagrammable spots in Chefchaouen. And it lived up to the hype! The colorful tiles created a stunning visual, with vibrant blues, yellows, and greens adorning the walls and steps. Olivia and I spent a good hour here, taking photos from every angle. The play of light and shadow on the tiles was mesmerizing, and it felt like we were in a living work of art. I even managed to get a few shots that I think will look great on the blog. I’m already planning which ones to post!

After our photo session, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at the Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop. I’ve always been fascinated by Moroccan craftsmanship, and this shop was a treasure trove of beautiful, handcrafted items. From intricately designed lamps to delicate copper teapots, each piece told a story of skill and tradition. I ended up buying a small copper lamp as a souvenir, something to remind me of our time in this magical blue city.

All that shopping made us hungry, so we headed to Restaurant Hajji for lunch. The restaurant was charming, with a cozy interior and a menu filled with traditional Moroccan dishes. I ordered a tagine with chicken and olives, while Olivia opted for the couscous with vegetables. The tagine was rich and flavorful, the chicken tender and infused with the aroma of spices. Olivia raved about her couscous, saying it was light, fluffy, and packed with vegetables. We shared a pot of mint tea, savoring the sweet and refreshing taste as we watched the world go by.

To beat the afternoon heat, we stopped by a local stall for some fresh orange juice. The vendor squeezed the oranges right in front of us, and the juice was incredibly refreshing. We sat on a nearby bench, sipping our juice and people-watching. It was a simple pleasure, but it was moments like these that made our trip so special.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to MIDO'S for dinner. MIDO'S is known for its fast-food style Moroccan dishes. I decided to try their kefta burger which was surprisingly delicious. Olivia chose a chicken sandwich, which she enjoyed. It was a casual and satisfying end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Tonight, as I sit here writing, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Chefchaouen is a city that truly captivates the heart and soul. The blue streets, the vibrant markets, and the delicious food all combine to create a magical atmosphere. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Akchour and Grande Cascade D'akchour. I've heard the landscapes are breathtaking, and I can't wait to capture them with my camera. We will start the day with breakfast at Restaurant Morisco before heading out for our hike. It’s going to be another amazing day, I can feel it!
I'm also glad I came on this trip with friends. It's always more fun exploring new places with company, and sharing these experiences with them has made it even more memorable. Plus, Olivia is always there to remind me to slow down and appreciate the little things, which is something I definitely need on these whirlwind adventures. I almost forgot the travel adapter again today, lucky Olivia remembered to pack hers! And I'm glad she did, because I would have been completely lost without it. It's the little things like that that make traveling with her so much easier. I am looking forward to sharing more stories and photos with you all soon. Until then, happy travels!
P.S. I am also thinking of my parents back in Évora. I know they would love Chefchaouen. I will have to bring them here someday! Portugal is beautiful, but Morocco has a different kind of charm that I think they would appreciate.
I'm so glad I decided to come on this trip. It's been a great way to de-stress from work. Being a data analyst can be pretty intense, and it's nice to get away from the screens and spreadsheets for a while. Plus, it gives me a chance to indulge in my passions for photography and exploring new cultures. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up some new recipes to try out when I get back to Toronto!
