Exploring the Renaissance Charm of Urbino with Friends
Day 6: A Day of Renaissance Echoes: Exploring Urbino's Heart
Wander through Urbino's historic Republic Square, admire Raphael's monument, and reflect in the grand Cattedrale. A day of art and history.
Echoes of the Renaissance
Today, Urbino truly felt like stepping back in time. The city's heart, with its stunning architecture and vibrant atmosphere, captivated me. It's amazing how a place can hold so much history and still feel so alive. I spent the day exploring the main square, paying homage to a local hero, and finding solace in a beautiful cathedral. Come along as I share the highlights of my day!
My day began, as it often does, with the promise of good coffee. I headed to Caffè del Teatro for breakfast with my friends. We sat outside, soaking in the morning sun and the lively chatter of locals preparing for the weekend. The pastries were delicious, but it was the atmosphere that truly set the stage for the day.
After breakfast, we made our way to Republic Square. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stop and stare. The architecture is stunning, with buildings that seem to whisper stories of centuries past. The square was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all drawn to its magnetic charm.

As I stood there, I couldn't help but think about how much this square must have seen over the years. From grand celebrations to quiet moments of reflection, it has been the backdrop to countless lives. It's a place where the past and present intertwine, creating a unique sense of place. Even though I now call Edmonton home, places like this remind me of the rich history that Mozambique, my birth country, also holds.
“The true voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
In the center of the square stands the Monument to Raphael, a tribute to Urbino’s most famous son. I’ve always admired Raphael’s work, his ability to capture beauty and emotion with such grace. Standing before his monument, I felt a sense of connection to the city and its artistic legacy.

It's inspiring to see a city so proud of its heritage. It reminds me of the importance of honoring our roots, something I try to instill in my children, Nelson and Sheila. We often talk about Mozambique, its culture, and its history, even though they were born and raised in Canada. It's crucial for them to understand where they come from, just as it's important for me to appreciate the legacy of places like Urbino.
Next on the itinerary was the Cattedrale dei Santi Mariano e Giacomo. The cathedral’s impressive facade dominates the Urbino skyline, a testament to the city's rich religious history. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the sense of peace and tranquility. The high ceilings, stained glass windows, and ornate decorations created an atmosphere of reverence.

The Cattedrale dei Santi Mariano e Giacomo, dedicated to the city's patron saints, Mariano and Giacomo, was erected between the 13th and 14th centuries. Its Gothic architecture and the beautiful artwork inside offer a serene escape from the bustling city outside. It was a perfect spot for quiet contemplation.
After a morning filled with history and art, lunch was calling. We decided to try Atabulus Enoteca con cucina, a local spot known for its traditional cuisine. The food was hearty and delicious, the kind of meal that warms you from the inside out. I had a pasta dish with truffles, a regional specialty, and it was divine.

In the afternoon, I decided to explore some of the local shops. I stumbled upon Liliana Martinez - Artigianato Artistico, a charming artisan shop. The shop was filled with unique, handcrafted treasures, each one telling a story of the local culture. I ended up buying a beautiful ceramic piece as a souvenir, a reminder of my time in Urbino.

It’s fascinating to see how art and craftsmanship are still thriving in this city. It's a testament to the enduring power of creativity and the importance of preserving traditional skills. As an electrician, I appreciate the value of craftsmanship, the dedication and skill required to create something beautiful and functional. Perhaps one day, Nelson and Sheila will also find their own passions, whether it's in the arts, sciences, or trades.
As the day drew to a close, we gathered at Underground PUB for a drink. This unique spot, located, as the name suggests, underground, had a cozy and inviting atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The Underground PUB is a visually appealing venue in the city center, offering music, table football, and a diverse beer selection. It’s a popular spot for students and those looking for a casual hangout.
