Sunday Serenity in Sintra

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a pace perfectly suited to a Sunday in Sintra. Elke and I set out with no particular rush, eager to absorb the town's atmosphere at our leisure. It's amazing how slowing down can reveal details you'd otherwise miss, and today was a testament to that.

Our first stop was Becco de Sintra for breakfast. I enjoyed a strong coffee and a pastel de nata, while Elke chose a yogurt with fresh fruit. It was a simple start to the day, but a delightful one, setting the tone for the relaxed exploration to come.

Villa Sassetti: A Lombardian Dream in Sintra

We then made our way to Villa Sassetti, a place I had read about but wasn't quite prepared for. The villa, with its Lombardian-inspired architecture, felt like a hidden world. Victor Carlos Sassetti, the original owner, clearly had a vision when he commissioned his summer house, and his friend Luigi Manini helped him bring this vision to life. The terracotta tones of the circular tower gave it a unique Mediterranean aesthetic, something quite different from the other grand estates we've seen.

The gardens were just as captivating. As we strolled along the winding paths, we were surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle sound of water trickling through artificial watercourses. It was easy to see how Sassetti intended the villa and its gardens to be a harmonious blend of nature and architecture. I paused to take a few photographs, trying to capture the essence of this tranquil oasis.

I learned that after Sassetti's death, the property was leased to Calouste Gulbenkian, an Armenian millionaire, for a time. I can only imagine the stories these walls could tell. It's fascinating how places like Villa Sassetti hold so much history within their walls and gardens.

The beauty of Sintra lies not just in its grand monuments, but in the quiet corners where history and nature intertwine.

Sintra National Palace: A Royal Residence Through the Ages

Next on our list was the Sintra National Palace, also known as the Town Palace. Unlike the Pena Palace's Romanticist exuberance, the National Palace felt more grounded, a testament to its long history as a royal residence. It stands as the best-preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal, which is quite remarkable.

As we wandered through the palace's many rooms, I was struck by the blend of architectural styles – Medieval, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance, and even Moorish influences. Each monarch who resided here left their mark, adding to the palace's unique character. The two massive cone-shaped chimneys are quite the sight, and I learned they were built to vent the kitchens.

The interior was just as impressive. The Mudejar tiles were stunning, and I was fascinated by the heraldic room, with its display of Portuguese coats of arms. It's incredible to think that this palace was used by the Portuguese Royal Family until the end of the monarchy in 1910. I tried to imagine what it must have been like to live here, surrounded by such opulence and history.

We took a break at Dona Maria for lunch. It was a welcome respite, and we enjoyed some traditional Portuguese dishes. I had the arroz de marisco (seafood rice), while Elke opted for grilled sardines. It was the perfect fuel for the afternoon's adventures.

Shopping and Sipping: A Taste of Sintra's Delights

After lunch, we strolled through the town, popping into MO Sintra, where Elke found a lovely scarf. The shop had a good selection of clothing and accessories, and it was nice to support a local business. I always appreciate finding unique souvenirs that remind me of our travels.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Cantinho do Lord Byron, a charming bar named after the famous poet who once stayed in Sintra. We enjoyed a glass of local wine, soaking in the atmosphere and reflecting on the day's discoveries. The bar had a cozy feel, and it was easy to imagine Lord Byron himself sitting there, penning his verses.

Later, we enjoyed dinner at Taverna do Município, savoring authentic Portuguese flavors in a cozy setting. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming.

We learned that Pedro Almeida, a musician, is playing at Quinta Da Ribafria. It is tempting, but we are both tired from the day's walking.

As we walked back to Casa Holstein Quinta de São Sebastião, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience Sintra's beauty and history. It's a place that truly captures the imagination, and I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. We plan to visit Cape Roca and Praia das Azenhas do Mar, two more gems that Sintra has to offer. I'm particularly excited to see Cape Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. It promises to be a breathtaking experience, and I'm eager to capture its beauty through my lens. And perhaps Elke will find a new scarf at Chocolame!

Tomorrow, we leave the palaces behind and head for the coast, with a visit to Cape Roca planned. I'm looking forward to seeing the dramatic cliffs and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. It's a different side of Sintra, and I'm eager to explore it with Elke.
