Sintra's Coastal Charms: A Day at Cape Roca and Azenhas do Mar

Today, Elke and I ventured beyond the fairytale palaces of Sintra to explore its dramatic coastline. We were eager to experience the raw beauty of Cape Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, and the picturesque village of Azenhas do Mar. It promised to be a day filled with breathtaking views and authentic Portuguese flavors.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at COMO Restaurante. The restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere and a menu that perfectly blended traditional Portuguese cuisine with modern culinary techniques. I opted for the *Strüdel de Cogumelos do Bosque*, a forest mushroom strudel on a bed of roasted tomato, while Elke chose the classic *Bacalhau Palácio da Vila*. Both dishes were exquisite, providing a perfect start to our day of exploration. The coffee, as always, was robust and aromatic, setting the tone for adventure.

Fueled and ready, we set off towards Cape Roca. The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads offering glimpses of the lush Sintra hills and the vast Atlantic Ocean. As we approached the cape, the landscape transformed into a rugged, windswept terrain. The air was noticeably cooler, carrying the salty scent of the sea.

Arriving at Cape Roca, we were immediately struck by the sheer cliffs plunging into the ocean. The views were simply stunning. The powerful waves crashed against the rocks below, creating a symphony of nature's raw energy. We walked along the marked paths, taking in the panoramic vistas and capturing the moment with my camera. Despite the strong winds, the sun shone brightly, casting a golden glow on the landscape.

The allure of Cape Roca lies not just in its geographical significance, but in the feeling of standing at the edge of the world, embraced by the vastness of the ocean and the untamed beauty of nature.

After spending a good hour at Cape Roca, soaking in the views and the bracing sea air, we drove to Azenhas do Mar. This charming seaside village is perched dramatically on a cliffside, offering a postcard-perfect scene. The white-washed houses with their red-tiled roofs cascaded down the hillside towards the ocean, creating a stunning visual contrast against the blue waters.

We parked the car and strolled through the narrow streets, admiring the traditional architecture and the vibrant atmosphere. The village exuded a sense of tranquility and authenticity, a welcome change from the bustling tourist spots in Sintra. We made our way down to the beach, a small sandy cove nestled between the cliffs. Although the tide was high, leaving only a small strip of sand, the natural seawater pools were inviting. I watched as children splashed and played in the pools, their laughter echoing against the cliffs.

For lunch, we chose A Raposa, a restaurant known for its Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine. Located in a historic building in Sintra, the restaurant had a charming and refined ambiance. We started with the *Bacalhau à Brás*, a traditional codfish dish with scrambled eggs and potatoes, and *Iberico Pork Cheek with Chesnut*. For the main course, Elke ordered the grilled octopus, while I opted for the seafood risotto. Each dish was a testament to the chef's skill, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients and the rich flavors of Portuguese cuisine.

After a satisfying lunch, we explored the local shops, including Chocolame. I couldn't resist purchasing a few *salames de chocolate* as gifts for our friends back home. The shop was filled with tempting treats, and the aroma of chocolate was simply irresistible.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to indulge in a pre-dinner drink at Caipirinha Bar. This lively bar offered a taste of Brazil in the heart of Sintra, with its vibrant atmosphere and expertly crafted cocktails. I ordered their signature *caipirinha*, while Elke chose a glass of Portuguese wine. Sipping our drinks on the terrace, we enjoyed the lively ambiance and the friendly chatter of fellow travelers.

For our final meal of the day, we dined at Tulhas, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Portuguese dishes. The restaurant had a rustic charm, with its cozy interior and warm lighting. We ordered the *Bacalhau com Natas*, a creamy codfish dish that Tulhas is famous for, and the *Bife a Tulhas*, a traditional steak dish. The *Bacalhau com Natas* was indeed exceptional, living up to its reputation as one of the best in Sintra. The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful.

Tomorrow, we are planning to delve deeper into Lisbon's rich history by visiting the Museum of Lisbon / Pimenta Palace and the Lisbon Cathedral. I am particularly excited about exploring the historical artifacts and architectural marvels that Lisbon has to offer. I am also looking forward to trying out some new restaurants, such as Restaurante Azenhas do Mar for lunch and Adega Machado for dinner. It will be another day of discovery and cultural immersion, and I can't wait to share it with you all.
