A Lisbon Daydream

Today, Elke and I ventured beyond Sintra's familiar hills, trading its mystical forests for the vibrant pulse of Lisbon. It was a day of historical immersion and culinary exploration, a sensory feast that left us both utterly captivated. Leaving our cozy Casa Holstein Quinta de São Sebastião, we set out to discover the heart of Portugal's capital.

Our morning began with a delightful breakfast at Sintra Terrace. Perched with a view, the terrace offered a charming start to the day. I savored a strong coffee while Elke enjoyed a selection of local pastries. The crisp morning air and the promise of a day filled with discovery set a cheerful tone. The location was beautiful and the service was great. It was the perfect launchpad for our Lisbon adventure.

We made our way to Lisbon, eager to delve into its historical treasures. Our first stop was the Museum of Lisbon / Pimenta Palace. The palace itself is a sight to behold, an 18th-century structure that whispers tales of kings and mistresses. Inside, we embarked on a journey through Lisbon's past, from its prehistoric roots to the early 20th century.

The museum is set in an 18th-century palace, and showcases Lisbon's history and diverse cultural influences from prehistoric times to the early 20th century. We wandered through rooms adorned with blue tiles, each telling a story of the city's evolution. A detailed model of Lisbon before the devastating 1755 earthquake particularly caught my eye, offering a poignant glimpse into a lost world. Elke was fascinated by the archaeological artifacts, remnants of Roman and Moorish civilizations that once thrived here. The friendly peacocks roaming the Bordallo Pinheiro garden added a touch of whimsy to the experience.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Leaving the Pimenta Palace, we headed towards the Lisbon Cathedral, or Sé de Lisboa, a building that has stood the test of time. Constructed in 1147 after King Afonso Henriques reclaimed the city from the Moors, it is the oldest church in Lisbon. Its Romanesque architecture, although modified over the centuries, exudes a sense of strength and resilience.

As we stepped inside, I felt a palpable connection to the generations who had sought solace and inspiration within its walls. Sunlight streamed through the rose windows, casting intricate patterns on the ancient stone floor. Elke and I admired the sculptured capitals and the vaulted ceilings, testaments to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. The cathedral's history is etched into every stone, a reminder of Lisbon's enduring spirit.

The Lisbon Cathedral has survived many earthquakes and has been modified, renovated and restored several times, resulting in a mix of different architectural styles. We learned about the various reconstructions and renovations the cathedral has undergone, a testament to its enduring significance. Archaeological excavations have revealed traces of Arab, Roman, and medieval structures, further enriching its historical tapestry.

By lunchtime, our appetites were calling, and we journeyed to Azenhas do Mar for a seafood feast at Restaurante Azenhas do Mar. This restaurant is perched on the coast, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic. The village itself is incredibly picturesque, with whitewashed houses clinging to the cliffs. As we savored our meal, we watched the waves crash against the shore, a mesmerizing symphony of nature.

We indulged in a Cataplana de Marisco, a traditional Portuguese seafood stew brimming with fresh catches from the Atlantic. The flavors were exquisite, a testament to the restaurant's dedication to quality and tradition. I savored every bite, while Elke enjoyed a glass of crisp Vinho Verde, a perfect complement to the seafood. The restaurant is known for its great selection of fish and its top location by the sea. The staff was very professional, making everyone comfortable and happy.

As the afternoon waned, we returned to Sintra, but the day was far from over. We decided to explore the local scene, starting with a bit of shopping at Sintra Shop - Sua loja de compras online. Though I'm not typically one for online shopping while traveling, it was interesting to see the local offerings and perhaps find a few unique souvenirs for Maximilian. Elke, of course, found several items that caught her eye.

Our final stop for the day was Vip Sintra, a bar in Terrugem. We enjoyed a couple of glasses of local wine, reflecting on the day's adventures. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration. Vip Sintra is known for its relaxed and welcoming experience. For dinner, we ventured to Adega Machado, enticed by the promise of traditional Fado music. Located in Lisbon's Bairro Alto, this restaurant offered an immersive cultural experience. The restaurant has three floors, a main room, a cellar, and a lounge terrace with bar service. As we settled into our seats, the haunting melodies of Fado filled the air, transporting us to another realm.

The food at Adega Machado was good. We savored traditional Portuguese dishes, each bite infused with the flavors of the region. The Fado performance was truly captivating, a showcase of Portugal's rich musical heritage. The service was attentive. While some find the food average, the overall experience is worth it for the music alone.

As the evening drew to a close, we made our way back to Casa Holstein, our hearts full of Lisbon's echoes. The city had woven its magic, leaving us with memories to cherish. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, continuing our exploration of Lisbon's historical landmarks. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the Jerónimos Monastery. Tonight, however, I'll rest and reflect on the beauty and history we experienced today.

Until tomorrow,
Johann
