Exploring the Natural Wonders of Phong Nha-Ke Bang
Day 7: A Day of Ducks and Discoveries in Phong Nha
Experience the charm of rural Vietnam with playful ducks, serene landscapes, and delightful local cuisine in Phong Nha-Ke Bang.
Ducks, Wildlife, and Vietnamese Flavors
Today was a day of simple pleasures and unexpected delights here in Phong Nha-Ke Bang. It’s amazing how a change of pace can bring a whole new perspective to a journey. After days of exploring caves and trekking through jungles, we decided to embrace the rural charm of this region. And what a rewarding decision it turned out to be!
Our day began with breakfast at The Villas Restaurant. While the setting was lovely, I must admit my mind was already wandering toward the day’s adventures. After a quick and satisfying meal, we set off for our first stop: The Duck Stop. I had heard whispers of this quirky place, a family-run farm where ducks reign supreme, and I was eager to see what it was all about.

The drive itself was beautiful, passing through the idyllic Bong Lai Valley. The landscape was a patchwork of rice paddies and winding dirt roads, with the Trường Sơn Mountains providing a stunning backdrop. It felt like stepping back in time, away from the usual tourist trails.
Arriving at The Duck Stop, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was immediately greeted by a flurry of feathered friends. Over 120 ducks waddled around freely, seemingly unfazed by the visitors. Maximilian was in his element, he loves animals, and immediately started snapping pictures. Elke, a bit more reserved, watched with a smile as the ducks paraded around us.
We joined in the fun, feeding the ducks and even experiencing the infamous “duck massage,” where the ducks gently nibble at your feet. It was ticklish, to say the least, and brought peals of laughter from all of us. I must admit, I felt a bit silly at first, but it was impossible not to get caught up in the joyous atmosphere. It was a welcome change from the sometimes-serious business of travel and historical exploration.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the simplest of places.
One of the highlights was meeting the owner, a young and enterprising farmer named Tran Van Quynh. He shared his story of how The Duck Stop evolved from a simple duck farm into a unique tourist attraction. His passion for his animals and his land was evident, and it was inspiring to see how he had created such a special place.
Maximilian, ever the adventurous one, decided to take a buffalo ride. The buffalo, named Donald Trump (I kid you not!), was a gentle giant, and Maximilian steered him through the fields with surprising skill. Elke and I opted for a leisurely walk around the farm, soaking in the peaceful rural scenery. The air was fresh, the birds were singing, and it was a moment of pure tranquility.
Before leaving The Duck Stop, we sampled some local delicacies, including Banh Xeo, a crispy Vietnamese pancake. It was a delicious and satisfying snack, the perfect ending to our visit.
Next on our itinerary was the Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure. This was a completely different experience, a chance to see animals in a more natural setting. The enclosure is designed to rehabilitate animals before they are released back into the wild, and it was heartening to see the efforts being made to protect the region's biodiversity.

The walk through the enclosure was beautiful, with lush greenery and the sounds of wildlife all around. We spotted monkeys in the distance, swinging through the trees, and various species of birds. The trails were a bit overgrown in places, but it added to the sense of adventure. It was a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty of this region.
I couldn't help but reflect on the contrast between The Duck Stop and the Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure. One was a celebration of human-animal interaction, the other a testament to preserving the natural world. Both, in their own way, offered a unique perspective on the beauty and diversity of Phong Nha-Ke Bang.
As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back to Phong Nha town, stopping briefly at Nhà May Phan Hương, a local tailor shop. Elke was interested in getting a custom-made Ao Dai, the traditional Vietnamese dress. The shop was small and unassuming, but the fabrics were beautiful, and the tailor was skilled and attentive. We spent a pleasant hour discussing designs and taking measurements, and Elke is now eagerly awaiting the finished product.

For dinner, we chose PHONG NHA FAMILY RESTAURANT (NHÀ HÀNG GIA ĐÌNH VIỆT NAM), drawn in by the promise of authentic Vietnamese cuisine. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, a testament to its popularity. We ordered a variety of dishes, including fresh spring rolls, Cao Lau noodles, and grilled pork with rice paper. Each dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the skill and passion of the chefs.

As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I feel a sense of contentment. It wasn't a day of grand adventures or historical discoveries, but it was a day of genuine connection – with nature, with animals, and with the local culture. Sometimes, it's the simple things that make a journey truly special.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Bờ bắc sông Son - Phong Nha Kẻ Bàng and Hang Trạ Ang, venturing further into the natural wonders of this region. I am excited to see what awaits us, but I will also carry with me the memories of today – the laughter, the tranquility, and the simple joys of a day well spent.
I'm also looking forward to trying out Bamboo Chopsticks for breakfast tomorrow, I've heard good things about their local dishes. Perhaps we'll stop by Cây Bàng Quán - Big Tree Restaurant for a drink in the evening too. It's always good to unwind after a day of exploring.
This trip has been a wonderful experience for all of us. It's not just about seeing new places, but also about creating lasting memories with family. And as we continue our journey, I am grateful for every moment, every experience, and every connection we make along the way.
I am reminded of something my grandfather used to say:
The best souvenirs are the memories we make.
He was a wise man, my grandfather, and his words resonate with me now more than ever. This trip to Phong Nha-Ke Bang is not just a vacation; it's a collection of moments, a tapestry of experiences that we will cherish for years to come. And I am grateful to be sharing it all with my family.
I wonder what tomorrow will bring. I am certain it will be another day filled with adventure, discovery, and unforgettable moments.
