A Day of Exploration and Natural Beauty
Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the raw, untamed beauty of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. From the depths of Elephant Cave to the serene trails of the Botanic Garden, every moment was a testament to nature's artistry. It was a day that reminded me of the simple joys of exploration and the profound peace found in nature's embrace.

Our sixth day in Vietnam began with a hearty breakfast at Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of traditional Vietnamese flavors set the perfect tone for the adventures that lay ahead. I opted for a steaming bowl of Pho, while Elke enjoyed a plate of Banh Mi. Maximilian, ever the adventurous one, tried a local rice porridge.
Fueled and ready, we set off for the Elephant Cave, a destination that had been high on my list since we began planning this trip. The drive itself was an experience, winding through the stunning landscapes of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a sprawling expanse of limestone karst formations, dense jungles, and a network of intricate cave systems.
The trek to Elephant Cave was described as moderate, suitable for those with a basic level of fitness. As we started our ascent, I quickly realized that 'moderate' in Phong Nha terms meant a good, solid workout. The trail led us deep into the jungle, the air thick with humidity and the sounds of the forest all around us. We passed under a canopy of trees, their roots forming intricate patterns on the forest floor. The occasional ray of sunlight pierced through the leaves, illuminating the path ahead.
Maximilian, with his boundless energy, bounded ahead, eager to discover what lay around each bend. Elke and I took a more measured pace, stopping occasionally to catch our breath and admire the scenery. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of the natural world around us. It was a far cry from my workshop in Heidelberg, but a welcome change of pace.
After about twenty minutes of uphill trekking, the entrance to Elephant Cave came into view. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight. The cave entrance, a massive opening in the side of the mountain, stood sixty meters high and three hundred meters long. Green vegetation clung to the rocks, creating a stunning contrast against the gray limestone.
Inside the cave, the temperature dropped noticeably. Our guide provided us with helmets and headlamps, and we ventured into the depths of the earth. The beam of my headlamp danced across the cave walls, revealing a world of stalactites and stalagmites, each formed over thousands of years. The scale of the cave was immense, and I felt a sense of wonder at the forces of nature that had carved out this space over millennia.
Our guide shared stories about the cave's history, including its use as a shelter during the war. It was humbling to think about the people who had sought refuge in this very spot, finding solace in the heart of the mountain. As I stood there, surrounded by the echoes of the past, I felt a deep connection to the earth and to the human story.
In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
Emerging from the Elephant Cave, we hiked through the Ma Da Valley, eventually arriving at the heavenly blue waters of Ma Da Crystal Lake. The opportunity to swim and enjoy a delicious jungle BBQ prepared by our porter was most welcome. The cool water was incredibly refreshing after our trek, and the BBQ was a delightful treat. Maximilian, of course, couldn't resist the urge to do some cliff jumping.
After our adventurous morning, we were ready for a change of pace, so after lunch at Lotus Restaurant, we decided to spend the afternoon at the Phong Nha Botanic Garden. Located just a short drive from Phong Nha town, the garden is a sanctuary of tranquility, showcasing the region's diverse flora and fauna.

As we entered the garden, we were immediately enveloped in a sense of calm. The air was fresh and clean, and the sounds of the jungle were replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. We followed one of the well-maintained trails, winding our way through the lush greenery.
The Botanic Garden is home to over 500 plant species, many of which are listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book and the IUCN Red List. As we walked, we saw a dazzling array of orchids, their vibrant colors popping against the green foliage. We also spotted several species of birds, their songs filling the air with melody. It was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity of this region and the importance of conservation efforts.
We chose the medium tour, which would allow us to see both Vang Anh Lake and the Wind Waterfall. The interpretive trail was about 4 kilometers, and offered scenic views and a peaceful connection with nature. We walked beneath ancient trees, observed wild orchids, and listened to birdsong.
One of the highlights of the Botanic Garden was the Thac Gio (Wind Waterfall), a thirty-meter cascade of cool, refreshing water. We spent some time admiring the waterfall, feeling the spray on our faces and listening to the roar of the water. It was a perfect spot to relax and soak in the beauty of nature.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to our accommodation, feeling grateful for the experiences we had shared. From the adventure of Elephant Cave to the serenity of the Botanic Garden, it had been a day of contrasts, but both experiences had left us with a deeper appreciation for the natural wonders of Phong Nha-Ke Bang.
For dinner, we chose The Rice House, known for its traditional Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the aroma of spices filled the air. We ordered a selection of dishes, including fresh spring rolls, flavorful noodle soups, and savory stir-fries. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, savoring the flavors of Vietnam and reflecting on the beauty we had encountered.
After dinner, and before heading back, we decided to check out Dubai Pub Phong Nha. It was a cozy spot where locals and tourists mingled. The atmosphere was relaxed, the staff friendly, and it was the perfect place to unwind after a day of adventure.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I am filled with a sense of contentment. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has exceeded all of my expectations. It is a place of unparalleled beauty, where adventure and tranquility coexist in perfect harmony. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this region with my family, and I look forward to discovering what tomorrow brings.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit The Duck Stop and the Nui Doi Semiwild Enclosure. I have heard that The Duck Stop is a unique and entertaining experience, where visitors can interact with a flock of ducks and learn about local farming practices. The Nui Doi Semiwild Enclosure, on the other hand, offers a chance to see animals in a more natural environment. I am particularly interested in seeing the Langurs that inhabit the area. I am sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.
Before I turn in for the night, I must remember to charge my camera. I wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to capture the beauty of The Duck Stop and the Nui Doi Semiwild Enclosure. And perhaps, I will also try to find a local shop to replace the rain poncho and portable phone charger that I forgot to pack. It seems that even the most meticulous planner can overlook a few essentials.
Discover the breathtaking caves and lush landscapes of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a perfect family getaway filled with adventure and relaxation.
