A Day of Ancient Wonders

After a long journey from Frankfurt, via Osaka, I was eager to finally set foot in JW Marriott Hotel Nara. The train ride itself was a treat, offering glimpses of the Japanese countryside that I had only ever dreamed of. Arriving at the JW Marriott Hotel Nara, I felt a sense of anticipation for the days ahead, ready to explore this city steeped in history and culture. Today marked the beginning of my solo adventure, and I couldn't wait to see what Nara had in store.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at the hotel's Main Dining Room 'Mikasa'. The selection was impressive, a mix of Western and Japanese dishes, but I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast to fully embrace the local culture. The delicate flavors of the miso soup, perfectly cooked rice, and grilled fish were a wonderful start to the day. Fuelled and ready, I set out to explore Nara Park.

As I stepped into Nara Park, I was immediately greeted by the famous Nara deer. They roamed freely, coexisting peacefully with tourists and locals alike. It was quite a sight! I couldn't resist buying some deer crackers (shika senbei) to feed them. Some were polite, gently nudging my hand for a treat, while others were more assertive, eager to snatch the crackers right out of my hand. It was all part of the fun, though I quickly learned to keep the crackers safely tucked away until I was ready to offer them.

Nara is a place where the ancient and the natural intertwine, creating an unforgettable experience.

My next stop was Todai-ji Temple, a short walk through the park. The sheer size of the Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall) was awe-inspiring. As a restorer of antique furniture, I couldn't help but marvel at the craftsmanship and engineering that went into creating such a massive wooden structure. Inside, the colossal bronze statue of the Great Buddha was equally impressive. I spent some time admiring the intricate details of the statue, reflecting on the rich history and spiritual significance of this iconic landmark.

I decided to try my luck with the pillar challenge, a popular activity where visitors attempt to crawl through a hole in a pillar said to be the size of Buddha's nostril. It was a tight squeeze, but I managed to make it through, hoping for good fortune in the days to come. The temple grounds themselves were serene, a perfect place for quiet contemplation amidst the bustling crowds.

After immersing myself in the grandeur of Todai-ji, I made my way to Kasuga Taisha Shrine. The approach to the shrine was lined with thousands of stone and bronze lanterns, creating a mystical atmosphere. The vermilion-painted buildings of the shrine stood out against the lush green forest, a striking contrast that added to the shrine's beauty. I learned that the lanterns are lit during special events in February and August, creating a magical spectacle. While I won't be here in August for the Chugen Mantoro light-up, I can only imagine how enchanting it must be. I took my time exploring the shrine complex, admiring the intricate details of the architecture and the peaceful surroundings.

By this point, I was feeling quite peckish, so I decided to head to Naramachi for lunch. I chose Edogawa - Naramachi, a restaurant known for its unagi (eel). The restaurant was in a traditional Machiya building, adding to the authentic Japanese experience. I ordered the Unagi set meal, which allowed me to taste the eel prepared in three different ways. Each dish was exquisite, the eel perfectly grilled and seasoned. It was a truly satisfying meal that gave me a taste of local cuisine.

After lunch, I strolled through Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten - Nara Flagship Store, a charming general store offering a variety of local crafts and goods. As someone who appreciates craftsmanship, I was drawn to the beautifully made textiles, home decor items, and other unique products. I picked up a few souvenirs for Elke and Maximilian, wanting to share a piece of Nara with them. The store itself was a delightful space, blending traditional elements with a modern aesthetic.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to akordu for dinner, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant that blends Spanish and Japanese cuisine. The restaurant's name, meaning memories in Basque, hinted at the culinary journey I was about to embark on. The set menu was a work of art, each dish carefully crafted with local ingredients and presented with exquisite detail. The flavors were both familiar and surprising, a testament to the chef's creativity and skill. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable, making the dining experience all the more memorable. It was the perfect end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Reflecting on my first day in Nara, I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude. The city had exceeded my expectations, offering a blend of ancient history, natural beauty, and culinary delights. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include visits to Isuien Garden, Yoshikien Garden and the Nara National Museum, I am excited to see what other hidden gems Nara has in store. I plan to start my day with breakfast at Vegan Cafe Ramuna, followed by lunch at Awa Naramachi, and dinner at Wa Yamamura. Perhaps I'll even find time to visit LAMP BAR for a nightcap. I'm also hoping the weather will be favorable for some outdoor photography.

For now, I bid you goodnight from Nara, a city that has already captured my heart.
