Golden Memories of Nara

As my final day in Nara draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve undertaken. This solo trip was conceived as a deep dive into Japan's historical heart, a mission to explore the ancient temples, serene gardens, and vibrant culture that define this captivating city. Now, as I prepare to leave, I realize that Nara has given me more than just sights to see; it has gifted me with experiences that will resonate long after I return to my workshop in Heidelberg.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Mizuya Chaya. The charming little hut, nestled near the entrance of Kasuga Shrine, offered a cozy start to the day. I savored a bowl of their famous udon, the rich broth warming me from the inside out. It's incredible to think this place has been serving up delights since 1948. As I ate, I watched the occasional deer wander by, a gentle reminder of Nara's unique blend of nature and culture. It was a peaceful moment, a perfect way to prepare for the day's explorations. I made sure to keep a close eye on my meal, remembering the stories I'd heard about the deer's cheeky attempts to steal food right off your plate.

“The beauty of a journey lies not just in the destinations we reach, but in the moments of introspection and connection we discover along the way.”

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to the NARA KINGYO MUSEUM. Located on the 4th floor of the Mi Nara shopping mall, this museum promised a unique experience. And unique it was! From the moment I stepped inside, I was transported into a world of vibrant colors, shimmering lights, and graceful goldfish. The museum is a fusion of art and nature, with each room offering a different theme and atmosphere. Projection mapping, stained glass, and mirror balls created a mesmerizing backdrop for the elegant movements of the fish.

I was particularly taken by the crystal-shaped tank, a centerpiece that showcased a variety of rare goldfish. It felt like stepping into another world, a place where art and nature danced in harmony. I also appreciated the accessibility of the museum; it's designed to be welcoming to visitors of all ages and abilities, with consideration for wheelchairs and strollers. I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the exhibits, capturing photos and simply soaking in the beauty. The museum truly is a photographer's dream, with endless opportunities to capture stunning images.

Leaving the museum, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. It was time for a contemplative walk around Sagiike Pond. This serene spot in Nara Park offers a respite from the bustling city. The pond's centerpiece is the Ukimido gazebo, a hexagonal wooden pavilion that seems to float on the water. I strolled along the water's edge, enjoying the reflections of the surrounding trees and the gentle breeze. It was a perfect place for introspection, a chance to reflect on my journey and the experiences I've gathered along the way.

As I sat by the pond, I thought about Elke and Maximilian back home in Heidelberg. I missed them dearly, but I also knew that this solo journey was something I needed to do. It allowed me to reconnect with myself, to indulge in my passions for history, architecture, and photography without distraction. I imagined Elke curled up with a book in our garden, and Maximilian pursuing his artistic endeavors. I smiled, knowing that they were both thriving in their own ways.

Lunch was at China Dining Hiten, a restaurant that offered a delightful surprise. I had read about their vegan menu and was eager to try it. The restaurant's atmosphere was unique, with private booths separated by curtains. It felt like stepping into a different world, a cozy and intimate space where I could savor my meal in peace. I ordered a selection of vegan dishes, each one bursting with flavor and freshness. The sweet and sour soy meat was particularly delicious, a perfect blend of sweet and savory.

In the late afternoon, I allowed myself a bit of relaxation before dinner. I stopped by Savant, a bar known for its impressive selection of spirits and expertly crafted cocktails. The bar had a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere, with knowledgeable bartenders who were passionate about their craft. I ordered a classic Japanese whisky, savoring the smooth taste and the quiet ambiance. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration, a moment to simply enjoy the present moment. Apparently, it's a bit of a hidden gem, located in a converted 100-year-old townhouse without a sign.

For my final dinner in Nara, I chose Kinatei, a vegetarian restaurant near the JR Nara station. This charming spot is known for its friendly service and delicious food. The owner, Yoshiko, welcomed me warmly and made me feel right at home. I opted for the daily lunch set, a selection of small dishes that showcased the best of Japanese vegetarian cuisine. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and bursting with flavor. The meal was a perfect ending to my culinary journey through Nara, a testament to the city's rich and diverse food scene.

As I prepare to leave Nara, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had. This solo trip has been a journey of discovery, both of the city's rich history and of my own inner landscape. I've explored ancient temples, wandered through serene gardens, and savored the flavors of Japanese cuisine. I've met friendly locals and fellow travelers, each encounter adding a new layer to my understanding of this fascinating culture. I know I will carry these memories with me always, inspiring my work and enriching my life.

I'm particularly grateful for the opportunity to have slowed down and truly appreciated the details around me. As a furniture restorer, I often find myself immersed in the intricate details of antique pieces, but it was refreshing to apply that same level of attention to the world around me. From the delicate patterns in the NARA KINGYO MUSEUM to the serene reflections in Sagiike Pond, every moment in Nara felt like a lesson in observation and appreciation.

I must admit, I did have a moment of frustration when I realized I had forgotten my sunscreen and international power adapter back at home. However, even that minor inconvenience served as a reminder to be present and adaptable. After all, travel is not just about meticulously planned itineraries, but also about embracing the unexpected.

As I pack my bags, I look forward to returning to Heidelberg and sharing my stories with Elke and Maximilian. I know they will be eager to hear about my adventures, and I can't wait to show them the photos I've captured. And who knows, perhaps one day we can all return to Nara together, experiencing the magic of this city as a family.

Tomorrow, I embark on my journey home, carrying with me not just souvenirs and photographs, but a renewed sense of appreciation for the beauty and history that surrounds us. Nara, thank you for the memories. Heidelberg, I'm coming home.

I will cherish the memories I have made in this wonderful place. It's a shame that the trip is over, but I am looking forward to seeing Elke and Maximilian again. It will be good to be home.

What I've learned most from this trip is that sometimes, you have to step outside of your comfort zone and explore new places. You never know what you might discover about yourself and the world around you. And who knows, maybe my next adventure will be somewhere even more unexpected. Until then, I'll keep exploring, keep learning, and keep sharing my stories with all of you.

Auf Wiedersehen, Nara!
