A Day of Discovery in Nara's Historical Heart

Today, I set out to further explore Nara's rich cultural heritage, venturing beyond the well-trodden paths to discover some of the city's hidden gems. My journey took me to serene temples, informative museums, and bustling local spots, each offering a unique perspective on Nara's history and way of life. It was a day of quiet contemplation and deeper understanding, reinforcing my appreciation for this ancient capital.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Koushi, a charming restaurant known for its tofu dishes. As a restorer of antique furniture, I appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication that goes into creating something truly special, and the same can be said for the art of tofu making. The restaurant had a serene ambiance, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern touches. I savored the delicate flavors of the tofu, reflecting on the importance of preserving traditional techniques, much like the restoration work I do back in Heidelberg. It was a delightful start to the day, setting a peaceful tone for the adventures ahead.

After breakfast, I made my way to Byakugoji Temple, a serene temple located on a hill offering panoramic views of Nara. The temple is a bit of a walk from the main areas, but the journey was well worth it. As I ascended the stone steps leading to the temple gate, I was surrounded by lush greenery, creating a sense of tranquility and escape from the city. The temple itself was beautiful, with traditional architecture and a peaceful atmosphere. I took some time to wander the grounds, admiring the intricate carvings and statues, and enjoying the stunning views of Nara stretching out before me. The temple's main hall was particularly impressive, showcasing traditional Japanese architectural styles.

The name Byakugoji refers to the small dot between the Buddha's eyebrows. According to legend, this temple was once the mountain villa of Prince Shiki. I found a monument engraved with a poem by Prince Shiki, which described the scenery of Mount Takamado. Standing there, with Mount Takamado behind the monument, I could see the tomb of Prince Shiki in the distance. It was a moment of connection to the past, a reminder of the layers of history that permeate every corner of Nara.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners, away from the bustling crowds.

Next on my itinerary was the Naramachi Shiryo-kan Museum, a private institution dedicated to the history and culture of the Naramachi district. Housed in a traditional townhouse, the museum offered a glimpse into the lives of Edo-period merchants through artifacts such as traditional crafts, household items, documents, photographs, and maps. The recreated merchant houses and shops provided an interactive historical experience, allowing me to step back in time and imagine what life was like in this bustling merchant district.

The museum was founded in 1985 and is now run by the son of its founder. It showcases the region's cultural heritage through exhibits that highlight the traditions, art and daily life of Nara's past inhabitants. I was particularly fascinated by the displays related to Koshin beliefs, an unusual faith that incorporates Daoist elements. The museum also had a collection of Migawari-zaru, small red monkey charms used for exorcism.

For lunch, I decided to try Kameya, a long-standing Japanese restaurant known for its okonomiyaki. Located near Kofuku-ji temple on Sanjo-dori, the restaurant had an informal atmosphere and friendly staff. Despite its unassuming exterior, it was a popular spot, and I soon found myself enjoying a delicious okonomiyaki, a savory pancake dish that was both filling and flavorful. It was a satisfying meal that provided a taste of local cuisine and a chance to recharge before continuing my explorations.

In the afternoon, I visited the Todai-ji Museum, located near the Nandaimon gate of Todai-ji Temple. The museum exhibits national treasures and important cultural properties, including Buddhist statues, paintings, and masks. It was opened in 2011 and gives visitors the chance to learn about the history and culture of the temple.

The museum had a calm atmosphere, perfect for quiet contemplation. The exhibits were well-curated, and I particularly enjoyed seeing the full-scale model of a Buddha hand. It gave me a sense of the immense scale of the Buddha statue in Todai-ji Temple. The museum also had a video constantly showing the history of the temple, including Emperor Shomu's love for the Great Buddha and its restoration from the fires of war.

After immersing myself in the exhibits, I decided to do some shopping at Nara Family, a large-scale shopping mall located a short walk from Yamato Saidaiji Station. As someone who appreciates both traditional craftsmanship and modern convenience, I found Nara Family to be an interesting blend of both. The mall had a wide variety of shops, including a department store, supermarket, and specialty shops. I enjoyed browsing the different stores, picking up a few souvenirs, and observing the local shoppers going about their daily routines.

Before dinner, I took a moment to relax and reflect on the day's experiences. I found a quiet spot in Nara Park, watching the deer roam freely and observing the interactions between locals and tourists. As I sat there, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful city and immerse myself in its rich culture. It was a reminder of the importance of travel and the transformative power of experiencing new places and perspectives.

For dinner, I chose Rokumeien, a charming restaurant near Nara Park offering vegetarian and vegan options. I was in the mood for something light and healthy, and Rokumeien seemed like the perfect choice. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I ordered the Mix Somen, a refreshing noodle dish with a shouyu taste. It was a delightful way to end the day, savoring the flavors of Nara while reflecting on the experiences I had gathered throughout the day.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, my final day in Nara, I plan to visit the NARA KINGYO MUSEUM and Sagiike Pond, hoping to uncover more of Nara's unique charm before I depart. And perhaps, I will visit the Savant bar for a farewell drink, to celebrate my journey.

As I prepare to leave Nara, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I have had and the memories I have made. This solo journey has been a deeply personal and enriching experience, allowing me to connect with the history, culture, and people of Japan in a way that I will never forget. Nara has truly captured my heart, and I know that I will carry its lessons and inspiration with me long after I return home. Now, it’s time to rest and prepare for my final day in this captivating city.
