Day 8: Nara's Soulful Echoes: Temples, Gardens, and Jazz
Discover Nara's serene beauty, ancient temples, and vibrant nightlife with a day of cultural immersion and jazzy rhythms.
A Day of Reflection and Rhythm
Today in Nara was a journey through time and tranquility, a blend of the ancient and the modern that resonated deeply with my soul. As I continue my solo exploration of this historical heart of Japan, I found myself drawn into the serene beauty of its gardens and the vibrant pulse of its nightlife.
My day began, as most days here do, with a sense of anticipation. I ventured out for breakfast at Satei Yusui, a charming spot I had heard whispers about. The reviews spoke of a calm atmosphere and a menu that promised a delightful start to the day. Tucked away perfectly for a pre-sightseeing meal, Satei Yusui is known for its delicious vegetables and rice. I decided to try their Warabi Mochi, a traditional Japanese sweet made from bracken starch. It was a light, refreshing way to begin my explorations, and I savored every bite while enjoying the peaceful ambiance of the restaurant.

With a satisfied stomach and a curious mind, I set off to explore the Todaiji Nandaimon (Great South Gate). As I approached the gate, I was immediately struck by its grandeur. The sheer scale of the wooden structure was awe-inspiring, a testament to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. The Nandaimon, rebuilt in the 12th century, stands as the main entrance to Todaiji Temple, and its imposing presence is guarded by two Nio figures. These 8.5-meter-tall wooden statues, carved by the renowned sculptors Unkei and Kaikei, are considered some of the finest examples of their kind in Japan. I spent a good while simply gazing at these figures, marveling at the intricate details and the powerful expressions etched into their faces. The gate itself burned down in 1180, but was rebuilt in 1199. Buddhist monk Chogen led the reconstruction, using a Chinese style of timber construction.

The beauty of Nara lies not just in its historical landmarks, but in the serene spaces where one can reflect on the passage of time and the enduring spirit of Japanese culture.
Leaving the imposing presence of Todaiji, I sought a different kind of serenity at The Garden of the Former Daijyo-in Temple. This garden, once part of a prominent temple complex, offered a tranquil escape from the summer heat. Renovated in the mid-15th century by Zenami, a master gardener from Kyoto, the garden is a testament to the principles of Japanese aesthetics. As I strolled through the meticulously manicured landscapes, I was captivated by the diverse flora, the serene ponds, and the harmonious layout. The garden was originally renovated by head priest Jinson in the fifteenth century, with Zenami involved in the construction. The garden is a pond garden, centered on the Higashiōike, the large eastern pond which still survives.

The sunlight filtering through the trees created dappled patterns on the mossy ground, and the gentle sound of flowing water provided a soothing soundtrack to my exploration. I found a quiet spot to sit and contemplate, my thoughts drifting back to my workshop in Heidelberg. The meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail in the garden mirrored the very essence of my work restoring antique furniture. I appreciated the garden's ponds and diverse flora.
For lunch, I ventured to Izasa-Nakatani-hompo Yumekaze-hiroba, a restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine, particularly kakinoha sushi. This type of sushi, wrapped in persimmon leaves, is a regional specialty, and I was eager to try it. The restaurant is conveniently located near Todai-ji temple, making it an ideal stop for tourists exploring the area. I opted for the Izasa Sushi and Tempura Set, a delightful assortment of flavors and textures. The sushi was fresh and flavorful, and the tempura was light and crispy. As I savored my meal, I enjoyed the view of the Great Buddha Hall from my window seat, a truly memorable dining experience. The restaurant has a nice interior design and view.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to Sarusawa-ike Pond, a picturesque lake in the heart of Nara Park. The pond, with its tranquil waters and surrounding greenery, is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. As I walked along the pond's edge, I admired the reflection of Kofukuji Temple's five-story pagoda in the water. The scene was like a postcard, a perfect encapsulation of Nara's serene beauty. Sarusawa-ike is an artificial pond, dug in 749 as part of the grounds of Kofukuji Temple. Legend says that a court maid drowned herself in the lake after falling out of favor with the emperor. Benches surround the pond, where turtles and herons can be seen on sunny days.

As evening approached, I decided to experience a different side of Nara's cultural scene. I headed to blue note Naramachi, a cozy jazz club that had been recommended to me by several locals. Originally located in Kyoto, the Blue Note relocated to Nara in 2016 and has become a beloved spot for jazz enthusiasts. As I stepped inside, I was enveloped in the warm ambiance and the soothing rhythms of live music. The club's design was thoughtfully curated, with comfortable seating and an elegant bar. I ordered a drink and settled in to enjoy the performance, letting the music wash over me. The Blue Note first opened in 1962.

The musicians were incredibly talented, and their passion for jazz was palpable. I found myself tapping my foot along to the beat, lost in the moment. It was a far cry from the classical music I often listen to in Heidelberg, but it was a welcome change of pace. The club emphasizes a sense of community, making it easy for visitors to mingle and share their love for music.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Nara has to offer. It's not just a city of ancient temples and historical landmarks; it's a place where tradition and modernity coexist in harmony. From the grandeur of Todaiji Nandaimon to the tranquility of The Garden of the Former Daijyo-in Temple, from the flavors of kakinoha sushi to the rhythms of jazz at blue note Naramachi, Nara has captivated my senses and stirred my soul. Blue Note Naramachi offers an intimate setting for jazz enthusiasts.
Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into Nara's cultural treasures with visits to Byakugoji Temple, the Naramachi Shiryo-kan Museum, and the Todai-ji Museum. I am also planning on doing some shopping at Nara Family. I am eager to uncover more of the city's hidden gems and immerse myself further in its rich heritage. As the sun sets over Nara, I raise a glass to the experiences of today and the adventures that await tomorrow. The city has a perfect blend of tradition and technology.
