Exploring Nan's Royal and Artistic Side

Today was a day filled with cultural immersion, royal history, and artistic appreciation. Nan continues to surprise me with its hidden gems, and I'm excited to share my experiences as we delve deeper into this charming Thai province. From serene palaces to vibrant art galleries, every corner tells a unique story.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Jae Lek Nan Chicken Rice. I’d heard whispers amongst the locals about this legendary spot, a humble eatery that’s been satisfying hungry customers for over 30 years. It was just a short distance from Sukkasem Hotel, making it the perfect way to kickstart our day.

The star of the show? Khao Mun Gai, or Hainanese Chicken Rice – perfectly cooked, aromatic rice paired with tender, juicy chicken. I made sure to top it off with their signature dipping sauce, adding an extra burst of flavor. It's easy to see why this place is a local favorite; it’s a must-try for anyone visiting Nan. I even managed to practice a bit of my Fijian, attempting to say vinaka vakalevu (thank you very much) to the friendly staff, which brought smiles all around. It reminded me of the simple, delicious meals back home in Navua.

Fuelled up, we headed to our first official stop: the Rim Nam Nan Palace. Nestled in Mueang Nan District, it offered a tranquil and picturesque retreat.

The gardens were serene, providing a clean, peaceful environment to unwind and capture some stunning natural landscapes. It was the perfect place to reflect on the morning and mentally prepare for the day ahead. While not quite the scale of the Grand Palace in Bangkok, it had a quiet charm that resonated deeply. I could almost imagine King David strolling through these gardens, contemplating his next move.
Art has the power to transform, to illuminate the hidden corners of our souls, and to connect us with something larger than ourselves.

Next on the itinerary was the Nan Riverside Art Gallery. Founded by Nan artist Mr. Winai Prabripu, this gallery is dedicated to showcasing the beauty of art to the people and youth of Nan.

It took over seven years to design and build, officially opening in 2004. The gallery spans 13 rai, featuring an art gallery, studio, and accommodation for art trainees. The upper floor displayed paintings by HRH Princess Sirindhorn, who has visited the gallery three times. The lower floor featured works by professional artists and rotating exhibitions. There was even a section called Huan Nan Bua Phan, honoring artists who contributed to Wat Phumin and Wat Nong Bua, displaying important murals and works related to the families of Nan mural painters. I was particularly moved by the space dedicated to young artists, showcasing smaller, unique pieces. The gallery also offered a souvenir shop and café, making it a well-rounded cultural experience. As someone who appreciates both Fijian art and global creativity, I found this gallery to be a true highlight. Mere would have loved this place; she always appreciates the intricate details and stories behind art pieces.
For lunch, we ventured to Nan Native. This restaurant, owned by Chef First Tanapat, the champion of MasterChef Thailand Season 2, was a culinary delight.

The innovative menu blended traditional Thai flavors with modern techniques, creating dishes that were both familiar and exciting. I tried a local specialty, a flavorful curry that reminded me of the dishes my mother used to make back in Fiji, albeit with a Thai twist. The ambiance was warm and inviting, making it a perfect spot to relax and savor the flavors of Nan. I made sure to express my gratitude to Chef First for his culinary artistry, feeling a sense of connection through our shared love for food.
After lunch, I couldn't resist a bit of shopping at Goods Wear Studio. This studio offered a range of locally made clothing and accessories, perfect for finding unique souvenirs.

I picked up a beautiful hand-woven scarf for Mere and a small wooden toy for Sailosi. Supporting local artisans is something I believe in, and it felt good to contribute to the community while finding meaningful gifts. The studio had a cozy, creative vibe, and I enjoyed chatting with the artists about their craft.
Our final culinary experience of the day was at Restart Bar&Bistro. This cozy spot offered a mix of Thai and Western dishes, along with a selection of local beers and cocktails.

I opted for a classic Pad Thai, while some of my friends tried the local craft beers. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, providing a perfect setting to unwind after a day of exploration. As the sun set, we shared stories and laughter, reflecting on the day’s adventures. It reminded me of the casual get-togethers we have in Vancouver, sharing food and drinks with friends. The time in Nan has been a welcome change and I am glad that I didn't forget my travel insurance or passport for the trip.
Today was a reminder of the beauty and depth that Nan has to offer. The blend of royal history, artistic expression, and culinary delights created a rich and fulfilling experience. As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this hidden gem of Thailand. This evening, I'll make sure to give Mere and Sailosi a call. Hearing their voices always brings a sense of comfort, especially when I'm far from home. I can't wait to share my stories with them and hear about their day too.
Tomorrow, we are planning to explore Ban Khom Kham and Ban Chang Phuak Public Park, followed by dinner at Nan Steakhouse. I am looking forward to more adventures and discoveries in this enchanting province.
It feels me with excitement to experience more of what Nan has to offer and immerse myself in its rich culture. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of connecting with new places and people, and I'm grateful for every moment.
In the meantime, I'm off to rest and recharge for another day of exploration. Until tomorrow, safe travels and may your own adventures be as enriching as mine!
