Reaching for the Sky in Nan

Today was all about embracing the heights of Nan, both literally and figuratively. After several days exploring temples and markets, my friends and I were ready to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Northern Thailand. We set out early, eager to conquer Doi Samer Dao and Doi Phu Kha National Park.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Erabica Coffee Nan. I opted for a strong Thai coffee and some pastries, fueling up for the adventures ahead. We piled into our rented van, with the promise of breathtaking views spurring us on. The drive to Doi Samer Dao was scenic, winding through lush green landscapes that reminded me of the hills back home in Fiji. I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to experience such different, yet equally stunning, natural beauty.

Doi Samer Dao lived up to its reputation as a premier camping destination. The views from the top were simply incredible, a wide courtyard along the ridge offered 360 views. We spent a good hour just wandering around, snapping photos, and soaking it all in. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city. Although camping is available from October to February, we were surrounded by many tents. Luckily, we had a car to make sure we kept track of our belongings. I even tried my hand at some amateur astronomy, pointing out constellations to my friends. It's a hobby I usually enjoy in the clear skies of Vancouver, but the stars seemed even brighter up here in the mountains of Nan.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of the world where nature whispers its secrets.

After soaking in the panoramic vistas of Doi Samer Dao, we journeyed on to Doi Phu Kha National Park. This park is massive, covering parts of eight districts. I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. The park is known for its viewpoints, cool weather, campsites, trails and caves.

We decided to tackle one of the shorter trails, eager to stretch our legs and immerse ourselves in the forest. The trail was well-maintained, but still offered a sense of adventure, winding through dense vegetation and across small streams. I spotted a few interesting birds along the way, their calls echoing through the trees. I am no expert, but I did read that Doi Phu Kha is home to around 240 species of birds. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and foliage, a sensory experience that grounded me in the present moment. It reminded me of the importance of sustainable living, a cause I champion back in Vancouver. Seeing this pristine environment reinforced my commitment to preserving such natural treasures.

For lunch, we stopped at Huean Man Kaeo, a local restaurant that came highly recommended. The food was delicious, a mix of traditional Thai dishes with a unique Nan twist. I tried a local curry that was both spicy and flavorful, a perfect representation of the region's culinary heritage. Over lunch, we chatted about our families back home. I showed them pictures of Mere and Sailosi, and they shared stories of their own loved ones. It's moments like these that make traveling with friends so special, a shared experience that strengthens bonds and creates lasting memories.

As the afternoon wore on, we explored more of Doi Phu Kha, stopping at several viewpoints to admire the sweeping landscapes. The park’s highest peak, also called Doi Phu Kha, stands at 1,980 meters. The views were simply breathtaking, a tapestry of rolling hills and verdant valleys stretching as far as the eye could see. I learned that the park is named after the chomphu phu kha tree, known for its pink flowers. Though they typically bloom in February and March, I made a mental note to try and visit again during that time to witness the spectacle. October is at the end of the rainy season, so it was quite humid.

Before heading back to Nan, we made a quick stop at Lanna Style Shop. I picked up a few souvenirs for Mere and Sailosi, small tokens to remind them of my adventures in Thailand. I chose a hand-woven scarf for Mere, its intricate patterns reflecting the artistry of the local artisans. And for Sailosi, a small wooden carving of an elephant, a symbol of strength and good luck.

For dinner, we decided to try Yoshiya, a restaurant known for its authentic Thai cuisine. I opted for a classic Pad Thai, a dish I never tire of. As we ate, we reflected on the day's adventures, sharing stories and laughter. It was a perfect end to a day spent exploring the heights of Nan.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Sao Din Na Noi and Wat Phaya Phu Phra Aram Luang. I'm particularly excited about Sao Din Na Noi, with its unique rock formations. But for now, I'm content to relax and reflect on the incredible experiences of today. Nan continues to surprise and delight, offering a unique blend of culture, nature, and warm hospitality. I feel incredibly fortunate to be sharing this journey with my friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

As I write this, I'm reminded of a Fijian proverb my grandfather used to say:
Lako yani ka la'ki raica na vuravura,

(Go forth and see the world).

And that's exactly what I intend to do.
