Finding Serenity in Nan's Hidden Gems

After a few days settling into the rhythm of Nan, Thailand, I was eager to explore beyond the city center. Today was all about embracing nature and diving deeper into the local culture. With my friends in tow, I knew it would be a day filled with unforgettable moments.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hot Bread Restaurant. I'd heard whispers about their amazing sandwiches and freshly baked bread, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The ladies running the place were incredibly warm, and their delicious creations set the perfect tone for our adventure. I opted for an egg and vegetable wrap with curry paste, while my friends went for the classic bacon and egg sandwich. Fuelled and ready, we set off to Tham Pha Tub Forest Park.

The drive to Tham Pha Tub Forest Park was scenic, with lush greenery stretching as far as the eye could see. As we approached the park, the air felt fresher, and the promise of natural beauty was palpable. The park itself is a treasure trove of unique flora, with rare species like Dracaena loureiri and Dendrobium lindleyi adding to its charm. Unfortunately, I forgot my sunglasses at the hotel, so I had to squint a lot, but the views were still worth it! We followed a natural walkway that led us deeper into the park, the path occasionally winding uphill.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Our destination was Bo Nam Thip Cave, a large cavern known for its stalactites and stalagmites. The cave's chimney-like opening allowed sunlight and a gentle breeze to filter through, creating an ethereal atmosphere. There was even a curved pool of water considered sacred by the locals. Sadly, we couldn't access all areas of the cave as it's the tail end of the rainy season, but what we saw was truly mesmerizing.

After spending a couple of hours exploring Tham Pha Tub, we were ready for lunch. Gin Restaurant was our chosen spot, and it didn't disappoint. This restaurant is known for blending Thai and international flavors in a cozy, air-conditioned setting. We indulged in a variety of dishes, from traditional Thai cuisine to Italian-inspired fare. I couldn't resist trying their version of แกงปูใบชะพลู (crab curry with betel leaves), which was rich and flavorful. My friends tried the pizza and spaghetti, which they said were equally delicious. It was a satisfying meal that rejuvenated us for the afternoon's cultural exploration.

With our bellies full, we headed to Wat Suan Tan, an ancient temple with over 600 years of history. Founded in 1412 by Queen Pathummawadi, the temple has been a significant part of Nan's heritage. As we approached, the temple's serene atmosphere enveloped us, transporting us to a different era. The temple is known as The Monastery of the Sugar Palm Grove. It was fascinating to learn about its history and admire the unique Lanna architecture.

One of the highlights of Wat Suan Tan is the large bronze Buddha image, Phra Chao Thong Thip, which means the Thip of Gold. This Sukhothai-style Buddha is a sight to behold, standing at an impressive 4.10 meters tall. The temple also houses a 40-meter-high stupa that combines Hindu and Khmer motifs, topped with a Sukhothai-style lotus bud. The intricate wood carvings and layered roofs of the ubosot (ordination hall) and viharn (sanctuary) were truly captivating.

I took a moment to sit under one of the large trees in the temple grounds, soaking in the tranquility. The temple is not only a spiritual center but also a place where important local ceremonies like the Heet Hoi festival take place. It's a place where art, culture, and history intertwine, offering visitors a glimpse into the soul of Nan.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to experience Nan's nightlife at Bitter Bar. This trendy cocktail bar is known for its expertly crafted drinks that blend local flavors with classic mixology. The atmosphere was vibrant, and the bartenders were passionate about their craft. I decided to try one of their local-inspired cocktails, and it was a delightful explosion of flavors. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Before heading back to Sukkasem Hotel, we had dinner at ChalermThai, a local restaurant. I was keen to try authentic Thai cuisine, and this place was highly recommended. The flavors were bold and spicy, just the way I like it. I had the opportunity to practice my basic Thai phrases with the staff, which was both fun and rewarding. The restaurant had a friendly, local vibe, and I felt a genuine connection to the community.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Doi Samer Dao and Doi Phu Kha National Park. I'm excited to see more of Nan's natural beauty and experience its stunning mountain landscapes. I've heard that Doi Samer Dao offers breathtaking views of the stars at night, so I'm hoping for clear skies.

As I write this, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences of today. Nan has a way of captivating your heart with its serene beauty and rich culture. It's a reminder that sometimes the most rewarding journeys are those that lead you off the beaten path. I am so glad I remembered to pack my travel insurance this time around, as it gives me peace of mind when exploring.

I must remember to buy a portable charger at Lanna Style Shop tomorrow, as I am constantly running out of battery on my phone. Also, I am keen to try Erabica Coffee Nan for breakfast tomorrow.

Until tomorrow, Nan, sawasdee khrap!
