First Impressions: Nan, a City of Murals and Markets

After months of planning and dreaming, I’ve finally arrived in Nan with my friends! The air is warm, a balmy 32°C, with a humidity that reminds me of home in Fiji. It's October, which I'm told is a good time to visit, though we might get some rain. Landing in Nan felt like stepping into a different world, far removed from the bustling streets of Vancouver. The flight from Bangkok was smooth, and the Sukkasem Hotel is proving to be a great choice – clean, comfortable, and right in the heart of the city. It's the perfect base for our adventures.

Our first day was packed, a whirlwind tour of Nan's cultural gems. We started with a hearty breakfast at Nan Artisan Pizza. Who knew I could find such good pizza in Thailand? It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring.

First stop: the Nan National Museum.

As a Community Engagement Coordinator, I am always drawn to locations that preserve and celebrate local history and culture, and I was not disappointed. The museum is housed in what was once the residence of Nan’s ruler, Chao Suriyapongparitdet, and it's like stepping back in time. The architecture itself is stunning, a traditional Thai house filled with artifacts that tell the story of Nan's past.

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. – Ibn Battuta

From ancient Buddha sculptures to traditional textiles and musical instruments, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's heritage. I was particularly struck by the exhibits on Nan's diverse ethnic groups, including the Thai Lue, Hmong, and Mien people. It’s amazing how much history is packed into this relatively small museum. I made sure to grab some photos by the Frangipani Tunnel near the museum – a truly magical spot.

Next, we ventured to Wat Phumin, perhaps the most famous temple in Nan.

This temple is unique because it combines a prayer hall, sanctuary, and pagoda all in one building. The architecture is stunning, with four entrances and Buddha images facing each cardinal direction. But what truly sets Wat Phumin apart are the murals that adorn its walls. These paintings depict scenes from daily life in 19th-century Nan, offering a window into the past.

The most famous of these murals is The Great Whisperers, which shows a man and woman whispering to each other. It’s become an iconic symbol of Nan, and I can see why. The detail and artistry are incredible, and the stories they tell are captivating. We spent a good hour wandering around the temple, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the artwork.

For lunch, we stopped at Nan Cottage Cuisine & Café, a charming spot known for its authentic Thai dishes. I tried the local curry, and it was bursting with flavor. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a perfect place to relax and refuel before our next adventure.

As evening approached, we headed to the Nan City Weekend Night Market. This bustling market is a feast for the senses, with vendors selling everything from street food to handicrafts. I loved wandering through the stalls, sampling local delicacies and soaking in the lively atmosphere. The market is set against the backdrop of beautifully lit temples, creating a magical ambiance.

I picked up a few souvenirs for Mere and Sailosi – some hand-woven textiles and a small wooden carving. I wish they could have been here with me, experiencing the sights and sounds of Nan. But I know they’ll appreciate the gifts and the stories I’ll bring back.

We had dinner at Huen Horm Restaurant, a popular spot for authentic Northern Thai cuisine. The restaurant is in a traditional wooden house, and the open-air seating added to the charm. We tried a variety of dishes, including fried chicken wings, stir-fried mushrooms, and curry with sticky rice. Everything was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end a busy day.

The Nan City Weekend Night Market was an experience in itself. The energy, the smells, the sheer variety of goods on offer – it was intoxicating. I found myself drawn to the handmade crafts, intricate carvings, and vibrant textiles. It was hard to resist buying something from every stall!

I even managed to haggle (a little!) for a beautiful hand-woven scarf, a perfect gift for Mere. The vendors were friendly and welcoming, and I felt a genuine connection to the local culture. The sounds of live music filled the air, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The food, of course, was a highlight. I sampled some local street food – grilled meats, spicy salads, and sweet treats. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and incredibly affordable. I even tried a dish I couldn't quite identify, but it was delicious nonetheless!

As I wandered through the market, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's experiences. From the historical treasures of the Nan National Museum to the spiritual beauty of Wat Phumin and the vibrant energy of the night market, Nan had already captured my heart. It was a place where the past and present intertwined, where tradition and modernity coexisted in harmony.

Before heading back to the hotel, we stopped for a nightcap at a local bar, soaking in the last moments of the day. As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this hidden gem of Thailand. Nan is a place that stays with you, a place that nourishes the soul.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Wat Phra That Chae Haeng and Wat Ming Mueang [if last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I’m also hoping to check out SAY BAR for a relaxing evening [if last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I can’t wait to see what other treasures Nan has in store.

Despite forgetting my sunglasses and portable phone charger, today was a success! I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. I'm so glad I decided to come to Nan. It's a truly special place, and I can't wait to see what else it has to offer. I think I'll sleep well tonight!
